Love the Hawaii vibes in this little island. A lot of hidden gems you can find when driving around. - @dlozano915

I biked around the whole island from Iwakuni about 100 miles and enjoyed every minute of my trip to Oshima. There is a road that circles the entire island, I prefer the southern side. There are gorgeous views of the ocean and small fishing villages worth exploring. I noticed a lot of restaurants and cafes don't open until at least 11 am, so plan for that. I rode around the last day of November and the temperatures were on the cooler side mainly because of the winds. Right when you cross the bridge onto the island there is a mountain with an observatory deck that is worth it for the views. There are nice beaches along the island and a few museums, I will have to visit next time. Oshima is also famous for their oranges, so if you get a chance to try them, well worth it! What a fantastic island!

Some recent and serious ancestry research revealed that my grandfather emigrated to Hawaii from Yamaguchi province, Kuga township (which is now part of Suo Oshima), Japan. Food was scarce and he left to work under contract for the Alexander Baldwin sugar plantation around 1900.
With very little other information about his home town, and no Japanese language skill, I wondered how to go about doing on-the-ground research on Suo Oshima. Then I saw a review on trip advisor about the guide/research/translator services offered by Tetsyo (Tony) Shinohara. I got in touch with him by email and hired him immediately. Tony also works for the Tourist Bureau on the island but is serious in developing his own specialty in helping overseas Japanese find their ancestor roots on the island.
Day one, we hit the ground running. We stopped at the Cultural Center to see how much of Hawaii has been transplanted back to Japan. We spent a long time at City Hall, plumbing their records for signs of my grandfather and found the original copy of their koseki tohon in Japanese. With the help of Tony and staff, we were able to glean more details of his life from it. We ended up visiting 2 Buddhist temples looking for any signs of him...and in the last one, we hit gold. We found his name and names of his family in a 200 year old hand-written volume of death records. The priest and Tony spent a long time explaining the Japanese text to us. I was able to pay respect to my ancestors by burning some incense and praying to the statue of buddha that they surely prayed to ...as it was over 500 years old!
The next day was spent in large part at the Museum of Immigration to Hawaii, looking at their fine exhibits and exploring their impressive data base. Plantation records in Hawaii have largely been lost to fire and rot, but here in Japan of all places, they had records of employment on every Japanese immigrant in the plantations.
It was a fruitful two days on Suo Oshima and we could not have done any of it without Tony's able knowledge of the island, his translation skills, and his sincere interest in doing the research!! Can't recommend him highly enough! Thanks Tony!

Though our time on the island was too short to enjoy the beaches, we did cherish our stays at the two B&B's that Tony booked for us. The Chirodi Ryokan right near the water had a nice furo and lovely food -using the fresh seafood of the region. The Ishinabetei was a stunning home overlooking gardens and rice fields and ocean. It's hosts are gourmet cooks that make everything from scratch and serve regional specialties, as well. We got a good feel for the bounty of fruit and vegetables that grow on this semi tropical island, as well as the bounty of fish and shellfish in the surrounding sea.
Discovered that my grandfather left Suo Oshima for another similar island paradise in Hawaii!

How do you get from Yanai to suooshima island?

Tacoma,
We were driven to Suo Oshima, so driving over the bridge is easy. You then have transportation around the island. An alternative is to take the ferry. I know of the ferry but not the details. It would be a nice ride on the water.
What does taxi cost from obatake station to the museum of emigration to hawaii. Is that taxi the best way to go to museum?

I'm Tony Shinohara based in Suo Oshima Tourism Association. It will be JPY 1,500 by taxi. If you visit here just for this purpose, taxi is the best way. If you are interested in other place to visit, please gmail me at tony8914shinohara. I can send you the slides with some pictures of landscapes and shops in the island.

Does a local bus stop near Katazoegahama Beach Park?
Tetsuo S
Yes, there is. But it is very limited convenience like every three hours. If you stay Sunshine Sazanseto, a resort hotel here, you can use their shuttle bus between Obatake station and the hotel located Katazoe Beach.
If you need more info, please email me to tony8914shinohara at gmail

Is there a local bus that tourists can take around the island?
Tetsuo S
My name is Tony Shinohara based in Suo-Oshima Island.
I'm sorry that it might be too late to answer to your question, we do have local bus that anybody can take around the island.
It starts from nearest train station named "Obatake" and drive around the island. However, this is not very often.
Could you please send me an email at tony8914shinohara@gmail so that I can give your more detailed information in accordance to your plan.
