‪Awesome drive from Shimoga. Full of greenery.. Excellent roads..
Though we went during the peak monsoon , the water flow is less.. But nice view with a layer of mist. Lot of construction work is going on. Went on Aug 15 th.. A v.long weekend.. Expected heavy crowds.. But it was manageable.. Car parking was nicely monitored by policemen.
But the place around is poorly maintained. The tourists throw plastics, food waste everywhere. Filthy place..
No proper restaurant. Unhygienic stalls.. ‬

‪Jog Falls can be reached from multiple directions, including the Shivamogga-Sagara side and the Ranibennur-Sidapura side. We traveled via the Sidapura route, which involves taking the Pune-Mumbai national highway from Ranibennur and reaching Sidapura through Soraba. Sidapura is home to several waterfalls, among which Burude Falls is less crowded and remains relatively isolated, preserving its raw forest surroundings. It is also less littered, as it is not frequented by too many visitors. However, the roads leading to the falls are partially mud roads, making it difficult for small cars to reach the viewpoint.

Halfway down, well-built stairs with railings are provided, allowing people of all ages to access the lower viewpoint. After November, visitors are allowed to go down to the riverbed. When we visited, a Gram Panchayat representative was present at the falls, and no entry fee was collected. It would be beneficial if the Gram Panchayat enforced strict rules prohibiting food and plastic bottles at the falls, as waste was being thrown in areas that are otherwise easy to clean.

From here, we also visited Nipli Falls (also known as Husker Falls), but this place was disappointing. Many tourists were bathing despite the low water levels, and the area was littered with plastic and waste throughout the entire stretch. Despite the Gram Panchayat collecting ₹50 per vehicle, they simply blame the public for the mess, offering the standard response that they clean the area every Monday. However, there were still more than ten truckloads of garbage present. The nearby food stalls also contribute to the littering and show little concern for cleanliness. The dustbins provided by the Gram Panchayat are broken and left unused.
Sidapura to Jog Falls is less than 20 kilometers, and Jog Falls has two entry points: a less crowded back gate with no entry fee, and a front gate where construction is ongoing, creating a total mess in handling crowds and vehicle parking. Unfortunately, the day we visited was cloudy, and the moisture from the falls made it impossible to see much of its beauty.

The area is completely littered, with no visible efforts from the tourism or forest departments, despite the fact that they have constructed large buildings that are now abandoned and left to ruin. If there were an Olympic event for wasting national resources, India would surely win the gold medal. Simply putting up a sign that says "World Famous Jog Falls" does not make a destination world-famous.

We stayed at a small hotel called Mathuga, which is 8 kilometers towards Sagara from Jog Falls, just 500 meters off the main road to the state highway. The hotel has put up some signs at the crossroads, making it easy to identify. They offer various room types, costing approximately ₹3200-4000 for two guests, with or without food. The hotel also has a pool that was decently maintained.

The next morning, we had breakfast and headed to Honnemaradu, which is located off the state highway between Sagara and Jog Falls, approximately 11 kilometers away. Most of the last stretch is a mud road, and traveling on it during a rainy day might be challenging. Although you’ll pass through many small hamlet villages with just a few houses, the entire stretch is isolated and surrounded by dense vegetation on both sides.

At the end of the road, you’ll reach the last house with a small signboard and a walkable path leading to the backwaters of the TB Dam. The place is clean, offers a good viewpoint, and is worth taking some photos. There are only a few cows and a single house at this point. However, be cautious, as many trees have fallen or are leaning over the road in several places. We then attempted to visit the Tungabhadra Dam, but the security at the gate did not grant us permission as the dam is considered crucial infrastructure and is guarded. Access is not allowed for the general public without prior permission, and even then, it is restricted to educational tours only.

So, we proceeded to another dam's backwater near Kargal, where the tourism department operates a Jungle Lodges and Resorts property with riverfront cottages. However, we noticed that the resort was poorly maintained, with inadequate upkeep. The tariff is ₹4000 per person, which includes all meals, a visit to Jog Falls in their own vehicle, and water sports such as speed boating, jet skiing, kayaking, and a water trampoline.

We opted for a speedboat ride, which cost ₹300 per person for 30 minutes. The boat driver was very friendly, making the experience enjoyable. However, the overall area was littered and lacked proper maintenance. It would be better if the tourism department outsourced the maintenance to private companies, as this could improve the upkeep and potentially commercialize the area, given the low tourist footfall compared to the investment made in these places. The boat ride was a good experience with beautiful views.

Later, we had a pure vegetarian lunch at a small but neat place called Swathi Hotel, also known as Battru Mess. The meal cost ₹80 for unlimited servings, including palya, pickle, papad, menasinakayi, rice, sambar, rasam, and curd. Everything was perfectly prepared and delicious.

There are many other places to visit, such as Bheemeshwari Falls, Keladi, and other tourist spots around the area, but we were short on time. We then tried to visit Jog Falls again, but due to heavy traffic, we decided to leave and returned home via the same route through Sidapura, Soraba, Ranibennur, Davangere, Sira, and Tumkur. Overall, it was a short but memorable trip. If one plans for a week, they can explore Bhatkal, Sirsi, Sagara, and the entire Shimoga district.‬

‪One of the worst place to visit, specially on Sundays. Went there 2 days back on 10th August 2024. There were less waterflow which is absolutely fine. But tourists were terrible. Bad and pathetic crowd who doesn’t even have civic sense. Bad management who are clueless on how to manage things. Ridiculous stinky toilets with people crawling to get in, btw they are charging it to use it. TMT bars were kept near to the railing which people decided to climb which could have been fatal. No value for human lives

We went there after going through few videos added by influencers. Please don’t get fooled by these people. They don’t show the real picture. They go there on weekdays since they have been invited by the guesthouse which is located at the jog falls‬

‪As usual Jog falls was great.
But be mindful, there are 2 entrances. One, the main one from where you can see all the 4 falls. But that is user renovation now. And there are scammers there to dupe you off 1000 bucks to show you waterfall from top view.
Little ahead there is another entrance, from where you can see 2 falls. We went through that and had a spectacular view without a dime. This one govt owned too.‬

‪Beautiful as all the pictures that I've seen since childhood. Lot of construction activity going on near the falls as they are doing some developmental work.‬

‪Well, it was not what I expected based on the review. The water was less, and the whole place was on a massive construction. Dusty and muddy. The restaurant was dusty as well, but due to no other options, we had our meals there. In my opinion best to go end of next year.‬

‪I am very much dusappointed at the sheer lack of maintenance of the spot. In late october, there was much less water than the rainy season. ‬
