What a fab afternoon exploring this hidden gem of a place set in beautiful Charnwood Forest.
National Trust volunteers were friendly and welcoming. Our guided tour of the house was interesting and insightful.
We enjoyed a cuppa in the gardens afterwards and watched the birds feeding. ☺️
A peaceful haven to explore and enjoy.

We live 'on the doorstep' and it has taken us 8 years to visit. However, it is well worth doing so if you have an interest in arts and crafts. Gimson was a self-made man. The area of Charnwood Forest is fabulous for walking and you can spend an hour or two here, then move on to another NT place in the afternoon, such as Calke Abbey for instance.

By National Trust standards the quirky delights of Stoneywell is a modern dwelling, built in the very late Victorian era and with the last ocupant still alive, so it lacks the historical heft and narratives that spring from the bulwarks of other properties.
But for all its lack of ancient pasts, it still does have a good story to tell with characters to match, particularly in relation to its arts and crafts origins, which the guides brought to life with guile, passion, knowledge and great elucidation, so we departed knowing everything there was to seemingly to know about this interesting and offbeat abode.
The woodland that flourishes in encirclement around the house is luscious and worthy of a quick trip through all its natures too.

First visit for a few years. I took my 6 year old grand daughter and I was a bit concerned that she'd be bored but she really enjoyed the quirky nature of the house. It helped that the guide made an effort to involve her.
Shame that the tea room hasn't reopened but they did say that it is intended to reopen at some time in the near future.
A very interesting visit.

Stoneywell is one of the National Trust's smaller properties but it is packed full of character. It has an interesting family history who loved the Arts and Crafts movement, so eveident in its quirkiness both inside and out. Tucked away in the countryside you are met by a friendly member of staff in a large carpark where you are then taken to the property in a mini bus. The building itself is fabulous and is full of period furniture, furnishings and family items. There are peaceful gardens and grounds to wonder around. The staff here are friendly and very knowledgeable. Admission to Stoneywell is by bookings only on the National Trust website.

Having been to Stoneywell several times before, we knew to book and where the carpark was in order to get the minibus to the house and grounds. It didn’t seem very well signposted. However, all the volunteers were extremely helpful and knowledgable. We had a lovely walk around the gardens, which always has something in flower. Our only disappointment was that the cafe hadn’t reopened since Covid. Having been to several other National Trust properties whose cafes were open, we hadn’t thought to check this. Take a flask if you want a drink.

The booking system on the National Trust website was very confusing. Booked for a 10.30 slot but nothing happened at this time. Arrived after short mini bus trip. Lady who welcomed us offered us a 11am house tour, again not 10.30. She had a very quiet voice and although we were standing very close and have good hearing, missed a lot of the information. She also didn’t wait while the mini bus left which was also noisy so more information missed. A house tour is essential as , on your own, it would takeabout10 minutes but with an informed guide, it took 40 minutes. Walking the grounds and the forest is also a must do. Lovely small Arts and Crafts house.

A realtively small NT property and tucked away in the countryside, but well worth seeking out. It is a unique Arts and Crafts house which we felt was also rather Gaudi0sque as it seems to grow out of the hillside.
It's a short tour, but really interesting

We had an interesting and very enjoyable time at Stoneywell. The guides were very knowledgeable.
The only negative to the visit was the lack of a basic tea room!

Does the cafe get very busy at lunch as would like to stay for a bite to eat on a Sunday?

Hi,
I wasn't aware that refreshments were available at this venue. However, there is a pub reasonably nearby called The Copt Oak, Markfield, LE67 9QB that opens pretty much all day I believe. There is also the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation charity , Ulverscroft Grange, Copt Oak, LE67 9QB that also serves food, but I doubt they open on a Sunday. Hope this helps.

Is it suitable for wheelchair users
Malcolm G
ليستر, UK180 مساهمة
I would suggest that you phone beforehand as the paths are up and down and a lot of effort may be required to push/pull a wheelchair about. The house is built into the side of a steep hill and floors are on different levels. The mini-bus will drop you off and there are toilets at this point BUT no others, there is also a cafe but a short climb to get to it. It will be difficult but if you live near go yourself beforehand and recce the whole site. I personally would have reservations!
Are there toilet facilities near the house

Quite near ... at the ticket office and cafe area, which is about a 5/10 minute walk away, down/up a slope. None in house.
A great place to visit altogether.
Can we just come to visit ,or do we have to call & book ourselfs an hour?

Due to its small size all visitors to Stoneywell, including members of the National Trust, need to book in advance.

Dogs are not allowed for health and safety reasons as you have to go by mini bus from the car park to stoneywell, there is no entry by foot.

A bit late, but better than never. You can visit as a non-member but need to boo ahead for the tours, which are very interresting.

Is this a suitable place for a 2 year old toddler to visit?
Carolyn R
York, UK46 مساهمة
If there are two of you taking the toddler you could book back to back tours so that one could go in while the other takes the toddler around the grounds and into the coffee shop / plays with their own toys. The one who has visited could also decide whether the toddler would be entertained by visiting the house. The tour takes about 45 minutes but do be aware that you have to get the minibus to it and can't just go back to your car. I visited with my seven year old niece who loved it so I don't agree with the teenager comment!
