Well laid out park with both history, memorials and the cemetery with a general community park and play too and good parking. Visiting the main museum is essential for first time visitors.

This is an amazing monument to an amazing people. Okinawa lost almost a third of their population in WW2, caused by both sides. This memorial (peace, not war) maintains an unbiased stance, taking no side in the conflict the Okinawan's didn't want and had nothing to do with, but suffered greatly in nonetheless. A long drive from Naha but worth the trip. Hearing first hand accounts of the battle is gut wrenching. If travelling by taxi recommend making sure you get there early as later in the day it can be hard to get a taxi back.

糸満市の海の前にある平和公園です。
園内には、平和の礎があり沖縄戦により亡くなられた方の名前があります。
かつて恐ろしい戦争があったとは思えないほど、緑と海に囲まれた静かな公園でしたが、手を合わさずにはいられませんでした。

I visited the Peace Memorial Park with a tour group and it did not disappoint. The grounds are much larger then I expected, you need several hours here to explore the grounds, see the museum, and take in the scenery. I didn't have time for the museum or indoor buildings, I will do that next time, but I walked the grounds and viewed many of the memorials. The grounds are well organized and maintained and all of the memorials were easy to read and beautifully done. There are some observation decks are certain locations, the views of the ocean from this location are amazing! Near the parking lot there are souvenir shops and a few place to grab a bite to eat or have an ice cream. I will definitely be back here and will plan to visit longer to see it all.

平和祈念公園そのものから平和云々はないが、公園内にある沖縄戦の戦没者の碑「平和の楚」からは戦没者の無念や平和への願いが伝わってくるようだ。平日の誰もいない公園、緑の芝生、時計塔、そして平和の楚と資料館。喧噪のない静けさの漂う青い空の下はいま平和である。

かなり前にツアーで訪れた事がありますが、再訪しました。
資料館(観覧料個人大人300円)は時間が許せば、ぜひ訪れて見て下さい。今の平和の時代の有難みがひしひしと心にしみます。
展示はかなりビジュアルでわかりやすく、歴史や戦争を体験するゾーンとなっています。
平和祈念の理念が伝わってくる資料館でした。
40haもの広大は園内には、戦没者墓苑や平和の礎が点在しています。

沖縄の戦争資料などがあり、外の慰霊碑周辺はなんだか神聖な雰囲気すら感じます。
資料館は有料ですが、歴史的な資料をみて、展望台から島の周りを見渡せますので晴れた日の景色は必見です。
また、公園内を100円で案内して回るミニ観光バスがありますので、それに乗って色々案内を聞くと公園内の情報が入ってきます。

Allow yourself time to wander the grounds of this famous Museum; the town shrines that line the cliffs and inner paths dedicated to their citizens lost in the Japanese invasion in WW11 are perhaps even more moving in their sincere simplicity than the displays in the Museum proper. The constant surge of the Pacific at the foot of the cliffs is a peaceful refrain as you ponder the plaques detailing their loss.

We will be in Okinawa next March while on a cruise. How did you get to the Peace Memorial Museum? Did you go to the Navy Underground Headquarters? How did you find the shuttle bus? I cant find anything on the website about the shuttle? How much time did you allow at the sights. Any information you can give will be very helpful.

We rented a car actually, for the peace memorial museum I don't think there is any shuttle
I suggest if you're short of time, just take a taxi as you don't want to spend so much time travelling there
We spent about an hour and a half there
But it's a really beautiful place, you can go and explore, it's huge and go around sunset time, it's beautiful
I'm sorry I don't have much info on public transport in Okinawa
I would like to know if my cousin's name (William J Neary from Iowa) is inscribed on the wall, he was killed May 25, 1945 on Ie Shima.

There were many walls upon walls of names of soldiers and civilians killed in the Battle of Okinawa. I didn’t look closely to see if there were American names however i did notice a number of Americans visiting the memorial. The memorial itself is very similar in style to the Vietnam memorial. It might be worth a visit.

You can make it, but make sure you include ShuriCastke to visit. The Peace Park is open and spacious so when on site, move quickly or you will spend your whole time there.
