‪One of the most complete small Medieval castles in Europe‬

‪This is one of the most complete small Medieval castles in Europe, and is worth a detour. Its strategic location above the Dordogne is immediately apparent.

We parked at the foot of town in P1 and walked the steep incline to the Chateau. Others drove the narrow streets but my rental SUV would have have had a hard time fitting. Note: look for other ways to get to Chateau Parking.

We paid 23 Euro for two to enter and at first I thought that was expensive, but it was in fact a bargain. There is much to see. The exhibit on Eleanor of Aquitaine and her son, Richard the Lionheart, was excellent. The public rooms of the caste are great. You get a better understanding of life in a medieval castle by visiting. There is also a Renaissance staircase and rooms adorned in Renaissance style. See the great hall, the kitchen and everything else as you tour.

The walls and ramparts of the castle are intact and thanks to renovations over the past 20 years, it’s remarkably intact. I expected we’d stay a few minutes but instead we stayed well over an hour.‬

‪Poor value for money. Parking is a serious issue‬

‪The only good thing about this place are the stunning views.
The entry price is exorbitant and really adds up for families with children.
There are no genuine artifacts on display, only props.
Very poor accessibility for disabled/elderly. 
There is also a serious issue with the main car park outside the castle. Despite the ticket machines not working, we were ticketed €50 and told if we want to contest the charge, we have to attend court in Beynac! Hardly practical or fair, especially as we don't live in the region.
Parking should be free and included with the entry price.
I wouldn't recommend this place until they sort the parking issue out.

Sorry to hear you had such a poor experience. To set the record straight: The parkings are managed by the «Mairie » (the city hall) of Beynac-and-Cazenac not the castle. Following your comments please find the current prices for the visit of the chateau de Beynac: 11.50 per adult FREE for children Under 10. This gives you access not only to the fortress itself but also to the current exhibition on the Life of Aliénor d’Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart. Free audioguide. One to two hours worth of visit. Enjoy the rest of your stay in our beautiful Perigord!

‪Amazing castle with views to match‬

‪The castle is amazing and the whole experience is enhanced by the ability to down load a guide to your smart phone via a QR code - a near idea that worked very well. Lots to see indoors and the views from terraces and the keep are fabulous. We spent a very enjoyable two hours immersing ourself in French/English history. Wonderful.‬

‪I would say this is more of a fortified house than a castle, very informative as to how it's linked into the English Monarchy.
The display showing the restoration project was very good.
Worth the climb up from the river through the village. ‬

‪We had only parked by the river to look for a riverside walk, which wasn’t there, but when we looked up at the Chateau thought we’d see if we could make the walk up the hill. Just about made it and so glad we did. The history running through the building is truly amazing as is the way the building has been preserved. The audio guide available on smart phones via a QR code brought everything to life….one of the best guides we have experienced. We spent over two hours and came away stunned by what we had learnt, and seen, particularly the views over the surrounding countryside.‬

‪J'ai visité le château le jour de la rentrée scolaire et étonnamment, il y a avait un peu de monde. Très beau château perché sur un éperon rocheux. La visite avec l'audioguide était très instructive. J'ai adoré la musique dans l'audioguide, notamment celle du film Les Visiteurs. Le 2ème volet y a été tourné et on se serait cru dans le film au Moyen-âge. Génial. Malgré son âge, le château est en très bon état. La vue sur la Dordogne est vraiment splendide. Dommage de voir par contre des piscines et des caravanes et/ou camping cars dans un camping en contre-bas qui gâchent la vue. J'aurais pensé qu'il y avait un périmètre à respecter autour des monuments historiques pour éviter d'avoir ces verrues dans le paysage.‬

Merci pour votre message et pour l’intérêt que vous avez pu portez au château de Beynac au cours de votre visite. Le château est effectivement en bon état du fait d’une attention et d’un soin incessant d’entretien et de restauration. Ainsi le logis seigneurial dans lequel vous avez pu découvrir exposition sur Alienor d’Aquitaine et Richard Cœur de Lion a été ouvert au public cette année après un long travail de restauration. Il n’avait jamais été rendu accessible. Sa charpente représente 1/7eme de celle de Notre Dame et elle a été restaurée par des compagnons qui œuvrent aujourd’hui sur Notre Dame. Ils sont d’ailleurs périgourdins. Nous sommes heureux que vous ayez pu l’apprécier. C’est une grande fierté pour tous les membres de l’équipe d’y accueillir des amoureux de notre beau patrimoine. Encore merci pour votre visite, et bon séjour en Périgord!

‪Alors voila on est venu avec un groupe d’amis une chaude journée de septembre et on a été scandalisé par le fait qu’aucune climatisation n’a été mise en place dans les magnifiques salles séculaires afin de fournir un confort optimal‬
