This is a 7 onsen village n visitors come for the public onsen. We stayed at Yamamotoya Ryokan located in the middle of walking street facing the famous “fresh water Japanese carp swimming “ river .
We arrived at the low - hot season n there were not many travelers.
We tried ichinoru n goshonyu onsen. Both are open air- onsen
The overall onsen experience was awesome esp the open air water flowing n the cave onsen.
Overall impression of kinosaki onsen was
1. Preserved “unesco type” village n old traditional buildings
2. Traditional pace of life - slow n easy.
3. Lots of restaurants serving seafood meals n famous Tajima Beef.
4. This is onsen bath village - must try all onsen if time permits
5. Select yr accommodation facing the River n 1 evening is too short to enjoy the onsen.
6. Will come again in Autumm where weather is cool n breezy.
7. Amanohashidate is the nearby village to visit on the way to Kyoto

We spent 2 nights at Kinosaki. It is famous for its 7 onsen. This makes Kinosaki a popular destination for Japanese. If you want to experience real Japan, this is the place for you. You need to be able to communicate with the locals using some Japanese phrases as few locals speak any English, but this is an authentic experience well away from the big cities. There is various train services to Kinosaki. The station is at the edge of town which is very compact. It would only take 30mins to walk through Kinosaki. There is a free shuttle to the Ryoken in town and plenty of taxis as well. If you want to visit somewhere with few foreigners this is the place

One of the highlights of our trip - pretty little town - especially in the evening when all lit up. The traditional onsen experience includes staying in a traditional Japanese style ryokan which will usually provide the robe and sandals that you wear to each onsen (there are 7 public ones). Walk from one to the next. (Everyone has to bathe in the nude - separated by sex- they are very strict about washing off in communal shower room before entering the bath - be aware if you are too shy or modest for this). After the first onsen, you get used to it!
I would recommend doing this on a spring or fall trip - it was a little too hot in July to fully enjoy all those hot baths!

Kinosaki Onsen is the dictionary definition of a hidden gem!!!! Despite it being not well known to people outside of Japan and in a bit of rural location, it is extremely accessible as it is just a few hours by one single train from the Kyoto central station. And that was my favorite train ride that I have ever been on! Just such beautiful landscape, passing through remote woods and going past mountains. At one point I looked out the window and just felt as though I was in a movie where I was on an expressway heading to some magical, far away place.
And when we got there it was quite a magical place! With it being a small town (just a couple blocks) with a bunch of small, local businesses that is surrounded by nature truly felt authentic and like real Japan. Was also quite beautiful with plenty of mountains around and a nice river in the middle of one of the main roads. No huge buildings or bright lights. Just a quiet place to be with nature.
The genuineness of this stay was even further exacerbated as we had the pleasure of staying in a traditional, family owned Japanese ryokan hotel with an incredibly nice owner. The one where we stayed had a nice, small lobby, a dining room and just one flight of stairs that led to rooms on the second floor.cAs an American my jaw just dropped when I walked in and saw the house we were staying in. Everything was low to the floor. There was a table with a tea set ready. At night we got to sleep on futons that were on the ground. It was just unreal. Also in our rooms were yukatas (bath robes) that we wore to the 7 hot spring baths throughout the town. Passes to the hot springs were also provided with our ryokan accommodation.
The hot springs were just amazing. Just getting to soak in sizeable pools of hot water and being surrounded by nature was so soothing. Everything was just so peaceful and liberating. In the two and a half days that we were there I went to all 7 and each one of them offers something unique. Although my two favorites were Goshono-yu and Kono-yu. In those two you can soak by a waterfall and in a river respectively. Being in nature, so warm and so comfortable! These hot springs were more than anything that I could ever dream of.
Additionally, Kinosaki Onsen offers a rope way gondola up towards the top of one of the mountains right next to the town. It was a scenic ride up going over trees though the real beauty came at the observation deck up top which provided the best view that I had ever seen. Ever. Such a stunning view of Kinosaki Onsen, all the surrounding trees, the Pacific Ocean and a canal going inland. Seeing so many vastly different things at once while being humbled as to how small the town we were staying in was. I was so jaw dropped that I nearly stared in wonder for hours.
Yet another thing that the town has to offer were traditional craft making classes in calligraphy (where we drew a bunch with ink pens and wrote kanji) as well as a specialty straw craft box class. Doing each of them was enjoyable and it provided great souvenirs.
Finally the meals at our ryokan were terrific. The breakfasts and our first dinner was made by the chefs and real good. On our first night we were served a fabulous dinner where all sorts of food was served. About 10 courses or so of food that kept coming and coming. Over the next two nights, our guide organized local people from the town to share dinners with us. Was super fun and a party like atmosphere. That alone was my absolute favorite thing of a great 2 week trip to Japan. In that trip Kinosaki Onsen was by far my favorite location. Far more than the big cities of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.

