We started by boat at 8.30am from resort at tapola. It took us 1 & 1/2 hrs to reach the base boat station. The person who took us by boat accompanied us till the top of the fort and he was very kind to help us. The shivsagar agro tourism (our stay) packed our food (chapati bhaji) for lunch at the top. We started our trek by 10:45 after paying entry fee 30rs per person and checking plastics in our bags (they check it after coming down so one doesn’t throw plastic and food waste in the reserved forest. So, make sure you don’t litter in the nature). you’ll need to deposit 500rs which is refundable if the count of plastic matches after returning from fort. We reached the top by 12:45. Professional trekkers might take 1/1.5hrs and if you have an aged person with you, it might take 3hrs, but make sure you start as early as possible. The trek had approx 3kms of walk with lesser gradient and last 1km was the difficult steep climb. But the view you get to see is worth the sweat while climbing. They say “the best view comes after the hardest climb”. All our tiredness was gone when the fresh cold breeze touched our face and our eyes saw the best view one could ever see. The fort is not well resorted so one can just see some remains of it and a mandir. Had our lunch under a tree shed and we were ready to descend at 2:30. It took us 2hrs to climb down i.e., 4:30. The forest is a reserved home to many Bengal tigers and other animal species. Ultimately, I would say the trek was the worth the pain. I would surely recommend vasota trek if you are in or near tapola.

Basic Info: Vasota Fort, a less known Fort to History located between most biodiverse forest in the world. This fort is a must visit place for folks who want to experience of lake side Camping and moderate trekking experience
Difficulty Level: Moderate, you may get your kids with you (preferably 5+yrs), if they love trekking & camping
Routes: If you are starting from Pune it will take 4.5 hrs. nonstop to reach Bamnoli the base village to take a boat ride. So better to start by night as to reach in time. I prefer to start by 11 PM, so as to reach Bamnoli by 3 AM. You may take some rest & then start trekking.
Best time to visit: Fort is in dence Forest near Koyana dam back water due to which it is open to visit to outsiders from October till June only. After February Koyana Back water start going down and you have to walk more in Hot climate, which may be difficult
Other Info for trekking: Vasota rides close at 10am in the morning it takes 1.5 hrs. in a slow noise diesel boat to reach Vasota fort base and 2.5 to 3 hrs. of ascend to reach the top.
Vasota fort closes at 5 pm in afternoon so you have to comeback by 5 PM at Vasota fort base, so It will better if you start as early as possible. If you start by 8 -8.30am @ Bamnoli to get checked in then you have sufficient time in hand to enjoy.
The boat ride takes 1.5hrs to reach Vasota ...... the boat ride is fun and scenic but very noisy.
The mandatory costs:
Entry ₹30/person
Boat Parking ₹150
Tiger entry fee. ₹100
Guide mandatory ₹200
Boat hire. ₹3500
Total for say 5 4150
It takes 20min for the forest and police verification at Bamnoli
Further at Vasota a deposit of Rs 50 per plastic bag/bottle is to be deposited
About the fort:
It was famously defended by Tai Telin a mistress of Pant Pratinidhi a killedar of the fort when he was captured. Vasota always remained with Marathas, Shirkes & Mores in 16th century. Shivaji Maharaj incorporated the fort into Swarajya in 1655 during the conquest of Javli. Shivaji Maharaj renamed the fort "Vyaghragad" (Vyaghra – means tiger), owing to its difficult natural defense. In 1818 the British bombarded the fort with heavy artillery, destroying many buildings on Vasota (Chandika mandir, Daru-kothar, etc.) and looted property worth 5 lakhs.
Tips for good journey -
1) Start you trek in morning only as all boats are leave at same time. It is better to leave early to get enough time to explore Vasota.
2) Night stay not allowed in the Vasota, Forest authority completely ban this for safety purpose for human and for forest. even everyone has comeback before 5pm.
3) Plastic bag & bottles are not allowed in the forest. But Bottles for drinking water are allowed after proper checking from the forest officers. They count bottles at entry & exit so don't spoil or throw anywhere in forest to avoid fines. Please maintain cleanliness of forest.
4) It is always better to stay in group, as forest has wild animals too. Don’t expect to find wild animals (being a forest area), the reason being there are at least a hundred people trekking.
5) All the bags are checked by forest officers, do not carry unnecessary plastic, no alcohol, knifes, matchbox, lighters etc. This is checking is done before you board the boat. This is the last place where we will get water, would recommend each individual to carry 2 liters of water (plastic bottles is also fine)
6) The trek is about 4 kms one way and for those two are not seasoned it will through up challenges, but with the right spirit you should be able to complete, We had a few individuals who have never done, they had some struggle, but finished the trek so don't worry too much.
7) You can opt for paying guest in some of the houses or even rent tents which are generally installed near the boating club area surrounded by water. If it's a big group, they also help for night campfire in the center as well as home cooked dinner. You can enjoy the night, sleep in the tents.
8) Unfortunately, sanitation options are very poorly maintained, maybe you have to compromise on this front.
Things to carry for trek:
A water bottle to carry at least 2 liters of water per person
Sport shoes with good holding grip
Some dry food, as you will not get anything once you left Bamnoli (base village)
Do carry instant energizers like Glucon-D or Tang (especially during sunny day)
Better avoid wearing Gold and other ornaments.
This is place where every nature lover would like to visit multiple time. Have good journey & comeback with good memories.

