Save yourself and your time. This place is NOT WORTH it. Its a long drive from the main Pondicherry city. The famous "Golden globe" thing which you see in picture, you wont be able to see it that properbly. Apparently, you have to 'pre- book' the tickets if you want to see the inside of the temple. We did a mistake of taking the private Ac guided car tour of the place which costed us 600per person. The tour guide is a resident of Auroville. The whole tour was nonsense, they just basically take you around and show you their residence building and community hall n etc. When asked guide,he told dat many foreigners have taken permanent residence here and work here. The whole place was giving a hippie vibe with unlit street and deserted places. God knowns what things goes on there?.
When we requested the car driver to take us to the golden temple, he denied citing private vehicles are not allowed to visit there which i feel should have been told while booking. I mean why will any1 pay 600 pp to see your residence n crap. Avoid this place n instead chill at some cade or beach in Pondi.

It is a unique township which has become the abode of people of different nationalities, who embody Sri Aurobindo’s principle of simplicity. I was impressed to find that the township subsists on farm produce and small cottage industries managed by the inmates themselves. A major attraction for me was the gigantic golden dome called Matrimandir. It is basically an area for meditation for the residents. Auroville is must visit to get a feel of human unity at its most beautiful.

Auroville is a must go if you visit Pondicherry. The main Matri Mandir can be viewed from a viewing point free but to enter you have to book ahead. From visitors centre there is a free shuttle to Matri mandir. Around the Visitors centre there are shops and cafés. We had lunch in the Auroville cafe. Food was good. Chicken mayonnaise salad came with two rotis. Roast chicken had greens French fries and salad and was good. Mushroom tart also came with salad. Small airconditioned space.
Shops were a little on the higher side price wise.

We walked around 1.5 KM at a high temperature at 2 pm with the kids, thinking we could see the Golden Blonde at least closer, but we could only see it from far away. It looks the same as in the picture.

You need 2 3 hours if you really want to see the place in depth.
Important:
-You have to walk around 2 to 3 km, car only available for handicapped and old PPL and if you want to know it in real spirit go walking only have a umbrella if 🌞
-Many cafes inside, if a bit there,

Auroville is one of its kind in India. If you want to really experience the place then you must go inside the golden globe like structure which is the centre of the place booking for which is online at least 10 days in advance. There is a simple form which one can fill online (the only catch is that permission can be taken @1 person at a time) so better to try using different mobile phones because there are fixed number of slots available per day. Auroville is some 20 kms from pondicherry and one must have some personal vehicle to reach there as there are no bus services. Auroville in and around the golden globe is the core Auroville where you are not supposed to venture without permission (unless you are Aurovillian having an Auroville card). Rest outer Auroville area is for everyone (tourists and travellers) and it's full of cafes and restaurants and have a very chilled atmosphere (staying here when in pondicherry is HIGHLY recommended, instead of staying in the city). If you have scooty, you cannot enter the main Auroville gate, you have to park your vehicle in the parking area and walk to the reception centre where everyone will be shown a 15-20 minutes short film about the place. Afterwards there are two ways to visit
1) For non ticket holders (90% people do this)- Walking 1.5km to the photo area from where the photo of the globe can be taken from far (700-800meters far)
2) For ticket holders (only 10% do this) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED- Bus is available till the golden globe. All your belongings will be kept and a guide will accompany you and guide you till the time you are out of the place (takes at least 45 minutes). Once you are in the premise, you have to remove your shoes and you will be given long white socks to cover till your calves to prevent any dust entering the main core area. Once you reach inside, you will experience extreme silence. The main core area is a huge white circular hall with a sitting capacity of around 30 people at a time. The centre has a big glass ball which receives the sunlight from the top. One is supposed to sit here for 10-15 min in silence. Instructions are to sit only, no meditation, no pose, no humming allowed. Extreme silence. That's it
NOTE- If one wants to enter the core area of Auroville with your vehicle, then there are two ways
1) Book a hotel/hostel inside the core area
2) You can enter via alternate pathways (you have to search for it). These pathways are really awesome to explore, totally quiet but at the same time like a jigsaw puzzle.
CAUTION- Don't explore at night or rainy day as there are no concrete roads and street lights at all and it can be really muddy and scary (Download offline maps if possible)

Located about 10 kilometers away from downtown Pondicherry, this place is difficult to reach without a car. I hired a taxi driver through my hotel to visit it. The ride is uphill and dusty.
There is no entrance fee for this attraction. At the Visitor Center, one looks at the exhibits and watches the related video showing the history of Aurowville. Noted several boutique shops and small restaurants here.
It takes about 1.5 kilometers to walk from here to the Vkew Point of Matrimandir.

We stayed at the Hotel De' L'Orient, walking distance from the promenade. good place. good food. surrounded by good cafes and restaurants, but around 11 km from Auroville. We hired an Enfield and the ride to Auroville was super !
