This is quite a serious trek in May and not just a ‘walk’. Wear proper hiking boots and waterproofs! It is not easy to get to the start (base of chairlift) unless in own car, via a taxi from nearby town (eg spa town of Sapareva Banya) or by tourist group from Sofia. We stayed in SB and it has fabulous spa facilities.
In late May there is a lot of snow above 2,200m. Due to amount of snow we only made it to the third chalet/hut at approx 2250m but it was still a great experience and we saw four of the lakes. The lakes are not blue in spring, they are mostly still frozen but it is still a spectacular landscape. The chair lift was closed but due to open on the Bulgarian national holiday. (Maybe that is opening day for chairlift every year?) The first section follows a 4WD track that zigzags under the chairlift and takes one hour steep walking to reach the main chalet.
The total ascent from start of chairlift to the third hut was 750m, and after the main chalet it is not always easy to locate the normally well marked path as it was covered in snow for sections up to 300m long. We only saw 10 people all day and most were naïve and not properly equipped! We stopped at third hut as beyond there it was entirely snow covered and too difficult. In summer with no snow it is probably an easy walk up to the ridge but very different in spring and autumn. Our walk took five and half hours return to base of chairlift.

Был на Рильских озерах 10 марта. Внизу, у подъемника, была температура воздуха +5-7 градусов без ветра и был одет соответственно этой погоде. Ни при покупке билета, ни при посадке на подъемник, никто нас не предупредил, что на верхней станции сильный ветер со снегом. Когда подымались в люльке, почти отморозили себе руки и ноги.

Po przyjeździe z Sofii dość krótko podziwiamy bardzo ładne freski i zabudowania Rilskiego Monastyru, bo śpieszno nam już na szlak, by zdobyć Malowicę. Na początku ścieżka wije się zboczami porośniętymi zaroślami, by po jakimś czasie przejść w odsłonięte trawiaste polany. Jest pusto i cicho, tylko gdzieś w oddali słychać dzwonki i beczenie owiec, które, jak na przekór, zawsze są po innej stronie wzgórza niż my. Dopiero póżniej, po pokonaniu stromych i kamienistych wzniesień, wreszcie je zobaczymy, ale już z oddali, z góry. Na przełęczy wiatr przeszywa nas do szpiku kości, co jest najlepszą motywacją, by ruszyć dalej, na szczyt. Z Malowicy rozciąga się przepiękny widok na okoliczne doliny i szczyty. Nic tylko podziwiać i podziwiać... Schodzimy smutni, że to już koniec, ale z nadzieją, że może kiedyś tu jeszcze wrócimy.
Wędrówka tutaj to ukoronowanie podróży po Bałkanach: wreszcie możemy odpocząć od zgiełku nadmorskich kurortów i wielkomiejskiego gwaru - tylko my, góry i wiatr we włosach…

Tienen que ir, un lugar más que belliísmo, bien señalizados los senderos. Se llega con un telefèrico com vistas Hermosas, y en el día perfectamente se pueden hacer todos los lagos, un lugar mágico!!

Если вы прилетели в Софию, и у вас есть 1 день, то точно потратьте его на посещение Рильских озер. Подъем на канатной дороге будет стоить 12 лев в одну сторону или 20 лет туда-обратно, рассчитывайте свои силы, но в принципе, любой более менее спортивный человек справится.
Виды просто потрясающие, можно любоваться 7 озерами, а также обойти каждое по тропинкам.
Для тех, кто любит треккинг и горы - это просто must see!

Очень много троп можно выбрать по душе!!! Я обошла 7 Рильских озер, а также место силы болгарских " Белых братьев" - случайно :), а можно дойти до Рильского монастыря! До водопадов - есть несколько троп. Есть Хижи для ночевки в горах, так что дерзайте.

There are many picturesque landscapes, but this one is guaranteed to be one of the most beautiful experiences. In October 2020 I was lucky enough to make a great tour here by sunshine. I would like to repeat this tour ones in winter. The drive to the parking lot of the national park was about 1 hour from Sofia. For 20 leva (10 euros) you bought the ticket there and back and the tour can start. You should plan about 4-5 hours and lots of photo stops - since the area is worth a photo at every point.

I hiked in the National Park for 4 days at the beginning of winter. There was quite a bit of fresh snow, some of it on top of ice, and I needed my crampons. The mountains are outstanding, especially on the lesser-known trails- most people do the 7 Lakes-> Monastery traverse, but I took various different routes.
I'd especially like to thank Ventsi at the Ivan Vazov hut. The guy has lived for 30 years in the mountains, knows lots of stuff, is super-interesting, and can definitely give a tip or two to really make the trip something special.
There isn't the depth of terrain you can get in some other countries- of walking for days and days into deep deep mountains; but it winter, some of it has that feel, and you can really get away and to somewhere very special and beautiful with relatively little time and effort.

Very beautiful nature, a lot of things to do like Rila Seven lakes, Rila Monastery, Stobski Pyramides, Borovets Ski Courort and a lot of others. Food in this region is very delicious, people are very nice guestly. But you can see such nature and pure air very rare.

Nosotros no recorrimos la ruta de los 7 lagos, hicimos la pequeña ruta que va desde el monasterio hasta la cueva en la que según la leyenda se instaló y vivió durante 12 años Ivan Rilski (San Juan de Rila). Este, falleció en el año 946 y en un principio fue enterrado en la cueva, cuenta la leyenda que su cuerpo quedó incorrupto, no se descompuso como es lo normal. Por eso a la muerte del santo la llaman “Dormición”. Ahora sus restos se encuentran en el interior de la iglesia del monasterio.
El paseo está muy bien, el paisaje es muy bonito. Además, en el camino vimos muchos avellanos, una iglesia, una fuente sagrada y la cueva. Me gustó.
Muy recomendable.

Hi, we are planning a trip to the Rila mountains in Bulgaria in the beginning of October. Are the cable cars still open at that time of year?

Good evening! I would like to you guys if it’s recommended to go hiking and the same day returning by lift. Are there obvious signs at the paths as well? We are coming from Greece we have no info about this destination. Is it possible to provide us some information about our route and any helpful tips? I want to be sure that we can return by lift! I understood that it is possible to get to the actual lake-side (not only see from afar) from the round route (5 lakes). Anyone can share any details about how and where exactly?

If you are talking about the hike to the 7 Lakes, I can explain the details.
We drove to the starting point which is accessed via Sapareva Banya (1 hr from Samokov where we stayed).
From Sapareva Banya, we took a windy hilly road to the parking area from which we took a ski lift to the stop. On the map it says, “Pionerska” (1520m) and the top says Pilski Ezra (2135m). So, we started the hike from the top. Once you get to the top, the elevation gain and loss is very little. On our hike, we saw 5 of the lakes. Absolutely beautiful. Wanted to make sure we got back before the last ski lift closed.
If I remember correctly, the ski lift does not operate every day. Check this out.
