As is usual, visiting Guruvayoor Temple is a great experience. However, what never changes is the terrible and extremely bad attitude of the Devesom board employees who think they own the temple. They are very rude and their behaviour to the worshipers is of very poor quality and leave a very bad taste in an otherwise great visit. Time they got sent to a personnel training school, where they are taught inter-personnel skills and the value of good behaviour. What a shame!!

Business minded approach to a divine temple may not be a good approach. Some effort needs to be taken to improve the infrastructure around the temple and the town.

The Place has really a devine felling, I had visited on Saturday and it was Sabrimala season, the darshan queue took bit more than 2 hours. The queue was bit less in the afternoon. The queue on Sunday was even longer from 4am itself.

Now who can review the home of Krishna himself. Albeit some useful tips for those who wish to visit the majestic Guruvaryur temple.
The temple gets crowded on weekends, so if possible visit on a weekday, alternatively the 1000/- per head passes are totally worth it and can be easily booked online as well as at the temple itself.
Dress code is strictly observed, however there are shops near by which can provide Mundu for men (Lungi), with a velcro. Trust me, its really convenient with a velcro.
Though there is a cloak room service, however the queue to put things there is long, so most of the people just leave their footwears outside somewhere. We did the same and found them exactly as is at the same spot :).
The special darshan takes about 30 minutes, with the crowd being organized nicely, though the time one gets infront of the deity is only about 2-3 sec. So make sure you are attentive to make the best use of it.
Parking facility is available closer by but mostly full, and honestly not ample for the kind of crowd the temple attracts.
For those who do not know Malayalam, its a bit of challenge out there to figure out the right place to get in the queue. Make sure to confirm from 2-3 people to avoid any misunderstandings.

Special Darshan is Rs 1000 per person and 4500 for 5 (not sure why a discount only when it’s 5).
Cloak rooms for footwear and phones, digital watches etc. they charged me Rs 12 for phone + footwear. Allowed to take the wallet inside (though last time they mentioned it’s leather hence not allowed).
Guys need to wear mundu and have to carry their shirt or tshirt in their hands.
Most of the information is mentioned in English and Malayalam (Eg special Darshan counter, Prasadam counter etc.).
However, most important information like where to enter for special Darshan or where to pick up the Prasadam kit for special Darshan is mentioned in small fonts, hence either ask or read all notice boards.
I went at 4.15 am on a Friday, the guy at the cloak room told me to go in the normal queue since there are ‘few’ people so early in the morning. Unless you want to spend an hour in the queue (minimum), that too at 4am, suggest going for special Darshan if you can afford it. I was out of the temple in about 15 mins (the time will vary depending on how early or late we go for Darshan).
Note: both the normal and special queues eventually merge, and you get about 3 to 5 seconds to have a clear look at Guruvayurappan. The only difference with special Darshan is that you get a smaller queue.
The Prasadam kit had 2 bananas, 1 sugar prasadam and 1 packet of chandana kuri.
Tip: If you’re new to wearing mundu, walk slowly :-)
Some shops are open early morning (4am), hence basics like a mundu etc can be purchased incase you do not have it.

The temple is right in the middle of town. We took a taxi from Kochi and our driver parked in a new parking garage nearby. The temple is a short walk from there.
The lines are very long here no matter when you go. We arrived at 10am on a Tuesday, and there were folks who had lined up at 5am only just leaving. We were advised to go to the line where you pay 1000 Rupees per person for the neivilakku donation. This put us in a much quicker lane, and we were out in about 45 minutes. Not sure I agree with this "Fast pass" approach for a temple, but we were time limited.
The Darshan is only a few seconds, and they rush people along. I don't think I will return. We will perhaps visit other temples in Kerala like Ambalapuzha or Trivandrum.

Located north of Thrissur, one can reach the temple by train or by road from Thrissur or Coimbatore (about 4 hours drive) by air. There are a number of hotels around the temple but recommended to stay in one close to it. We stayed in Hotel Guruvayur Bungalow, which is just 100m from the temple.
As per tradition in most temples in Kerala, men (including young boys) have to wear a white 'mundu' or lungi and be bare-chested, while women can visit in dresses or saris (no jeans etc).
The temple has a lot of visitors and darshan can take anything between 2-4 hrs..there's a special darshn facility for Rs 1000 per head (bit costly in my opinion) but saves the long queue if you're shirt on time. The temple itself is very beautiful and peaceful..do ask the local pujaris inside to learn more about it than just doing the darshan.
At 9:30 every night there's an elephant procession within the temple, which one must watch. Also, there are Bharatanatyam dances depicting various ancient tales which go on during evening and night.
Overall, a beautiful and must visit temple in Kerala.

Mohan Krishnan
كوالالمبور, ماليزيا542 مساهمة
Yes. For men, no shirts or any kind of upper wear allowed and only with dhothi/ mundu/vesti allowed. For women, proper attire ( Salwar, saree). Sometimes, ladies wearing jeans will also be denied entry. Just carry this along to avoid disappointment
