‪Well preserved example of Northumberland stronghold. This is well worth a visit and a look around. Bestbenjoyed in Summer as winter moths are pretty cold up here!‬

‪Should be advertised as a Manor. It is not a castle. So disappointing, I never got my camera out which is unusual for me.‬

‪We were staying in holiday cottage across the path from castle and were curious enough to pay a visit ! Really enjoyed what we saw and also had a guide book which helped as there isn’t too much info dotted around ! Hope the cottages on site get renovated to holiday cottages.‬

‪Someone has reviewed this place as being magical and I agree. The site and buildings are so complex I had to buy a guidebook. It is not a museum nor a medieval castle in the true sense. It is however a complex of buildings, rebuilt and restyled over hundreds of years as a fortified manor house. It remained occupied until 1966, you will find that difficult to believe.
Aydon is not a ruin. It is however empty rooms which can be walked through and studied.
Parking is down the lane and plentiful for the amount of visitors. there are toilets on site.
Approx. 1 hour for a visit.‬

‪What a lovely place! Very warm welcome by the staff member on duty, knowledgeable and informative about other sites to visit while in the area.
Parking is pay and display if you are not a member of English heritage, if you are not a member yet and are in Northumberland, but a membership just for this county as there are so many sites to visit the membership pays for itself!
It’s off the beaten track and the road is narrow in places but it’s such a tranquil location and there is a lot to see of this medieval castle/ manor so it’s well worth finding.‬

‪Old castle/manor house run by English Heritage. Interesting for me because you can clearly see the changes made to the property over the years. The last inhabitants moved out in 1966. It must have been fantastic living there.
Lady at reception was very pleasant and informative.‬

‪It’s more of a manor house than a full blown castle and because of that it is remarkable complete. It was lived in for many centuries and looks like it survived without being besieged very often, which is rare for the wild border country. Still fully rooted so one can imagine what it was like to live there.‬

‪Saturday 28th August 2021. My husband and I visited Aydon Castle under the care of The English Heritage.

Aydon castle is almost completely intact, and it is one of the finest and most unaltered examples of a 13th century English manor house. Set in beautiful and secluded Northumberland woodland, it was originally built as an undefended residence, but was almost immediately fortified on the outbreak of Anglo-Scottish warfare.

Nevertheless it was pillaged and burnt by the Scots in 1315, seized by English rebels two years later, and again occupied by Scots in 1346. The castle later became a farmhouse in the 17th century and was lived in up until 1966.

My husband and I spent over two hours mooching round this lovely historic manor, and spending time sitting in the wonderful walled orchard, it was so lovely and peaceful. We took lots of photographs and I even managed to find inspiration here as I wrote a poem called ‘The Home Coming’.

This is a really magical place and well worth the visit if you are in the area.‬
