Easy to visit, St Dominic’s church is located right in the historic centre of Recanati, on the main piazza. You can see it alongside the Palazzo Communale, the Torre del Borgo and the statue of Giacomo Leopardi.
Built by Dominican friars at the turn of the 13th/14th centuries, this was initially a humble single nave church with a wooden roof. It stayed this way, unaltered, for around 400 years.
The highlight here, is a fresco by the famous Venetian master, Lorenzo Lotto. He was commissioned in 1506 to paint 2 works for the church. One was to be a grand centrepiece for the high altar and the other, a smaller fresco of St Vincent Ferrer for a side altar.
Only the smaller fresco still remains inside the church although both the works are still here in Recanati. The altarpiece, a large six-piece polyptych, was moved to the Villa Colloredo Mels Museum where you can see it along with several other Lotto works (it’s a very good local museum and well worth visiting).
The main feature on the outside is the highly decorative doorway. It was added during the Renaissance period. Made of solid, white Istrian stone, it is festooned with garlands and flowers of stone, and has upturned baskets of fruit spilling down the sides. Columns flank the doorway and it’s guarded by two stone lions, although it has to be said that the lions are looking more sad than scary. They have been badly battered and weathered by time.
During the 18th century, the church was largely transformed into what we see here today.

Chiesa meravigliosa. Siamo rimasti colpiti dalla sua bellezza una volta entrati nella sua ricchezza di dettagli e opere. Una delle chiese più belle del borgo a nostro avviso.

E’ la chiesa nella piazza principale del paese. Facciata semplice, caratteristica nei suoi mattoncini in linea con il resto del borgo. Risale alla fine del tredicesimo secolo anche se ha successivamente subito più di una trasformazione. Se intendete fotografarla da fuori evitate il sabato mattina: c’è il mercato e la facciata è spesso un po’ ‘coperta’ dalle ingombranti bancarelle degli ambulanti.

Si trova in centro proprio in piazza Leopardi, quindi vale la pena dare una sbirciata, niente di eccezionale

Si trova vicino a Pz. Leopardi. Ha un bella porta di legno lavorato e una lunetta con la statua del Santo. Interno non visto.

La Chiesa si trova in un’angolo di Piazza Giacomo Leopardi , costruita in mattoni ha un bellissimo portale e nella lunetta è presente una statua che presumo sia del Santo , purtroppo non si può visitare l’interno