Kinosaki Onsen is a great day out. I did it from Kyoto on the train but it’s equally easy from Tokyo if you don’t have time for a longer visit.
You can buy a very reasonable 1 day ticket for the onsen (1000 yen in November 2022) that allows you to visit all 7 (or as many as you can manage in a day). It’s important to get the day of your visit right. Don’t go on a Thursday because the best onsen (Goshonoyu Bath) is closed on Thursdays.
Before my visit I found it hard to get clear advice on the best onsens of the 7 on offer. I visited 4 of them and my favourite was Goshonoyu Bath. It has a lovely outdoor pool with natural waterfall. My second favourite was Kounoyu Bath, which has a good outdoor pool too. Third was Satonoyu Bath, which has an outdoor bath with small waterfall on the third floor and also a sauna. Ichinoyu Bath is also worth a visit with a cave that is partly outdoors, but otherwise this onsen is inside.
Kinosaki has a great ropeway too that takes you up to a fabulous scenic view. This is a very nice break from the onsen and a breath of fresh air.

My friends and I will be travelling from Osaka by car and will be spending overnight in Kinosaki. What are the places you can recommend to see between Osaka and Kinosaki that are worth visiting? Thanks

This is a cold month, so type Kinosaki Onsen weather into Google or your Weather app and you can see the temperatures for yourself. Good link!
What times of year is Kinosaki super busy or super quiet? I want to visit when there are very few people around so that I can relax in peace.

I’m so confused on where to stay! I’d like traditional Japanese ryokan, is Tookaya the same as Kinosaki? I’d like to be right in the heart of it all, any recommendations gratefully accepted. I can stretch to &300/ night😁

We stayed in one without meals and ate delicious Kobe beef at there restaurant and visited a local fish restaurant and udon restaurant that were very good. I think that helps with costs.

I’m american-Japanese, has family in Tamba-Sasayama area. I wanna come to take bath there but I have tattoos and my wife, her mom also have some tattoos. Heard that tattooed person can not go to all public bath in japan. Is there any place where we can go in Kinosaki?

I did not face any problems when I visited Kinosaki and I don’t have very big tattoos so probably can be ignored too but Yes some places in Japan don’t allow and you surely get a look from locals.

Hi, what activity do you recommend for a family with a young child at Kinosaki Onsen? Thank you.

Hello graciezhotel. We apologize for the late response, but we thought this would be beneficial to other people wanting to learn more about Kinosaki as well. As commented below, we do have a bathhouse with a pool for children called Jizouyu. But children are allowed in regular baths as well, and we frequently have families coming with children for a family trip. As for what to do in Kinosaki besides bathing for a family, there are a lot of fun activities in the area. There's the Kinosaki Marine World, an aquarium with dolphins, sea lion shows, and more. In town there is the ropeway to take you up Mt. Daishi, as well as the Straw Craft Museum with a fun workshop for anyone to enjoy. You should be able to have fun just strolling around town as well, since there are plenty of ice cream parlors, arcades, shops, and markets. We especially recommend making onsen eggs!

Hi, I am falling in love with this place just by reading the reviews. I would like to visit with a young child, about 2 years old, are there any playgrounds, slides around the street? Also, is it suitable for a young child of about 2 years old to visit the public onsen?
Any good soba restaurants around?
Thank you very much.

I'm not sure if small children are admitted to the onsens. On the contrary, the Japanese go there for relaxation in a peaceful, quiet atmosphere. You are not supposed to splash around or be noisy - quite apart from the fact that you are supposed to have thorougly washed and scrubbed yourself before you get into the water. It might be the wrong place for a small child.

The Konbinis like Family Mart stay open 24/7. When we came out of the onsen around closing time, the only place opened was the Family Mart. Good thing they carried wine and liquor, as well as beer. As for the pubs, I have no idea.

Hi, Guest has to be without clothes? Can guests wear a swimsuit? Kids are allowed?
thanks
GIT

Onsen is without clothes, and you can only bring a small towel in with you. There are strict onsen etiquette and I would suggest that you Google the rules, and make sure you read it before you enter.
Some places allow kids but they must be of certain age and be accompanied by adults. Hope it answers your queries. Thanks.

You can try to search the area around Kinosaki onsen for your hotels. I used Google Maps with "hotels near kinosaki onsen" and compare its review with tripadvisor's one. Hope it help.