Vasota fort falls in the Jawli region of Satara. The forest is quite dense and requires a prior permission to visit. You have to take a boat ride to reach the base of the fort. It takes around 2.5 hrs to reach atop. Plastics & the other garbeges are not allowed. Forest dept. counts how much platic you are carrying. You are not suppposed to throw plastic on the fort. That is why you find the fort clean. The ascend is gradual but it;s pleasing because the forest protects you from the sun rays int he day time. You have to start early from Bamnoli & so that you can reach back to bamnoli by 5. Beyond that it is not allowed to stay there. You have to carry a packlunch and eat on the fort, There is no water on the way so carry enough water which will suffice till you come down at the base of the fort. On the base, there is a forest dept's office, you can refill water once you come down. Pls carry a good rucksack, wear trekking shoes. Do not carry a handbag/suitcase. it will create difficulties in ascending & descending. The view from atop is picturesque- includes Koyna catchment area(which you cross from bamnoli to reach the base),Nageshwar falls towards right and plenty of bio diversity, flaura, fauna of Sahyadris. Visit the place and enjoy the beauty of Sahydri range in Maharashtra

Vasota Fort , a less known Fort to History located between most bio diversed forest in the world.
We are planning to visit Vasota from last three months and finally completed in February. As I told before, the Fort is located in dence Forest near Koyana dam back water due to which it is open to visit to outsiders From October till June only.
Best time to Visit is from October to February. After February Koyana Back water start going down and you have to walk more in Hot climate , which may be difficult.
We have made prior booking for stay, food , forest permission and Boat ride , which costs us Rs.1100 per person. Package included One Dinner, Breakfast, parcel lunch, Tent Stay, Forest Permission, Boat Ride for 13 people. No hot water is available for morning bath, you have choise to have it with Child tap water or swimming in River, which is safe and very near from camp.
We have started around 8.30 AM from Bamnoli through Diesel boat which took around 1 Hr. 45 min. to reach at Tapola base. You have to deposit Rs.500 against the plastic bag and bottles , which refunded if you carry everything back after trip. It took hardly 15 min to complete the formality.
We choose to complete Nageshwar temple darshan first and Vasota Fort in second half. We reached to Nageshwar Temple around 12 AM. Had a great views of Sahyadri trails and Konkan also had first close look of Vasota Fort.
We had small snack breck and immediately started towards Vasota Fort. It took another 1 Hr. 30 min to Reach Vasota Fort. It's starts becoming difficult with passing hour to maintain Pace with our guide and our group of 12 become 4 different groups. With the roads having good footprint and other groups passing by there is no chane to get lost.
We have reached Vasota Fort near around 1.45 PM, have good look of reminders of old glory of Maratha Kingdom and start walking back. Had Lunch, which we carried all the from Bamnoli and rush back to Boat for return journey. Got our deposit back and took long nap of 1 Hr 15.min in Boat which help us to get our breath in place.
Points to note
1. If you don't have treking experience avoid visiting Nageshwar
2. Carry water 2 liter per person
3. If needed drink water from local wells after consultation of guide.
4. Carry minimum required thing's only.
5. Start early in the morning
6. Enjoy the nature and try to be safe, immediate medicl help is 3 Hr. Away.
7. Listen to Nature and your guide it's make you more knowledgeable.
8. Watch your feet, forest has snakes etc.
It's hard to find any animals as most of Young groups always keep making sounds.
One thing is sure , we realy come more close to mother nature after visiting Vasota Fort and Koyana Forest.
We must acknowledge good efforts of Forest Department, Local villegers ,Hotel owners and Boating Club for keeping all the things in place and working conditions.

