We were very well taken care of. The hosts and staff had to make last minute changes because 3 of our 6 travel group got sick. They bent over backwards to make sure we all had a good time. We were treated like family.

Last month myself, my husband & my brother went to Ortona Italy to visit the grave of my husband’s uncle and 3 other soldiers we knew that are buried in the Moro River Canadian Cemetery. Never having been to Ortona before we contacted Mike at Absolutely Abruzzo Tours that we would like a one day tour of Ortona.
Angelo picked us up the day of the tour, gave us history on Ortona and then picked up a Professor who had researched the war and the two of them gave us a very emotional journey following the battle paths of the Canadian soldiers in WWII.
Visiting the cemetery was the beginning of a 9 hour tour where we paid our respects to the soldiers graves of those we knew, we were given the history of the cemetery and in the registry book we signed and we thanked them for taking care of our Canadian soldiers. All 3 of us were emotional by the time we left the cemetery. The cemetery is peaceful with it overlooking the Adriatic Sea and mountains on the other side. It is well maintained with flowers on every grave.
We then drove to all the battle area memorials & heard the history of each site, saw houses still with the bullet holes in the walls and ended with walking down main street where the Germans and the Canadians were each situated on this route and in the end to where the booby trapped house was that took their lives when they entered it.
During our tour we had stopped for an incredible lunch of Italy’s finest pasta and wine. We would have liked to go to the War Museum but unfortunately it was closed for renovations.
Thank you Angelo and Andrea for an outstanding tour that will never be forgotten. We will definitely recommend Abruzzo tours. No history class in school can give you the lesson you learned by actually walking our soldiers path in Ortona that they walked during the war, the tour guide puts you into the history and what they lived through. You couldn’t help but cry.

We went on a walking tour of central Pescara in Abruzzo Italy. We visited several local shops, a market, restaurants, wine shop and a gelateria. It was a small group tour, just five us so we were able to speak with the owners of the shops, and of course sample the products. Highly recommended.

We did a Heritage Tour with Michael to Alfedena,Abruzzo. Michael picked us up in Rome and we stayed overnight in a Bed and Breakfast. It was an adventure. We met many relatives and also had a guide, Maria Pia who was from Alfedena. We got a tour of the town and its history. We also visited the Cemetary to learn more about our relatives. Dina in the Town Hall where we received our ancestor's documents was wonderful and very helpful. She also is probably a relative!!

I had written to Mike with a few details about my ancestors in Ortona in the Abruzzo region last spring. I also mentioned that we were WWII history buffs and did not realize the extent to which the Battle of Ortona played at that time. He managed to put together a fabulous one day tour which was one half history and one half personal history of my ancestors. That day we were greeted by two tour guides named Andrea De Marco and Angelo Brigante respectively. Two more learned and enthusiastic scholars you will never meet! They were so well prepared. They took us to the battlefields. cemeteries, museum and even a town with the bullet holes still in the walls. We learned so much about that dark period and how Ortona was so important to the whole war effort.Needless to say, we were impressed with the depth of knowledge from these two learned gentlemen.
The second part of the tour was an emotional journey through the streets were our great grandparents lived, worked and thrived, culminating in a visit to the Archives where the original records of these relatives reside. Actual proof of who they were, what they owned and what they did prior to emigrating to America! So if you are interested in the Abruzzo area, don't hesitate to contact Mike and he will draw up a customized plan for your individual needs. We will definitely use Abruzzo tours again. So much more to explore...

Mike customized a trip of a lifetime for our family of 7 ranging from 84 to 19. He made our bus arrangements from Rome to Abruzzo and was punctual to pick us up in Pescara. We stayed in a lovely agriturismo and fell in love with our cook, Lucia, who was filled with warmth and hospitality. She lavished us with foods of the region and her meals were incredible! Mike created an itinerary which incorporated everything we wanted to see and do in the Abruzzo region. While keeping a pace that was comfortable for all of us, we began our journey with a quiet evening in Lanciano where we had the opportunity to visit the Eucharistic Miracle and attend Mass. The next day we visited Casoli, then the Provence of Chieti where we climbed up to the medieval castle in Roccascalegna and San Vito. Our final day was a visit to the region of Marche to visit the Black Madonna in the Holy House of Loreto. Knowing our love of the faith, Mike even surprised us with a side trip to Ortona where we visited the Basilica of St. Thomas the Apostle where we could view the reliquary with his remains. Mike was punctual to get us back to the airport for our flight to the next leg of our trip. He is dependable, a lot of fun and very knowledgeable. We truly enjoyed every moment of our stay in Abruzzo. Thanks Mike for providing us with memories of a lifetime!

