‪Visited the area during the school holidays. Love the scenery, food and accommodation. Stay at Tuckeroo cottages and visited Boonah, Queen Mary's Falls and came home via Mt Tamborine.

‪Mount Barney is out in the scenic rim and it is just stunning! This is an uncrowded location with not a lot of amenities but for anyone wanting a true bush experience - it is great!‬

‪The hike to the lower pools in the gorge at Mt Barney is a category 4 walk and took us over an hour each way (7.4KM round trip).

You would have to be fit and mobile to do it as there's a lot of steep and rough terrain to negotiate. Not suitable for very young children.

The lower pools are beautiful and though cold, great for a swim.‬

‪I have done the East Summit twice now - once from the Southern Ridge route (AKA Peasants Ridge) and then from the South-East Ridge Route. There are other routes but i would say these would be the most common. The Southern route is slightly easier in terms of technical requirements as the South-East is slightly more exposed.

It took me about 3.5 hours up to the Eastern Summit from the Yellow Pinch carpark. You cover about 1000m vertical elevation gain so it is rather decent by Australian standards. You do need your wits about you as it is possible to get a bit lost closer to the top where the track isn't so obvious and there is some rock scrambling involved where it is possible to take various routes. The scrambling is fun and nothing too daring.

BEFORE YOU DO IT:
- Pack food and plenty of water. I take 4 litres as a guide and typically only do the hike in the cooler months.
- Check weather forecast. It would be pretty sketchy in poor weather
- Use the toilets at the carpark as there are no other toilets along the hike
- Take a 1st Aid kit.
- Know that mobile phones won't have reception for a lot of the route. You do get it here and there but not all the time so don't count on being able to use it.
- Research some hiking notes for the trail you want to do!!! Even get a topo map to help or perhaps go with someone familiar with the tracks for your first time. It's easily to stray off the track (i had this happen on the descent down the Southern ridge when going from the East Summit to the saddle "Rum Jungle" which lies between the East and West peaks).
- Leave early to allow plenty of time for the hike.

Overall it is a tough day but well worth it. It takes the average person 8-10 hours to complete pending fitness and stops etc. I have done it in just under 8 with several stops and 45 minutes at the top but I'd always allow a bit more time in case you get lost and need to back-track a bit to get your bearings again or if you sprain an ankle etc.. It would be hell trying to find your way out in the dark of night if you weren't familiar with the routes and didn't have good torches.‬
