Very popular and busy even in October. National Trust Car Park, £7.50 if not a member. Short walk over the Dunes to the Beach which is huge. Lovely Beach to walk along but there are lumps of tar at the moment which you need to avoid

This is a lovely big beach flanked by large sand dunes. Very busy on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Great beach for walking the dog

After traveling for 20 mins with my 2 sons one of which is a special needs adult, we arrived to see a sign saying car park closed, watching the car Infront turning away looking disappointed, no cue or congestion I decided to enter the grounds of the squirrel reserve to turn the car around and leave not knowing what to do after planning and looking forward to a lovely day out, firstly there was no one to monitor the traffic flow on arrival, the hut was closed, and I am fully aware that it is a one in one out system if the car park is full, anyways after nervously entering, it was obvious it was not closed, and open for business, plenty of car park spaces on route to the beach through the squirrel reserve, once at the beach I counted over 30 plus spacious car parking specks, so decided to just stay and pay the £7.50 car park charge and continue on with the day, beach stunning and big enough to fit the whole of Liverpool, so no need to turn guest's away, again no toilets for my special needs son, can't understand why they can't have portable toilets with a 40p charge to cover costs of collection and contract, that's all you coul hear on the beach was poor little kids saying to there mum and dad that they needed the toilet, I actually heard parents telling there kids to use the sea as a toilet ,obviously not having a choice, only toilet is at the squirrel nature reserve, to far to walk if you have learning difficulties or a toddler, had to leave because my son needed the toilet, after leaving noticed even more car park spaces, drove to the gents toilet, filthy and unhygienic, and only one sit down toilet which must get used hundreds of times per day by kids and if you are desperate, water didn't work to wash hands, all very frustrating when you are with a special needs adult who can't understand why he can't wash or dry his hands probably, my concern is why has the toilet issue not been updated and more facilities towards the beach end.. as we where leaving a nearly empty car park in the squirrel reserve noticed the sign still in place saying car park closed, obviously had just been put there in the morning and left there with no attendant to monitor traffic flow.. if only whoever did or does that know how it affects someone's lovely day out..if you see it take a chance and drive through, a word to the wise, I've been bringing my boys here since they where babies for over 28 years and nothing especially the toilets and toilet situation has never been updated, just install pay for toilet's if it's a budget issue, so disappointed

Formby Beach certainly has two sides to it, it is best visited in Winter (as my pictures show).
In Winter... in the winter it is a spectacular beach whatever the weather, with miles of empty sand and crashing waves, it certainly a place to reconnect with the outdoors and find the solitude you’ve been longing for. A place to ponder and relax from the day to day stresses.
However be warned, as the title suggests this beach has two sides!
In Summer AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS! In the summer you’ll get the opposite; 2 hour tailbacks to get anywhere near the beach, mountains of rubbish left by careless visitors and gangs of unwanted ‘chavs’. I too have experienced this hellhole in which gangs of youths set fire to the dunes TWICE!
In the summer it is certainly best avoided, while in winter it provides the windswept and calming haven you’d intended to find.

Visited here yesterday and a had a lovely couple of walks along the designated path routes through the Squirrels and along the Beach. But was very disgusted as to the all the Dog Poo. Some dog owners had taken time to bag there Poo, but left it in the bag at the side of the path or just plied it up with others at the gate. WHY! could they not just carry it a bit further and put it in one of the Large Bins on the Car parks. This Irresponsibility just spoils it for everybody else.

We took our small grandson with the hope of seeing at least one squirrel. When I last visited 15 years or so ago there were dozens.
None now. The car park is excessive in price for what was a one hour walk to find not even a single squirrel.
An update of the precise squirrel population on the national trust website should be made.

Beautiful place to visit. Although ,£7.50 to park your car at 3pm when it shuts at 5pm absolute joke . Never go back . People taking your money clueless. Beaches and surrounding areas should be free to park.

£7.50 to park and then found that the toilets are only open at weekends and Mondays ?????
What happens to our urinary needs on other days ?
How disgusting that the National Trust is taking our money and not providing necessary facilities for visitors.

£7.50 to park for less than 2 hours! No reduction for those with very obvious mobility issues. The "car park" was just a gap behind the sand dunes, full of potholes with no marked bays. We were completely boxed in, on return. For what we paid in excessive charges, we should expect room to access our vehicle. National Trust is only interested in money making!

First time visiting the beach today and what a fabulous place. However very disappointed in a small number of dig owners. I witnessed dogs off the lead fowling and owners not taking responsability for their dogs off and on the beach. One instance I witnessed a dog urinating on a families belongings and the owners did not respond.
It's great to have a beach where families can access aswell as their dogs but please ensure they must be responsable at all times.
There was alot of dog owners today had full responsability for there dogs however there is always some that do not.
As a dog owner myself I was not happy with what I saw and would not return.

It will depend on how fast you can walk and also which route you take. If the distance is 7 miles as suggested above then if you were walking through the nature reserve that involves an up and down walk through sandhills then it could take 2.5-3 hours. By road possibly a little less.

About a 20 minute walk. There is a bus that runs from town. Check online for times.

As its National Trust, I highly doubt it.
However there are campsites nearby and close to the beach!

Sefton do not have any notifications on parking overnight at Formby Point, however, as it is out of season there are no patrols, so it may be okay, however, I would call Sefton just to confirm, speak to parking services and explain why, they may say it is okay, but at your own risk etc., especially due to the situation. PS it gets really cold down there this time of year. Sefton's number is 0845 140 0845. Good luck
