Fascinating guided tour around the house which is higgledy-piggledy with bits added on. Lovely examples of period furniture and books.

An Arts and Crafts gem of a property. Guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. Beautiful gardens to stroll round at your leisure or you can book a guided tour of the gardens too. Small cafe for teas and coffees, cake and ice cream. A real time capsule with stunning hand crafted furniture.

A quaint rural spot just south of Loughborough. There is a tumbledown cottage set among a four acre garden and the site had a slightly Alice in Wonderland feel about it. There is also a vegetable and herb garden and an adjacent circular trail among 11 acres of woodland. The Café served excellent coffee and cakes (very recommended).

We pre booked for the 10:30 arrival slot and arrived in the car park at 10:20. The driver of the shuttle bus was there to greet us and 6 other guests. On arrival at the house a few minutes later we were given the option of a house tour at 11:00 which we took. We were able to briefly join the garden tour which was really interesting and in hind sight we would have completed that, which takes 45 mins and joined a later house tour, which was an available option. It was a beautiful day to see the garden and woodlands. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit which was very much enhanced by the enthusiasm and knowledge of the NT guides on site. Allow at least 2 hours, weather permitting, to do this justice.

A small but perfectly formed property. From shuttle ride, to welcome volunteers and house guide all were friendly and helpful. We were so glad we opted to do the guided tour as this gave us a good background to the story of the house and furniture.
The tea room was small but lovely and the scones were delicious!

Situated a 2 miles drive from the M1 junction 22 is this hidden gem of a National trust property.
The sat nav directs you to the car park where you are picked up by a shuttle bus and dropped off roughly a quarter of a mile away by a very friendly driver(Brian today).
There immediately as you leave is a lovely little tearoom and toilets, toilets were clean and the tearoom served a beautiful cream tea.... £7.40 per person.
From there the house, which today was open from 12.30 to 13.30 for people not taking a tour... Us!
We walked through the woodland and continued to the house which was on 3 floors but seven levels.... At the top level we looked out onto ground level..... If that makes sense.
The house had some of the most narrowest stairs I've ever squeezed myself up.... But a stocky chap like myself managed with help from the rope banister.
It was lovely to visit a house which reminded me of my great grandparents 17th century cottage they owned in Northamptonshire.... Beautiful.
The gardens were very colourful and were full of shrubs.
The visit, with a visit to the tearoom took us about 75 minutes..... The staff were the best we have met yet.....
Recommended. Visited 29th June 2024.

This was a real hidden gem .Visited on the way home from Bosworth Battlefield, as I'm a big William Morris fan,so the Arts & Crafts angle attracted my attention. It doesn't have the big National Trust shop attached but is well worth a visit.
Beautiful buildings, and I've never seen such colour in a garden in April. It was a delight, a photographer's dream. Inside , it is so quirky and for once, the National Trust haven't quashed its individuality. I loved it and will recommend it to everyone I come in contact with.

A paradise hidden away remarkably close to the mundane world. Take a pack lunch and go on a summers day , you won't regret it.

I've visited this beautiful National Trust property many times and it never disappoints. A quirky Arts and Crafts cottage nestled in the hillside, there are tours with friendly and extremely knowledgeable guides. Its surrounded by stunning gardens and a small woodland giving plenty of places to explore. Garden tours are available too and equally engaging. The tea room (with second hand books for sale) is now open again which is a bonus.
You book a 30 mins timeslot to arrive and get a minibus from the carpark. Everyone is so friendly and helpful.

Does the cafe get very busy at lunch as would like to stay for a bite to eat on a Sunday?
كُتب بتاريخ 23 يناير 2023
Hi,
I wasn't aware that refreshments were available at this venue. However, there is a pub reasonably nearby called The Copt Oak, Markfield, LE67 9QB that opens pretty much all day I believe. There is also the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation charity , Ulverscroft Grange, Copt Oak, LE67 9QB that also serves food, but I doubt they open on a Sunday. Hope this helps.

I would suggest that you phone beforehand as the paths are up and down and a lot of effort may be required to push/pull a wheelchair about. The house is built into the side of a steep hill and floors are on different levels. The mini-bus will drop you off and there are toilets at this point BUT no others, there is also a cafe but a short climb to get to it. It will be difficult but if you live near go yourself beforehand and recce the whole site. I personally would have reservations!

Quite near ... at the ticket office and cafe area, which is about a 5/10 minute walk away, down/up a slope. None in house.
A great place to visit altogether.

A bit late, but better than never. You can visit as a non-member but need to boo ahead for the tours, which are very interresting.

Is this a suitable place for a 2 year old toddler to visit?
كُتب بتاريخ 12 نوفمبر 2017
If there are two of you taking the toddler you could book back to back tours so that one could go in while the other takes the toddler around the grounds and into the coffee shop / plays with their own toys. The one who has visited could also decide whether the toddler would be entertained by visiting the house. The tour takes about 45 minutes but do be aware that you have to get the minibus to it and can't just go back to your car. I visited with my seven year old niece who loved it so I don't agree with the teenager comment!
