Battery Maisy was a German defensive position at Grandcamp-Maisy during the Second World War. World War I. Since 2006, the bunker and trench system has been gradually exposed. Around 2 km are now open to the public. In the garden at the entrance, a few guns and a landing craft from D-Day are displayed first. On the subsequent tour through the ditches you pass several cannon positions with well-preserved field howitzers and bunkers. The trenches are well developed and signposted in French and English. At the entrance you will also receive an information sheet in German with the ticket (8 EUR).
Conclusion: If you want to see the many sterile museums and the conditions under which the soldiers lived and fought on D-Day, you should definitely take a look at the Maisy battery. It is just a few minutes' drive from the Pointe du Hoc.

I don't want to spoil this for anyone. There are so many sites to see in Normandy. This one made a big impression on us. Though I found some of it disturbing/chilling, we were glad we experienced it. It was also fascinating to us that all of this was left and forgotten for so many decades.

They are still uncovering more trenches and bunkers. A very interesting and educational site - you get a real understanding of the situation the germans were in on the site. To see the bunkers with 3 feet thick ceilings to protect them from bombs being dropped, the maize of trenches.... your imagination really kicks in walking around and exploring.

It proposes a tour of a German battery discovered a few years ago, whose charm is precisely in that it remains practically as it was at the end of the WWII, because it had been buried.
You get a perfect idea of what it was like and the organization.
It is true that it could be a little better maintained, but still, it is worth the visit if you are in the area.

The site itself is very interesting. The beginning of the walk promises with very clear directions and interesting signs even if they had to be translated from English to French with Google. Unfortunately we soon see that signs are missing or broken which hinders the visit. The lighting systems in the bunkers are to be reviewed because we have to go blindly into the rooms to trigger the ignitions when there may be holes, steps or water. It's a pity we get the Impression that the place was presented at one time and has since been abandoned.

This is definitely worth a visit. You tour the site by walking through the remains of the trenches that linked the bunker systems together. You can enter the bunkers and tobruks and you get a real feel for the site.

Go your way. Just to see the front of the site, flee!!! We took the plunge after paying an entrance fee of 8 euros per person (much too expensive). Weapons on the spot wither, paths are not passable after a rain. The buildings are not lit at all. Thanks on the phone. It is a nice scam. And if you need to go to the bathroom before the visit, I hope you have a good heart.

I had read bits about the battery and seen a documentary on discovery about it
I knew what to expect and was very pleased on what I found.
The fact that the battery had been covered over and only recently discovered (last 15/20 years) shows
You can take your self back to what it would of looked like and what would of been like June 1944
With that I'm mind I truly enjoy my visit

If you are in the area, and interested in the D-Day landings, this is well worth a visit. The Maisy battery is a complex of gun emplacements, ammunition stores, infantry barracks, infantry canteen, radio huts and even a hospital, all linked by trenches to protect the occupants. When we visited in August, the trenches were pleasantly dry, grass-banked walkways.
The battery caused difficulties for the troops landing on D-day until it was put out of action by rangers a few days later. There seems to be some controversy as to why it was not higher on the allies’ list for destruction on D-day and why it was buried and not mentioned afterwards. You’ll have to read the owner’s book to appreciate the research he has done on this site and the conclusions he has come to.
At the time of writing, further excavations are planned to develop the site. It takes about 1-2 hrs to view and is mainly in the open.

Very impressive visit. Go there one day without rain because indeed the trenches can be quickly muddy.
Dogs allowed, important to us.

Hi,
Sorry if my response isn't accurate I translated your question with google.
Anytime from April the 1st - September the 30th we are open every day. If you would like a guided tour they are possible in English but sadly not Dutch. We do have a partner in the Netherlands who bring tours to us. They are Battlefield tours NL. Our contacts names are Anne and Danny. Great and very knowledgable tour guides.
If you just arrive on any day you can visit the complex on your own with a free map and then come and ask me any questions regarding the history you may have.
I hope this helps. If you have more questions please contact me via our website.
Best wishes
Dan

Hi: Can you provide me with the contact information for Gary at the Maisy Battery? I will be visiting in January when, I understand, the Battery is normally closed, but I also understand that he sometimes gives private tours...Thanks a lot!
