Who goes to Iceland must be aware that you walk a lot. Many attractions are near the highway, but others are far away. Hengifoss is the country's third largest waterfall. The walk to it is relatively easy, although a bit steep, but the beautiful landscape makes it worth going there.

This was a planned visit on our ring road trip. About a twenty minute drive off route 1 and usual 1000 isk parking fee along with well maintained toilets. The whole experience of this waterfall exceeded our expectations as the area is absolutely stunning. The hike up to Hengifoss starts off steep and although doesn't look too far from the bottom, the hike just keeps going and going. Incredible photo opportunities all the way up of the views, the Basalt columns, the falls and the majestic Hengifoss at the top. Once at the end there is a well maintained board walk with large statement boulders which fell from he canyon in the spring of 2021 and left to remind us that nature is ever changing. Cross over the bridge on the way down to get alternative views from the opposite side. There was also a food truck at the bottom for refreshments.

The return hike to see Hengifoss and Litlanesfoss was definitely worth the 2 hours, 15 minutes round trip, with lots of breaks and stopping fort pictures. The incline is a bit of a challenge, and as you think you're at the end, there is more to go still. Once at the top, you have to go further of course to see the picturesque Litlanesfoss. I am always about "good bang for buck" when it comes to effort and reward, and the higher than normal effort here yields a fantastic reward (weather permitting of course). Some useful tips include ensuring you have waterproof shoes/gear when traversing through the upper parts where you have to go through some wet areas. Hiking poles will help ease the burden some, both going up and down the slope, as well as through the water. Bring snacks and water as there are few amenities there (construction at the base when we went). Be sure to wear sunscreen with sunny conditions as there is zero shade. And finally, be sure to budget the time to experience the full hike, as well as the time to get to/from the main road. Parking can get busy there, but there was no cost to us. If you found this information helpful, please kindly consider giving a thumbs up!

After a long, steep walk, we reached the end. We didn't know where the waterfall was; all we could see was fog. Some people were waiting for the fog to disappear. We waited for about 15 minutes and then left.

The waterfall is perhaps 5 star, the problem is that after a steep 45 minute climb you don't get close enough to enjoy it well.
The canyon is amazing with beautiful basalt columns and the beautiful red streaks, I presume ferrous, of the fall amphitheater.
Even the descent is tiring.
In short, it is not unmissable.

I had to really summon up the will to hike this after a long drive from the south coast in & out of the Eastfjords before driving on to my accommodation in Seydisfjordur. I’m glad I did. I really wanted to see this striped waterfall. It’s a steep uphill hike but thankfully not too long at just over a mile each way. You can actually see the top half of the waterfall from the start of the hike. You have the option of taking the left or right hand paths up (facing Hengifoss), if you take the right hand one, you will have to cross the bridge further up to cross over to the left hand track. I went up the left hand side then coming down I crossed the bridge to come down the rest of the way on the other side. There are WC facilities here (though no running water as at Sept 2023). They are upgrading the visitor facilities. There is the Hengifoss Snack Van available also. On the day I visited it was windy so the water was getting blown around a bit instead of falling steadily down. You also have the bonus of Litlanesfoss & it’s basalt columns half way up.

Demanding climb (about 2.5 km) to see very special basalt formations and colors (a beautiful garnet red). It doesn't reach the top 5 but it does reach the top 10.

South of Hallormsstadur (8 km) you will find the car park (free) that goes up to the waterfalls. Climbing the path from the left side, first you will find the Litlanesfoss and then continuing the ascent, at the top the waterfalls await you with their red, orange and black striped rock amphitheater.
the path reaches under the waterfall. turning first, you can instead cross the wooden bridge and go down the other side of the gorge.
For the return journey, consider 3 hours going slowly.

Ciao,

I plan to visit Iceland in July. What is the best time of day to visit Hengifoss Waterfall? I want to photograph the falls but don't want to have harsh shadows on the rocks. When would the best sun be and when might it be completely in the shadows.

With Iceland’s Weather it’s never predictable. From our experience, you need to take time and spend there at least couple of hours, the weather might change any moment and you need to have your camera ready.
We were first part of the day and when we came it was very cloudy but in an hour the sun came out and we got so many nice pictures! The waterfall is beautiful in any lighting!

The nearest road is bitumen, so yes, you will be able to get there in a 2WD. From the parking area to the waterfall is a 45 minute walk, up hill.

We will be going to Iceland the first weeks of March 2017. Will there still be a lot of snow here during that time of year? Are the road pretty safe to drive or really icy normally in March?
كُتب بتاريخ 7 ديسمبر 2016
Locals recommend tourists not driving in winter/ dark months. I'm not sure regarding what the weather conditions will be in march. We visited in July.
