There is also a hell in Nagasaki Prefecture, Unzen Hell.
When you walk along the promenade, steam is rising from everywhere.
The area covered with white soil between the ancient and new hot springs of Unzen is called the Unzen Hell Zone.
Hot springs and fumes are gushing from everywhere.
It is a hell of a sight to see the strong sulfur odor of the hot springs making it stand up.
It is also known for being once the site of Christian martyrdom.
There is also a martyr monument.
It consists of more than 30 Hells, including the Great Cries, Threads, and Clean Seven.
Unzen Jigoku Onsen has handed down a variety of anecdotes and legends.

Hell valley with hot boiling mud pools. Smoke with strong sulphur smell. Yellow residue of sulphur with white residue over the whole valley.

If you visit Unzen hell valley with all the steam sprouting out from the ground, it is almost similar to being in Geyser, Iceland or Rotorua in New Zealand.
Very awesome view of the benefits of staying near volcanoes . The hot water generated are piped to the adjacent hot spring hotels due to their supposed healing properties. This place is very popular amongst local tourists and is quite a nice hideaway .

Fun place to walk around and be mesmerised by the propulsion of the water from underground. There is a stall that sells onsen eggs cooked in hot spring.

宿泊している小浜温泉の宿からレンタカーで３０分ほどで到着しました。平日の正午前でしたが観光客は少なく街自体にも活気が感じられませんでした。
温泉神社横の駐車場にクルマを止めて周辺を散策しました。地肌から湯気が噴出しており自然の尊さを感じることが出来ました。
箱根の大涌谷のような賑やかな観光地かと思っていたので拍子抜けしたというのが正直な感想です。

３月上旬、夕刻に行きました。寒い日だったせいもあるのでしょうが、噴き上げる水蒸気が半端なく、場所によっては前が見えないほどでした。星野リゾート横から歩き、八万地獄、お糸地獄と見て回りました。まだまだ山の上に向かって散策路が続いていましたが、暗くなってきたので、ほんの一部だけ見学してきました。
散策マップを見るとかなり広範囲に広がっています。植物の名前も表示されていて、ゆっくり散策を楽しめる場所です。

雲仙で初めての地獄巡り(？)をしてきました。清七地獄から始まり、お糸地獄、大叫喚地獄と巡ってきました。少し早歩きで1時間ほどでした。蒸気が至る所から噴き出していて、非日常を感じることができました。所々眺望が良い場所があり、撮影スポットとなっていました。ちなみに、日本で初めての国立公園が雲仙だったことをこの地で知りました。雲仙は当時(1934年)も今も多くに人にとって憩いの場所のようです。

新湯共同浴場前の駐車場から、大叫喚地獄、お糸地獄、清七地獄、温泉神社などを一時間ほどかけて観光しました。立ち込める硫黄の匂い、吹き上げる水蒸気や荒々しい岩など見どころ満載で、大自然のダイナミズムを実感できました。

地域全体がさびれた感じがすごいです。
いい温泉があるので、お洒落なカフェとか、地獄蒸しで卵や肉、野菜など食べられるお店（別府のように）とか作って街全体の雰囲気づくりをすれば観光地としてもっと流行るのになぁと、もったいなく感じます。
星野リゾートが街の雰囲気アップを牽引してくれたらいいな。
ホテルの上の方の階だと、海側の景色はすごくいいですし、硫黄の匂いに包まれる伝統的な温泉街です。
