I was shopping for gifts for my boss and father and getting nowhere when I came across the 88 Things to do in Tokyo brochure in my hotel lobby and found H Tokyo listed. Anyone who spends 30 seconds in Tokyo understands that right socks, umbrella and handkerchief are a must. With this in mind I googled and up came an article about H Tokyo in the style section of esquire.co.uk. I was sold and I went exploring to find this little diamond.
It was a bit of a hike from Sangenjaya Station (especially in Tokyo's 35 degree summer heat), a bit under 1km, but worth ever sweaty step...it was then I really needed a handkerchief of my own. I later found out that Buses stop almost across the road from the shop but I have only mastered the trains in Tokyo...I'm a bit to scared to get the bus without explicit instructions.
The counter girls were amazing and while their English as not fluent it was more than enough to have a conversation. The quality of their handkerchiefs (or should that be handkerchieves) is exceptional. The variety of colour, pattern and original design is unrivalled. These little pocket squares of vibrant variety are hand stitched and made from quality natural fibres.
The staff bent over backwards to assist and waived the normal 5 day waiting period and embroidered one of the handkerchiefs with insignia for me. There are around a dozen different fonts to choose from and 50 or more coloured thread. Each square of goodness only cost me ¥1200 and the embroidery was only an additional ¥300.
After shopping the staff will help you with directions to the bus stop where you can travel directly to Shibuya, to continue shopping, in less than 10 minutes and air conditioned comfort.
You will not regret this little adventure and the toughest decision you will face is which colours you want your initials printed in!
