Saw the sign and decided to take a look. There is a barrier and you pay two pound to enter. A national park with access to a beach. Numerous walking paths. Child's play area. Good toilets on at least two parts of the site.
Popular with families and dog walkers. There is also a small catering van which serves coffee and snacks and even does special themed evenings at sundown. Ideal for those who love the outdoors.

It does seem very outdated that access is only by coin. There are plenty of warning signs to this effect but if you’ve no coins you are stuck. In a contactless age please sort out your access arrangements. We had no coins on us so could not visit

Beautiful nature reserve, we reached the huge beach and it was a very pleasant walk. Lots of horses in a large paddock.

We have been before for a wonderful walk. This time it was different. Still gorgeous however a couple of points would make it even better!
Firstly: better signage to let people know that there is a £2 charge & OINS are ONLY acceptable. The number of cars Turing away as they had no coins (even us) was shocking.
Have signs in Leuchars so people know.
8 miles round trip to get change. In this day and age it is cards & phone charging.
Secondly: Toilets a bit of a let down, if you’re paying £2 facilities should be open all the time and not a portaloo.
Thirdly: Better SIGNAGE to get to the beach over the nature reserve and many many pools of water. If you came with children it would be a nightmare, you could get lost easily.
In all it was a superb day, I broke myself walking miles, dog like a wee energiser bunny though….

What a lovely place. Walk as far as you like away from the world and magnificent views from every direction.
We walked from the car park to the point on the tay and we saw everything from rabbits to rare birds, and from deers to dolphins, with seals thrown in for good measure.
I can't describe how nice the area is with world war 2 history added for good measure.
If you want some peace and quiet with brilliant views this is what you need.

Remember to bring £2 in coins for the barrier, as there is no other way to park.
Great parking, toilets and food hut. The old ice house is really interesting (just north of car park).
There is a naturist beach / nudist beach area, 20 mins walk south of the Kinshaldy Beach car park. People there were polite and sensitive to us as clothed visitors, so it was refreshing to see this cultural quirk.
The bird observation hides are a short drive away, great for water birds but also red squirrels.

We were holidaying in Crail, and drove over on recommendation. Parking was easy, you need two pound coins!! No contactless payments for the Forest parking. Everything has good paths and is well signposted. The cafe in the car park was particularly good, and there are loads of picnic benches, a big play area and loos nearby. We walked to the beach, the dunes are vast and were flooded when we visited, and so had to navigate a labyrinth of flooded section in order to cross to the beach. When we arrived, it was empty, the beach is huge and there was a slight fret, so it was very atmospheric . Very beautiful with a backdrop of level dunes and forest. A very good beach for beachcombing - lots of shells, we found lots of sea potatoes. The wetlands created by the floods in the dunes, I guess will be a haven for wildlife. We saw a skylark. A good big beach for running a dog, with fine golden sand. So it would also be a great spot for a family beach day (although a long schlep with the buckets and spades!)

Villa sited on a whim as saw the sign when touring the area. Cost £2 to park- need coins. The road to it has been repaired in parts but still a bit bumpy. Worth the journey though. We didn’t walk in the forest but headed to the beach. Easy for the able bodied but no easy route for those with mobility issues. The beach and coastline is gorgeous

An area of outstanding, picturesque beauty it really is. We explored here today for the first time and could of easily spent the whole day there. Beautiful beach and fantastic forest walks, perfect for a pooch that LOVES both! A great play park for children as well, which both of mine thoroughly enjoyed. There is a designated BBQ area as well! We enjoyed some crepes, chips and cold & hot drinks at the 'Salt and Pine' food stand they have on site. Very friendly staff, cooked fresh to order and very clean. Wonderful place, and we can't to visit again!!

We visited the nature reserve on a whim and had a fab time. We loved the red squirrels who came really quite close to the hide for photos 👍

Are you able to pitch a tent near the dunes and leave your car in carpark overnight?

Unsure about that. Best contact Forestry Commission, Scotland who have the car park at Kinshaldy.
Alternative solution would be to park free at Tayport near to the football ground and walk along to the sands. Pitching a tent at Tentsmuir point wouldn’t be an option though as its a nature reserve with many ground nesting wild birds at the moment
