Was trying to do a review for both Ginga and Ryusei waterfall but noted that Sounkyo Gorge just nice covered both plus surrounding area!
Our first itinerary for Day 2, reaching early about 8.15am and has the whole place to us… happy! Ginga and Ryusei Waterfalls are located in the Sounkyo Gorge and the name Ginga no Taki translates to “Milky Way Waterfall” and Ryusei no Taki means “Shooting Star Waterfall.”. One of the scenic spots in Daisetsuzan National Park they are a pair of waterfalls that is divided by a huge rock formation protruding from the cliff, and flowing down closely to each other. The Ginga Waterfall (Ginga-no-taki銀河の滝) and Ryusei Waterfall (Ryusei-no-taki 流星の滝];) forms yet another set of twin Japanese waterfalls in the country. The water source for both of these waterfalls comes from Mount Daisetsu at the background.
Dynamic water falls from 90m high cliff to form the Ryuseia fall while the Ginga fall flows more elegantly but at a higher altitude more than 100m above. There are hiking trails that allow you to view the falls separately but we do not have the time/luxury to venture deeper due to tight schedule. But do watch out for the river flow amid the trees and rocks, equally paramount scenic for all!
Each year, many tourists come to see the autumnal foliage in the area. Where our coach parked there is a store, and near the store (nearer the Ginga Falls). WE have more than 30 mins admiring the wonderful scene, photos taking before moving off to Mt Kuradake. 😊

黒岳ロープウェー・ペアリフトで紅葉を堪能してから層雲峡温泉のホテルに1泊し、翌日に流星の滝・銀河の滝などを観光しました。石狩川の清流や切り立った崖がつくりだすダイナミックな景観は見事です。さらに、紅葉シーズンだったので見どころ満載でした。

7月25日（月）ツアーで訪問しました。前夜は層雲峡温泉に宿泊し、朝いちばんで黒岳へ。ロープウェイで5合目まで行き、雲海を見ました。そして下山して、ここへ。高さ100m以上の柱状節理の断崖が14kｍも続き、素晴らしいです。

氷瀑祭り開催期間中の２月下旬に層雲峡を訪問しました。ホテル大雪に宿泊したのですが大浴場からの壮大な雪景色は素晴らしかったです。温まりながらマイナス１０度の空気を体感することができ身も心も温まりました。
ライトアップされた氷のオブジェが見学できる氷瀑祭りも印象的でした。花火も綺麗で非現実的な世界を堪能できたのですが、寒くて３０～４０分ほどしか滞在できませんでした。日本とは思えない極寒と幻想的な景色をたっぷり体験できました。

No need to come here if your itinerary is tight. Weather was bad in Oct and ropeway was closed. So it depends on your luck. Walked from Mt View Hotel to the 2 waterfalls and continued to Obako by walking. From waterfall to Obako, it was through tunnel which was dusty and polluted. The highlight of stay was visit to
Ginsendai which bus too, will be cancel if weather is bad. The woman maning the Tourist Information, her attitude toward Japanese and foreigners differs. You know what I mean. It was obvious.
Ginsendai was still covered in snow so be prepared with hiking poles, gaiters, crampons and waterproof attair. Bring packed lunch and enough water for the day. We didn't manage to see the full Autumn colors though it was mid Oct. We were unlucky. By the way, food around Sounkyo is not great. Wouldn't want to visit again.

大自然の不可思議さを体感できる必見のスポットだと思います。秋の紅葉だけでなく新緑も素晴らしいと想像されます。

上川町のＨＰで紅葉に関する情報をもう少し細やかに発表してくれると良いと思います。なを、今年は遅れているようです。平日だったせいかロープウェイ下の商店は殆ど閉まっていました。層雲峡自体は滝も山も素晴らしく、帰りは上川町で有名な草餅も買えました。

豊かな自然に囲まれた層雲峡。この夏はコロナのため、とても静かでした。北海道観光には外せない場所のひとつだと思います。

今はすでに廃れてしまっているようで、観るべきところが多い北海道で、わざわざ訪れる必要があるのかどうかはさておき、行ったら行ったで楽しいスポット。
個人的には紅葉の滝がベスト。その次がロープウェーとリフト。山登りはしてないので知らないけど、たぶん素晴らしいと思われます。

Hi there,
We will be in Hokkaido this December and going on a road trip. We really want to see Daisetsuzan NP and do at least 1 scenic hike but only have a couple of days. Sounkyo Gorge sounds really nice so we are considering heading there. We are just wondering if it is an actual hiking trail through the gorge to see all the waterfalls, or if the walk is along the road? Also, can anyone please tell me the distance of the hike return from Sounkyo hot springs?
Any help on the area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Will be in Hokkaido from 8 - 16 August 2017. On the 3rd day, plan to drive from Sapporo Station to Furano, then to Biei, and then spend a night in Asahikawa. Next morning, visit Asahiyawa Zoo, then proceed to Sounkyo Gorge. Explore Daisetsuzan National Park. Drive back to Sapporo Station.

I would like to visit this place in early May. Is it good during that time? Is this place accessible by JR train? I would like to go there by JR train.

I flew to sapporo and then drove there - there was still a fair bit of snow on the hiking tracks during July, so I'd expect it to be quite frozen in May. You may be able to hike it if you had full snow hiking gear.

Hi there! I am planning to visit Sounkyo on Dec. 27, 2016 to see the 2 waterfalls. What other sights in the area would you recommend during that time?
Will be staying at JR Inn Asahikawa for 1 night, How do we get to Sounkyo Gorge, Ryusei no Taki Falls & Ginga no Taki Falls. Is there a train or bus the gets there directly. In case there is no bus, can you recommend a car transfer service.

I am planning to visit Sounkyo in late July 2016 to see the 2 waterfalls. What other sights in the area would you recommend during that time?
I might be staying 1 night at one of the resort hotels there, preferably one with an onsen. Any recommendations? Also, if I take the public bus from Asahikawa, will it be a long walk to the hotel area?
Also, I will not be driving, so how can I get from the hotel to the gorge and the waterfalls? Is it within walking distance? If so, how far is it, and is it a difficult walk (e.g., rough terrain, a lot of up and downs, etc)? Alternatively, I am considering hiring a local taxi for about an hour or 2 to bring us to the various sights. Would this be difficult to do, and roughly how much would it cost?
