We offer unique experiences for travelers looking to get away from busy cities and tourist attractions in favor of simple local communities where traditional culture blends naturally into modern life. Our goal is to offer more unique and memorable experiences for visitors who want to go beyond the typical tourist destinations. We also strive to sustain and protect our local culture and traditions.

We had such a great time walking through the town! Tako was super friendly and knowledgeable about the towns history and her level of engagement was spot on! The lunch prepared by two local ladies was one of the best food we had. The sake and soy sauce brewery visits were really nice and it was great to meet some of the locals. I would highly recommend this tour to anybody who enjoys a more authentic experience!

The tour was great, it was customised for us and the service was absolutely amazing. We were picked up from the Shinkansen station, and because it was raining, a car was provided. We saw all the great sites in the rural area and the atmosphere was great.
The English guide was very knowledgeable and she took us to some lesser knows spots, such as some woodworking craftsmen and an amazing place for lunch.
We enjoyed it very much and I would recommend everyone who is closeby Biwako lake to book a tour with Biwako Backroads.

Took tour in fall of 2024. Spoiler: excellent tour and a welcome change of pace from the big temples and grand movements of history, focusing down to a small but still beautiful corner, away from the crowds. Good value and worth a day trip from elsewhere in the region to anyone interested in Japanese craft or in history outside the biggest cities.
Tour consisted of a walking tour of part of the old road system (now mostly homes and fields), lunch at a quiet restaurant above a spring-fed stream (live fish are kept in the stream, under the building!), and an afternoon walking tour of a town of craftspeople; I also arranged to add a session with a local woodcarver. Tour guide and locals were all friendly and accommodating and happy to explain about the region’s history of producing the various pieces of elaborate family altars. Area was beautiful in fall colors; weather was fortunately good. Woodcarving session was quite approachable and it was also fascinating to see skilled craftsmen and their tremendous collections of hand tools and works.
Walk was not particularly challenging though might be harder in heavy rain or snow. Apparently the region peaks in popularity in summer due to blooming of water flowers, but suspect there’s something to be found in any season. Highly recommend.

My friends and I had an amazing tour with Biwako Backroads. Our guide, Ryo, was so friendly and knowledgable about her hometown, which really made our experience very special. We highly recommend taking any of Biwako Backroads' tours, for the unique experience and incredible people that run the tours.

This was one of the best experiences in our time in Japan!!! It was authentic, real and so inviting. We got to meet fantastic people and try real authentic cuisine, learn about traditional sake and soy! Our tour guide was so friendly and knowledgeable! Would 100% recommend.

Tako took us on a journey through the rural backstreets and provided great insight to the history of the town. Despite the rain we had an amazing day and would highly recommend the experience

We had a great tour with Ryoko. We enjoyed the personal touches (refreshments at her house, meeting her mother, seeing her family's personal shrine and other older parts of their house as well as the garden with bonsai trees at least 40-50 years old) and also learning about the local area - such as the tatami mat repairer, the shoyu and sake factories, and etiquette at the shrines. The time of year of our tour meant that we saw some rice harvesting (by reasonably sized machinery). It was a great day out. Ryoko was alot of fun to be with.

Ryo took us on an excellent tour through Kinomoto and surrounding Mountains/villages. Thank you Ryo for kind hospitality and showing us around your amazing home village, it was a highlight of our trip to Japan!

This was one of the BEST tours! Our guide, Rio was fantastic! She was informative and friendly. We will not forget the scenery. If you want an authentic village experience, this is a MUST do! Highly recommended!

The Nakasendo Historical Town and Hidden Craft Village Walking Tour with Tako was great! We loved getting to see the historical village and meeting local craftsmen. We were able to have a truly authentic experience and even invited into a locals home for afternoon tea and coffee. Tako did everything she could to make sure we were welcomed and comfortable. We would highly recommend this to anyone looking for authentic Japanese experience and opportunity to see a beautiful village. It was a great opportunity to slow down from busy Kyoto.
