Enjoyed a lovely walk along the aqueduct, along the canal and back through the tunnel. A great walking area.

nice canal walk followed by a trip across the top of the aqueduct with family and dogs, lovely views

We were staying in a cottage in Shropshire and popped over to Wales for the day to visit the Pontcysyllte aqueduct, Llangollen and canals. At the end of the day we went to Chirk which turned out to be the highlight. The architecture is amazing and views walking over Chirk aqueduct fabulous. A sign at one end welcomes you to England, so you can actually hop between England and Wales! We watched the sunset through the viaduct arches adjacent to the aqueduct. We were also lucky enough to be walking across at the same time as a narrowboat was crossing and followed the boat through the nearby Chirk tunnel which was great timing as they lit our way otherwise you'd need a torch. If you have an hour to spare in the area Chirk is definitely worth a visit. We parked on a nearby road making sure not to block any driveways.

If you are passing then this is a must see. The canal is lovely and the aqueduct is a stunning piece of architecture. The railway bridge next door is also lovely and they compliment each other.

This aqeduct is stunning and you must walk over it if in the area. If a train goes past it is even better! Not for those that dont like heights. Vary nice cafe at one end too!

You have to walk across this iconic landmark to really appreciate the view. Then, walk underneath it to appreciate the workmanship. We would be are pushed to build this today!

We were passing by,never heard of it before as we thought it was the Aquaduct before LLangollen,Pontysithe?
You can walk across this,quite safe,with the railway on the other bridge,Spectacular.
Parking ,just off the traffic island.
You can walk along the tunnel,viewing the canal boats.

So here you can
1) Walk from Wales to England and from England to Wales (its on the border!)
2) Walk across the Aquaduct
3) Walk through a tunnel, with possibly some boats navigating their way through
If its hot, then the tunnel will come as some relief from the heat! However, have a torch ready (a phone torch will do) as its dark in there, and not much space to move round people coming in the other direction
Park up the road (by the police station) and there is a cafe there for when you return.

Yes it’s not as high or as long as the more famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct an hours walk up the canal tow path towards Llangollen. But it is significantly quieter and you will probably have this one to yourself when you walk across it which is not something you can say about Pontcysyllte.
If you are driving here there is no official car park but there is parking at the Caffi Wylfa just up the road.
An interesting point is at the tunnel end of the aqueduct a sign welcomes you to Wales. You then walk over the aqueduct and at the far end another sign welcomes you to England thus begging the question where exactly are you when you are on the aqueduct?

Lovely day out, we have dogs so we parked in Llangollen (what a lovely little town) and walked along the canal about 4 miles to the aqueduct, we then walked across and stopped at the Aqueduct Inn (Chirk side) fantastic views, lovely beer and friendly staff and then caught the bus back to Llangollen (bus stop opposite).
The views across the aqueduct were superb and easy to walk and pass others, lots of boats going across and if your lucky you will see a train.

Which café do you purchase the tickets for 45 minute boat trips on Chirk Aqueduct please? I have contacted one café and they know nothing about it.

Hi, sorry can't help you with the 45 min boat ride ticket, but, if you contact the Llangollen Tourist Information I'm sure they can point you in the right direction.

Hi. Is there parking at Chirk Aqueduct? And which is better - Chirk or Pontcysyllte aqueduct?

There is a cafe very close to both the chirk tunnel and aquaduct that has free parking for the walk and is lovely to pop in for a cuppa. It's just across the road from the aquaduct and tunnel.
