I visited this site on March 6, 2024, as part of a 30-day self-driving road trip. Having started my journey in Luang Prabang, this was as far south as I traveled before retreating to the north.
Unfortunately, by the first week of March, "burning season" had fully begun, with high temperatures and poor air quality.
Visiting this magnificent site, and walking to the uppermost section of the ruins was a real chore. Fortunately, I carried plenty of water with me.
The reward for trekking to the topmost sections of the temple are the bas-relief sculptures, many of which were in excellent condition.
There is also a museum full of artifacts on site, but it is not air-conditioned and was too hot to enjoy.
Visiting this site will be far more enjoyable during the "cool-dry" season (November-February) or in the "green" season (June-October).

Vat Phu is the discovery of the Khmer period and the antechamber of the archaeological sites of Siem Reap in Cambodia. You should definitely not hesitate to climb to the top of the hill to admire the overall view but also to visit the small temple and the source. Before going up to the sanctuary, you will mark the monumental avenue with multiple markers very similar to Banteay Srei (in Cambodia). What you need to know before going there and apart from the fact that you need good shoes because the steps are steep for the climb, is that you should definitely not visit this temple after the full-day festival. moon - Buddhist festival of Makha Busa between February 22 and 24. Indeed, for many days after this party, the entire site resembles an immense field of the most diverse rubbish left by the participants. Unless you like the “post-rave” atmosphere, it’s best to avoid…

Read everything you can find about Wat Phou before you go. Guides have little info to share. The steps are rickety and uneven. However, the grass slope on the right hand side is relatively easy to climb for much of the way up. The view from halfway up is beautiful and worth the effort. Not for the unfit or unsteady walkers. Not as good as Ankor Wat but still worth a stop

It is definitely worth seeing a hiking up to see another building, ruins, and a great view. It gets very hot and there is little shade, so an early morning visit is recommended.

The most amazing place for ancient history and generally an awesome experience. The staff at the ticket desk are a bit quiet/shy and there could be better signage. The museum was very helpful and I would recommend doing that first as it gives some context. Make sure you give yourself enough time - at least 3 hours to explore the site. The actual Vat Phu area is amazing - some of the stairs are a bit steep and older visitors or ones with mobility issues could find this a problem in terms of getting to the upper levels. The only disappointment was the amount of rubbish, I would hope that this is addressed and a permanent solution found. Also go to the tourist centre in Champasak and consider a boat trip across the Mekong to Vat Tomo - it’s on the other side of the Mekong and was a similar experience in terms of ancient structures, just in a different setting.

As others have written, there is trash left in various places. Is it really okay to manage a World Heritage site so carelessly?
The entrance fee is cheap, they take you from the gate to the base in a cart, and it's a very quiet and nice place. The view is nice, and if you can ignore the trash, it's a wonderful place. The ruins themselves are worth seeing.

Visiting Vat Phu in Champasak was an incredible experience. This historic site, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is breathtakingly beautiful. The temple ruins, perched on a hill, offer breathtaking panoramic views of the valley. The architecture and sculpture are astonishing, testifying to the ancient grandeur of the Khmer kingdom. A must-visit for all history and architecture enthusiasts!

Pre-Angkorian archaeological site to do. Vat Phou (temple-mountain in Lao) is located at the foot of the Phou Kao mountain, with a view of the Mekong River and the province of Champassak. The ancient Khmer temple complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site,

About How many steps to climb ?
Thank you
كُتب بتاريخ 5 نوفمبر 2018
The steepest steps are in seven sets of eleven steps - you can always rest after each set, but the others are right the view from the top is great and you should be rewarded with a nice breeze. There's certainly no rush, so you could take 15 minutes or you could take an hour. Including some painting time (my husband is an artist) and the museum we were at the site for nearly four hours in total. Don't let the steps put you off - the museum and lower complex are good too. Enjoy!

We will arrive about 9.30 in the morning from Vientiane.
We would like to visit Wat Phu and then continue to Don Khong for two nights there and then back to pakse.
1. Would like to leave our luggage at the hotel or tourist office and travel with a small back pack only . Is that a good idea ?
2. How do we get to Champasaac and from there to Wat Phu?
3. How do we go from Wat Phu or Champasac to Don Khong ?
4. From Don Kohng we would like to do a trip to see the 4000 islands and the dolphins and the 2 cascades . How do we do this ?
5 . The following day we would like to return to .Pakse via Tat lo and the Boloven plateau and villages . Are there any tours organised for this or how else can it be done ?
Sorry about these many questions . Hope one of you can help us .

To get to Champasac from Pakse, we took a four seat car to the river, and a short but beautiful boat ride across to the other side. Our Pakse hotel arranged this for a reasonable price, and it went off without a hitch. From the shore of Chamasac, we walked a ways to our hotel/guesthouse. Wat Phu as a good tuk-tuk drive away from the hotel center of town and we had our driver wait for us as we explored the temple. It's not clear from you series of questions where you want to leave your luggage. In Pakse? But since we didn't continue on, but went back the next day to Pakse, it isn't clear to me how much help we are to you. I'm guessing not much.
