Whilst unable to get the tour tickets which are done by lottery I was able to secure a tasting visit. The distillery is very easy to get to by train and an easy 10 minute walk. There is a small museum recounting the history of Suntory which is well done. Then onto the tasting. One is only able to purchase 3 tastings per person so choose wisely. The price was adequate for high end whiskies. There is ample space to stand around high top tables and enjoy the tastings in a leisurely manner. Unfortunately, there is not much to purchase. We did purchase a lovely Suntory tumbler and a very small bottle of one whisky that they were selling, otherwise it is just what is available to taste. My husband loved this side trip from Kyoto and it is well worth the hassle of trying for the tour in the lottery.

We absolutely loved our visit! We unfortunately weren't able to win tickets through the lottery despite putting in for all possible dates but were able to snag the first come first served tickets that opened the month before. We got the 30 minute self guided tour and it was so well done! The museum part is well curated and had tons of interesting information and the tasting (while extra cost) was so worthwhile and affordable compared to trying these whiskeys elsewhere!

Wow, what a great experience tasting whiskeys at Suntory Yamazaki Distillery! We weren't able to book the full tour but we did get reservations to visit the small museum and tasting lounge. The staff was amazing and so friendly in providing suggestions and explaining the process. We were able to taste many very high-end whiskeys from Suntory at a very reasonable price. It's unfortunate that you can't buy any (I'm not sure if that will eventually change) but hey, just tasting them was a very cool experience.

By chance, I had the opportunity to take a factory tour, and was able to participate during the good time of winter. After a tour of the factory and an explanation session, there was a tasting session and a tour of the shop!
The whole tour took about 2 hours.
Inside the factory, the smell of fermenting whiskey was overwhelming, and in summer some people would get drunk just from the smell.
The tasting session was also offered at a low price, so it was a fun event that we could enjoy to our heart's content.
Full bottles of popular brands such as Yamazaki were in short supply and sold out!
We were barely able to purchase a souvenir of a mini bottle and a snack set, limited to two bottles per person.
It was a factory tour that made me want to go again.
The whole tour took about 2 hours.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of this distillery, and everything from the entrance to the exhibits has been renewed, making it a place full of things to see. We were also able to sample some precious unblended sake, which we thoroughly enjoyed!

야마자키 증류소에서 유료/무료로 투어가 가능 무료 투어 시 간단하게 증류소의 역사와 제품관람 후 유료시식과 기념품샵을 방문할 수있음.
유료시음도 여러가지를 맛볼 수 있음 (1인 3잔)
다만 공사중이여서 어수선한부분이 있음.
유료투어는 해보지 않았으나, 건물 크기로 보아 다채롭지는 않았을 것이라고 예상함. 증류소의 역사와 전통을 보일 수 있는 프로그램을 늘린다면 더욱 좋을 것 같음

Amazing experience! It's super hard to get the reservation, but it is worthwhile. You will be amazed with the museum and history of suntory Whiskey. The tasting selection is great at a very reasonable cost. The only negative thing is that you can not buy limited whiskeys. In the gift store, they only offer 2 choices, and you get to stick with that.

Recently reopened post-COVID however they are now 100 percent reservation only. All walk-ins are refused. You can get tickets online however it is super hard to get. You must get online a month or so before and watch how the tickets get released.
The tour is now self-tour - no more guided tours. Covid simplification. The only access you get is their museum and the highlight is the tasting room.
The tasting room has tables but no chairs (COVID protocol) unless you go outside. It was fairly cold the day we went but it was worth getting a table and chair.
The premium brands are 800 yen per glass, (Hibiki 21 year) They also have some distillery specials which are 300 yen per glass.
You are allowed to purchase 3 drinks per person.
At the gift shop, you can purchase some distillery-only items. Tasting bottles of Yamasaki for under 2,000 yen. A nice gift.
I want to go again AFTER all the COVID protocols are rescinded.
Hopefully, the next time, the actual distillery will be open for a tour.

なので 大阪梅田11:15発の阪急電車の準急で 大山崎駅に向かったわ～
閑散とした大山崎駅から 狭い道を歩くこと約10分
JRの踏切を渡って サントリー山崎蒸留所に到着よ
時刻は12:00ちょうど
受付のおねーさんにお声かけし 1000円をAMEXでお支払い！
集合時間までは 山崎ウイスキー館の見学が許されて 日本のウイスキーの歩みなどを 展示物などで理解を深めたり ショップでグッズなどを買ったりしたわ～
時刻になり 案内係に従ってツアーの開始です！
詳しく記しちゃうと つまらなくなっちゃうから 記さないけど 製造の工程などを見学し 最後に試飲だったわよ

この頃は とっても品薄で 値段も高くなっているけど このツアーに参加したら いま一生懸命作っていることも 熟成しないと世に出せないことも いろいろとその難しい状況を正しく理解出来たわ～
単なる年数の違い(熟成度合い)の シングルモルトウイスキーが出来上がるのかと思っていたけど いろんな作り方があってこそ 多様で個性豊かななウイスキーになるのね！
それがまた アタシたちに シングルモルトウイスキーの楽しみ方を与えてくれているって感じたわ～
不思議と驚きでいっぱいだし 感動も味わえて とっても有意義な時間を過ごせてよかったわよ！

The way to reach is Yamazaki is just beautiful We landed up by train, and the distillery has a huge collection of Suntory brands. there is a tasting facility you can choose to taste your own favorite Japanese Whisky

Did you take a train in from Tokyo. I have the JR rail pass, I'm trying to time it to do the first tour.

You would need to get the Shinkansen (bullet train)to Kyoto from Tokyo and then change to the local Tokaido-Sanyo Line in Kyoto to then get to Yamazaki Station. Only a short walk from there! Not sure what time your earliest Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto would leave, but we caught one headed that way from Odawara (Hakone area) at 6:15am one of our days.

I believe going into the museum area & gift shop would be OK for a 16 year old. I don't know about the tasting room. I suggest go to the Yamazaki Distillery website & ask via email. I tried to make reservations through their website with little success. Someone in our group who is from Osaka, called & was able to make reservations for our group of 7 adults. My conclusion, having a local call helps. If you are staying at a hotel that offers good service, have one of the staff call for you as as last minute option. reservations.

Besides the coin lockers at the distillery reception desk, the ever-pleasant and polite reception staff may keep any large luggage inside the reception area for you.

Will be able to taste some whiskies or to browse the gift shop if I have made no reservation for the tours or the museum? Our cruise is heading back to Kobe because of the typhoon that is coming, and I will gladly head to Yamazaki Distillery if I can enjoy myself there without any reservation. Thank you in advance!

You can turn up without a reservation to visit the museum, gift shop and whisky tasting. The museum is free, the whisky tasting is according to the number of whiskies you taste. Budget for JPY 1500. Cash only for the whisky tasting!