Mike did an outstanding job of planning, recommending and delivering on an excellent tour of Abbruzzo region with a focus on Catholic religious sites for our family. Our trip took us Loreto and Lanciano as well as an awesome castle in the region. Mike has wide and deep knowledge of the region and what he doesn't know, he studies to be fluent in understanding before your arrival. During our trip I began discussing World War II and Mike began to detail out how Canadian and New Zealand troops were engaged in the region.. His selection in outstanding hidden restaurants is on point. Mike took care of all arrangements; all we had to do is literally show up and enjoy. If you have any reason to travel to this beautiful part of Italy, I would definitely recommend Absolutely Abruzzo tours with Mike. Thank you Mike!!!!!!!!!!

I gave Mike a bit of a challenge as I only discovered his tour once I was well into confirming our final Italian itinerary. My grandfather had fought for the British Army and the details had always been a bit vague, except I knew he was badly injured in a town call Orsogna. With literally only 24 hours available to discover this part of Italy on this particular trip, Mike did an amazing job. Not only giving me a real connection to where my grandfather had spent his last days in combat, but also brilliantly accommodated our teenagers, ensuring we had alot of variety witnessing the grape crushing process and also experiencing probably the best food we had on our entire trip. We will definitely be visiting Mike and Abruzzo again!

My wife wanted to find out about her Grandfathers involvement in the WW2 campaign around Ortona & Orsogna. She did a fair amount of research and found Mike online. He did some further research and we joined him in Italy for 2 really informative days following the path of her Grandfather and his regiment. We saw a lot and visited some great local attractions around the area. Thanks Mike.

I'd been aspiring to travel to my family's home village in east-central Italy since I was a boy and finally had time to make it happen this spring. I came upon Absolutely Abruzzo Tours via web search and contacted Mike Howard to inquire. From the start Mike was very responsive and willing to entertain what I wished to do while in Abruzzo. The planning and logistics from the get-go were seamless and Mike formulated a trip itinerary in a timely fashion that was impressive and just too good to pass up.
From pick-up to drop-off the trip surpassed what I initially set out to do. Family members were contacted on my behalf and met, historical records were presented to me, I gained a true picture of where my roots originated, I toured this magnificent and rugged countryside, and induldged in the hearty cuisine typical of the region and of my childhood. The trip brought things all together for me and I truly took away the feeling of belonging in a place. I'll certainly return.
Mike posses an impressive historical knowledge of the Abruzzo region, and of greater Italy and that of Europe. This shined through as my questions came along the way. I was very impressed with Mike's interest and passion for what he does. It really made the journey effortless and natural. The time spent on this tour was never rushed and the cadence was perfectly relaxed. I give it my highest approval and have referred Mike to interested colleagues as soon as I returned. It's been the trip of a lifetime. Truly off the beaten track. Thanks Mike!

Greetings: I read Matt's post regarding his visit to Ortona/Orsogna, Italy.
I am planning a very similar trip and would appreciate any information anyone may be able to give me.
My uncle was killed on Feb 1, 1944 while on recon into Orsogna. He never returned and his body was never found. I wish to visit the area and pay homage to this man and also visit Ortona. I am trying to nail down the location of the Canadian Bn, who replaced the NZ Bn and took over their trenches and posts. I am interested in determining from where (generally) my uncle would have left to attempt a visit to Orsogna to see what the German's were up to. From research I have done, it appears as though the allied assaults into Orsogna may have come from the North East of the town however am not sure. Maybe they advanced from the South East??
Has anyone gone into this detail who could shed some light on my mission?? Are there any WW2 history buffs in the area one should visit while there? or any other good information in this regard?
Your assistance in this matter will be most appreciated and thank you.
Cheers
Parker

Greetings Michael. I am attempting to plan a trip to Orsogna and Ortona area to see where my uncle was killed during WW2. His body was never found. You toured a group from NZ a few years ago and this would be very similar. The Canadian regiment replaced the NZ regiment at the beginning of 1944 and eventually were able to push the Germans North to reclaim the town.
He went into Orsogna on a recon mission on Feb 1, 1944 to determine what the enemy was up to. There was machine gun and flares which suggested he was found. When the Canadians went into Orsogna, they were unable to find his body.
I would like to go to the area where the NZ and Canadians were set up outside the village and kind of follow his route into town. Probably not a practical wish given the terrane however if I could get close to the area???? I am not sure where they were when they attacked the village however I believe the N. Zealanders were on the West side of the town when they began their assault??? and the Canadians used their trenches etc.. Maybe you know from your research. Parker was with the 5th Canadian Armored Division, 11th Infantry Brigade D Company (reserves) when killed.
Then I would like to visit Ortona museum and the town.
Any suggestions you may have for my adventure?? I am a senior and travelling along I believe and probably now not till 2022 due to Covid.
Looking for options and may consider one night in Orsogna, maybe B&B with history minded, English speaking hosts.
Look forward to your response.
Parker

Hi Michael!
We can organise day tours for you! How many people are travelling? When will you be in Abruzzo? How many days will you be staying? Will you have a spare seat in your car for the guide?
Ciao,
Mike
