Loads of great fun experiments for the children to do and interesting tours of the telescopes. However it took 45 mins to get two jacket potatoes and a toastie in an empty cafe. Oh and it cost £19. Otherwise great!

We spend an interesting few hours at the Observatory Science Centre; the exhibits are interesting and the two talks we attended were good. It was great to see the dome roof open and the telescope move around as well has learning about the history of the center and how all about telescopes. Outside there is plenty of room to sit and have a picnic, plus there are two children’s play areas (depending on age of child). The Observatory has seven dooms (six in the main area and one in the woods a short distance away) – one a few of these are now in a working condition, but there are trying to raise the funds to bring others back to life.
The Observatory Science Centre was formally the Herstmonceux Royal Observatory situated in the ground of Herstmonceux Castle. The observatory moved to Herstmonceux, from Greenwich London after WW2. The Castle and the Observatory are now separately owned, but both are well worth visiting (although only rarely can you go inside the castle).

We arrived at 18:15 hrs trying to find the entrance in the dark, to be told it opens at 18:30.
There was several domes with telescopes and was great being able to see the planets Saturn and Jupiter. Problem was it was all chaotic and no sense of order to find a dome without a queue.
It would have made sense if all the visitors had been grouped together and explained what each dome offered. Then brake us up into smaller groups to go to different domes and move clockwise round.
Lots of interactivities in the main building for all to use. A lovely cafe serving tea, coffee and cakes plus toasted sandwiches which was a welcome sight.
The place was open from 6:30 pm to 11:00, not realising it was an open visit between these times. More could be added for a professional visit

Its so interactive my boys loved it and learnt alot they found the telescope talk fascinating and enjoyed the out door play area and water play.

A great place to spend an hour or so. Fascinating talk in the telescope and an interesting place to walk around. Seemed to cater well for children and families.

Brilliant, my 3 children aged 5, 6 and 8 loved this. It's great for them to be able to get involved with so many interactive activities. Good value for money and friendly staff too.

We live close by but has never actually visited. Now we are already looking at when we can go back. It's just as engaging as the Science Museum in London, but on our doorstep. It's very interactive. We had a 7 year old, a 6 year old and a 4 year old and they all loved it - as did the adults. We will be back with out 10 year old and 12 year old. You could easily spend the whole day at the Observatory.

Although it's aimed at kids slightly more than adults there is still plenty to do for the grown ups.
The staff are friendly, knowledge and enthusiastic and there are dozens of hands on experiments which are all well maintained and in good working order.

We only stopped for a quick photo but the observatory looked very interesting. Located in the same estate as the castle. Could easily combine the two for a day out.

What age group for visits. Times of opening sat 14th January

Not entirely sure of opening times for January but we went with children aged from 18 months to 10. Probably not ideal for the youngest child but all the others (5-10) had the best time ever! As did the adults - tons to see & do & interact with for most ages but we wouldn't take the youngest again. Have fun!
