Well, I have no connection whatsoever to Devon, but I happened to be there and when a local museum is open, I invariably pop inside. I learnt a great deal, that's for sure.
There is an awful lot to see and read. The displays on Arctic exploration and emigration to Australia were very interesting. There are numerous models of ships and stories involving sailors, ranging from the 1600s to the end of the last century. The daily lives of seafaring folk and lighthouse keepers are explained in great detail. I also learnt about notorious shipwrecks from days gone by.
As it happens, I have read Westward Ho!. I thought that book long-winded, tawdry and moralising, but it was clearly a bestseller in its day; one particular display cabinet in the museum provides more information on the novel's erstwhile importance in kindling tourism to the local area.
The North Devon Maritime Museum is a highly enjoyable place to visit, stuffed with a great many artefacts for your entertainment and edification.

Lovely welcoming staff and were especially kind to my little boy. There was so much information to take in but at the same time fascinating even if you aren't from the North Devon area.

I don’t usually do Trip Advisor reviews but I’ve made an exception because the reviews for this place put me off, and they really shouldn’t have done. It was brilliant!
The two blokes in charge know their stuff and the info boards are packed with the stories you really want: king Hubba and his sad-cartoon-raven, a story in which Ivan the terrible is weirdly the goodie, suspected cannibals, a traverse board designed to be used by illiterate sailors, ‘the worst politician there ever was’ (this is according to one of the blokes. It’s a bold claim but he’s definitely a wrong’un), a bloke executed for forging the ace of spades, a woman accused of being drunk and attacking people with a ladle etc. This is all just in the first room.
For your kids (or, in my case, teenagers), there are knots to tie, buttons to press and a bell that they are encouraged to ding as loudly as they can. There’s also a yard at the back with one of those put-your-head-in-the-hole pictures and a thing throughout the museum where if you find twelve pirates you get a prize (daughter found eleven and they were mercifully lenient).
Between the different rooms you’ve got history of Maritime in Devon, smuggling, navigating, ship building, rope making, D-Day (read about Bruce and Betty. It is worth it. ), the lifeboats, Westward Ho!, the history of toilets, the St George’s Day Raid and more.
Yes, folk are right when they say it is small. However, it is absolutely packed full. It’s good value.

Fantastic afternoon trip in Appledore! Staff friendly, attentive and couldn't do enough for you. The history itself was in-depth and extensively local to the area; it covered bases ranging from Appledore's ship-building history to those who served in the Wars. Plenty of items and even interactive stations to have a go at activities including rope-tying to get a feel of what maritime work was like in the area!
Dogs are welcome- mine was even offered a treat on arrival which I know made her day! Would strongly recommend if anyone is a history-buff or even just interested in the past of this lovely place.

Love this museum-we have a 9yr old and 13yr old who enjoyed the displays. Quiz for younger children. Displays with working models. Run by volunteers who are very knowledgeable and engaging. This was our second visit to the museum and we left having learnt more-particularly about the role of North Devon beaches in the D-Day preparations. Worth a visit!

A fascinating museum with lots of history, artefacts and models. An absolute must if you're a tourist in the area. We Brits are used to free entry to museums but the entry fee (shown on their website) shouldn't put anyone off, this museum is exceptional value for money

Lovely museum, so informative with plenty of photos and tools on display. Very clearly laid out as you progress through the house. Lovely staff, very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Parking right opposite which was a bonus. Would thoroughly recommend this museum.

I would say this museum is not wheelchair or scooter friendly as it is on 2 floors (no lifts) and the door widths would not be big enough. I can't remember if if there are steps up to the entrance or not.

Is our friendly and well behaved Westie dog welcome?
كُتب بتاريخ 15 أكتوبر 2016
Dogs are welcomed at the museum, they can acompany their owners, be tied up in the garden if required,
