There are no clear signs. The way to the top means you have to bash the bushes and make your own way as there are no clear marked paths. Views ok.

Really enjoyed the walk along the winding path. Estimated to take 15 minutes, took us 1 hour. We stopped to enjoy the seascapes and views. Highly recommend.
Steep, wear closed toe shoes, stop and enjoy the views and most importantly, on the way back, take a stroll along the beach.

Did the circular route of Barrenjoey Lighthouse ... up the stairs, around the top and down the sloping path - very popular but a lovely destination

The walk up to Barrenjoey Lighthouse is a pleasure at any time of year, though after three visits now I think I prefer it in winter when the air is clean and crisp and the views up and down the coast are less likely to be hazy (actually, more like sublime). There are two routes to the top, one a bit gentler along a very well made track that is almost roadworthy and the other (the Smugglers track) much steeper and definitely more of a 'track'. One our last visit went up via the gentler track and down via the Smugglers. There had been some recent rain and the latter was quite slippery in parts - a walking pole definitely came in handy at those points. There is a bit of exploration to do in the vicinity of the lighthouse. I haven't been in the lighthouse but I understand it is open to visitors on Sundays only, though you also must book a tour with NSW National Parks.

We caught the 199 bus from Manly (journey time approx 1hr 15mins) and got off at the entrance to Governor Philip Park. From there you can walk through the centre of the Park, where there is also a car park, or along the beach to one of the two ascent routes.
We opted for the easier winding path route rather than the Smugglers steps option. There are spectacular views over Pittwater Bay and Palm Beach and the climb is relatively easy.
Some interesting wildlife including a range of gekhos, flowers and butterflies en route amongst the sandstone boulders. The lighthouse itself is heritage listed and there also the keepers cottages which can be visited at scheduled times.

It looks just like the pictures - except so much better with your own eyes! We went on a Tuesday and it wasn't too crowded. We ate lunch at The Boathouse then took the stair route up to the top to Barrenjoey Lighthouse. Temperature was low 80's and a nice breeze. While it is a bit strenuous after so many steps, it wasn't unbearable for us ages 1, 18, 31, 39, 47, 66 and 67. Watch for wildlife along the way. Saw Kookaburras, lizards, a friendly mouse and lots of beautiful wildflowers. I would imaging it would be a bit slippery if it had just rained.
We took the sloping path coming back down. It was moderately easy being down hill, but it's using different muscles, so we took it easy. Along the path down, listen for the spot where the ocean is to your left and there is a large rock to your right. You can hear the ocean reflecting from the rock and it sounds kind of like a jet engine or an AC unit :) Really cool to walk back and forth. That's nature for you!

Located at Barrenjoey Headland of Palm Beach in Sydney's Northern Beaches, Barrenjoey Lighthouse is a well-known heritage listed landmark in the region. Overlooking the South Pacific Ocean, Broken Bay, Pittwater and Palm beach, Barrenjoey Lighthouse is a wonderful destination for tourists and locals alike. A short climbing towards the hill top from Palm Beach, where you may park your cars, or get off the buses, you would be very much excited with the stunning views and pleased with your efforts. As a Sydneysider, I have been there many times acting as a "Tour Guide" for visiting family members and friends.
How to get there?
1st: Drive to Palm Beach. There are plenty parking spaces available.
2nd. Public Transport: BUS 199 or L90 To Palm Beach.
The Access to the hill top is on the Pittwater side of Barrenjoey Head.
I am uploading two photos as introduction.

It's a slightly challenging climb up to Barrenjoey lighthouse from the parking area at Governor Phillip Park in Palm Beach. However it's not out of reach for fit retirees and really something you shouldn't miss. On the climb you pass natural vegetation and possibly wildlife along the way and there's the historic lighthouse and keeper's cottage to see at the top. The stunning views from the top look over Pittwater and the Pacific Ocean. I suggest taking the stairs up and the winding path down. Take water, put on your sunscreen and hat and take the best selfies ever with a picturesque backdrop. After the climb refresh yourself at one of the scenic cafes and restaurants nearby. Don't forget, this is the area known as Summer Bay in the TV series Home and Away. Who knows, you might be there when they are filming!!
