Basically it wasn't open. I'd checked the website and there were no large flags to say "not open to the public at this time". Fortunately we were able to go to the nearby free Bathurst park which was delightful.
The owners may feel this review is unfair but this is a highly rated local attraction on Tripadvisor and if it's going to be closed for most of the year they should be flagging this clearly on their website.
It sounds great. But if you don't go in the brief three weeks it's open to the public you won't be able to see it. Unless it's "a local attraction for local people".

So sad that Lydney Park gardens are not open this Easter. We have visited these amazing gardens for years. Is there any particular reason for this.
There will be lots of disappointed visitors this year.

This garden is absolutely gorgeous, masses of colour in a beautiful woodland setting. One of the best displays of rhododendrons & azaleas we have seen anywhere.
We were also able to see the large herd of deer on our way in & visited the ruins of the Roman Temple & Bath House, quite a steep climb but worth it for the views.
There is plenty of parking and you can pay with card or cash, they seemed to be happy to take either & no pre-booking needed.
Sadly the gardens are only open Wednesdays & Sundays plus Bank Holiday Monday and close on 6th June. If you haven't got time to visit before then, make sure you look out for the opening dates for next year. It is certainly worth a visit & excellent value for money, we highly recommend it.

A hidden gem, fantastic gardens with Roman ruins to visit. A visit can be spent for a few hours exploring. With deer roaming the fields of the estate this is a picturesque place to be.
Dog friendly too.

Lydney park gardens is a place of horticultural delight. Arriving by following the impressive driveway winding up to the house with deer in abundance.
Inexpensive day out, parking in on grass. The gardens are exceptional in bloom and only open for a short time in the year.
Spring when the rhodendrones are out.
Several hours lost wandering in happiness.
With the entrance fee you get to visit the gardens, Roman temple settlement where Tolkien found inspiration, the museum and if course the tea rooms and house gardens
Go on a dry day far more fun X

This is a real hidden gem. Only open on limited days I went there looking for the Roman remains but found so much more. I spent 3 to 4 hours wandering around the beautiful landscape for a small entrance free. You park in the grounds and the Roman remains (a large temple and bath house) are at the top of a hill with a gravel bath leading up. The Roman temple in particular is really impressive with large steps leading to the entrance. Back down the he grounds the gardens are absolutely stunning with lakes, steppingstones and waterfalls surrounded by the beautiful spring flowers. Back at the house there is a wonderful little museum with lots of Roman finds that the lady showed me with great enthusiasm. After the long walk the afternoon was topped off by lovely tea and cake on the terrace. I will definitely be going back

We stopped here on our way back home from a weekend away.
A pleasant hour or so spent in beautiful gardens. We did think the car parking charge was a bit steep, £5.00 each.
The house was also interesting with a bit of a museum in it, also loved the wild deer in the park.
I would recommend it, but not a whole day out trip

Lovely walks along rhodedendron and azalea edged paths. The smell is divine. There is also a beautiful lake and a great museum too. Tea and homemade cakes are delicious. Very helpful staff. Thoroughly recommend a visit.

Spent a lovely afternoon in the gardens - the spring flowering shrubs were spectacular, and there was a real peace and tranquillity to the gardens. It’s great that dogs are welcomed (if well behaved and on the lead) and many visitors there were taking advantage of this. If only more gardens could be this inclusive. The Roman temple and bathhouse remains are well worth seeing. I recommend the guidebook at only £2. The gardens are only open on a few days, and for a few weeks, but well worth a visit.
