‪Blackwall Reach is the lower section of the Swan River, around 10 minutes upriver from Fremantle. The limestone cliffs are tall, and the river is quite narrow. Most people see Blackwall Reach from the Rottnest ferry. The Point Walter Reserve has two sections: the Point Walter Bushland and the Blackwall Reach Reserve. The area is rich in birdlife; it's a good place to have a picnic.‬

‪These limestone cliffs line the Swan River. The walls are pitted, and quite rugged; they are caused by erosion. They are very rocky, and they are up to 8 metres tall. You can paddle from the Point Walter Reserve and get a close-up view and explore the caves. Blackwall Reach is a notable section of the Swan River. This part of the Swan River is relatively narrow, especially when compared to Melville Water, which is relatively broad.‬

‪The Swan River is a sunken estuary, The major expanses of the river, especially Perth Water and Melville Water, are quite shallow -- in some places it's almost possible to stand. The river banks are mostly gradual and sandy. Blackwall Reach, however, has steep, rocky walls, which are up to 8 metres tall. These limestone walls are worth looking out for if you are going down river on the Rottnest ferry.‬

‪We visited the reserve starting from the Walter Point car park at the end of Honour Ave which borders the 1 km long reserve on the east side while on the other side there is the Swan River. The entrance is on Honour Ave at about 50 m from the car park where an information board provides data on the very particular environment of this reserve. Here begins an easy walk on a dual use path which is bordered by a low fence. The presence of a fair number of cyclists made our walk less pleasant with the ringing of the bell that we periodically hear behind us. Fortunately, in some sections the track splits with uncemented sections reserved for pedestrians only. In some places the low fence that runs along the river side of the path has openings. There are steps that allow you to reach the Jenalup beach, a really tiny sand area on the river, and paths of just a few metres to reach one of the few points on the limestone cliffs from which you can have a complete view of the Swan River. This because the path is about ten meters high above the river but the dense vegetation only in a very few points allows you to see the water. In fact the Blackwall Reach Reserve is on limestone cliffs, formed by the eroding processes of the river, that rise eight meters out of the Swan River. There are some points where the limestone wall is perpendicular to the water and in many of these points there are “no diving” signs (cliff jumping seems to have dangerously been popular in the past). In the river, a few meters from the cliffs, all along the reserve, there are many buoys where several private boats are moored. The walking in this reserve ends where the trail reaches Blackwall Reach Parade. Here there is a small car park that can be used if you prefer to start visiting the reserve from here. Naturally we went back thus covering a total of 2 km there and back. This reserve seems to be not suitable for birdwatching both for the way the path runs along it and for the traffic of cyclists and pedestrians: we have only seen a few parrots. Blackwall Reach Reserve is for sure located in a very interesting and scenic part of the Swan River, but it disappointed us because of the fences and the many prohibition signs that do not allow access to the cliffs as well as for the traffic of cyclists for whom it makes little sense to travel this kilometer on a narrow and crowded path.‬