Further at vasota a deposit of Rs 50 per plastic bag/bottle is to be deposited
Cost of travel Pune to vasota 380km round trip petrol ₹2000 toll ₹150
Time constraints
If you are starting from Pune it will take 4.5 hrs non stop to reach kaas -bamnoli the base village to take a boat ride ......vasota rides close at 10am in the morning it takes 1.5 hrs in a slow noise deseal boat to reach vasota fort base and 2 to 2.5 hrs of assend to reach the top ....... vasota fort closes at 4 pm in afternoon so you will have to reach by 8 -8.30am @ bamnoli to get checked in and have ample time in hand to enjoy.
The boat ride
The boat takes 1.5hrs to reach vasota ...... the boat ride is fun and scenic but very noisey
Trek
The trek route though throw dense forest with a very wide and clearly
demarcated trail there is no reason of getting lost .the claim that one can find wild animals is a big sham the reason being there are at least a hundred people trekking. The trek is a long trail just like (Raigad minus the balekilla and shorter say by 20%) around 80% is through forest so all you see are trees for most part no scinery no animals and since it opens in Oct there are no waterfalls either....the real fun is only when you reach the top where you have mind-blowing views of valley and Babu kada...and also the patent lake shivsagar view. apart from this in given time constraints there is nothing much to explore at the top ie just 3 spots
Summary
The trek is fun but do not have high expectations as a lot is built up by Instagram and trekking groups also ....considering the efforts to fit in the time constraints travel time and money spent it is a bit overpriced for a group of 5 .

This was long pending and we did it in No-2017. Well organised and managed by Wandering Souls. A Medium level difficulty wonderful trek thru jungle after 1 hour boat ride from Bamnoli. The views from top- Babukada are just too good. Best time to visit is- Nov to Feb. Forest dept is strict about plastic garbage which was a pleasant surprise. One of the cleanest fort and fort routes I have ever visited.
We camped on Bamnoli banks after trek in cold night with campfire, ghost stories, antakshari and all. Overall it was a trek to remember for long. Thanks to Wandering Souls

Vasota fort should be on must do trek for a trek, fort and nature enthusiast. This gives you a wonderful mix of a large water body (1 hr 15 min) boat ride (one way), nice jungle trek, and of course the riggers of a trek.
We stayed at Bamnoli on Saturday and did the trek on sunday in first week of Dec-17. Quite a few people have struggled to get details on stay, permission etc. Its not so complicated, but with moderm era, we need to have information in advance, I am including the Bamnoli forest dept number for those who need to connect 02168-202020. They can also suggest stay arrangements. Quite a few stay in a temple and there is ample food arrangements available.
We stayed in a tent, and all the arrangement were taken care by the caretaker (Tea, Dinner, Lunch and stay) the place where we stayed also had neat toilets and hence an important issue was also sorted.
We took the forest permit the next day (sunday) and this delayed things a little for us, the boat will take 12 people with a little variance there.
All the bags are checked by forest officers, do no carry unnecessary plastic, no alcohol, knifes, matchbox, lighters etc. This is checking is done before you board the boat. This is the last place where we will get water, would recommend each individual to carry 2 liters of water (plastic bottles is also fine)
The boat ride is for 1 hr 15 mins and you can enjoy the view through and through. NOTE: DO NOT dive in the water for a swim.
One you land at the base, your permit will be validated and they will collect deposit based on the number of bottles you carry and plastic with you. If you do no return with the same number they will deduct 50 Rs per missing item.
Most of the trek is through forest so you will not feel the sun, last few meters do not have forest cover.
The trek is about 4 kms one way and for those two are not seasoned it will through up challenges, but with the right spirit you should be able to complete, We had a few individuals who have never done, they had some struggle, but finished the trek so don't worry too much.
At the top Babu Kada and the view of Nageshwar mandir is wonderful. nothing much to do there.
You should start downward trek by 14:00 as you should be at boat by 16:00. One at the base, you will be refunded the deposit once you have all the content back.
As you reach back to Bamnoli, avoid the temptation of taking a plung in the water, you would be completed exhausted already and getting a judgement of the actual distance to traverse is very difficult. DO NOT jump in water and locals will give you a nice time if you venture and pull you out.
On this specific weekend I guess there seemed to around 400 people who did this trek.
Enjoyed the stay, trek and the boat ride very much. Have a safe one!.

Vasota Fort, one of the best trekking attraction for all trekkers & nature lovers. I visited on Oct 2016 with pune Explorer group & belive in me guys It was really amazing experience.
This is the place where you get boating, trekking, forest experience.
Mode of transport -
As vasota Fort is surrounded by Koyna back water from three side so only boating is mode of transport to get there. Bamnoli is Base village and staring point for the vasota trek. All boat are leave from this place only. As Bamnoli is small village so don't expect good hotel there but you can get home stay in reasonable price. Even tent stay in the vicinity of the back water available their, that is also a very good experience. Mostly all trekkers reach Bamnoli in the early morning at 3 to 4 am & takes rest in the temple for next 3 hours & start trek around 8 am in the morning. You have to spent around 1 hours in boating just in 100 Rs... Yes... It is 100 Rs.. (where can you get this exprince just in 100 rs) Boating experience in back water of Koyna, both side hills & dark forest, morning fresh air was quite amazing & memorable experience. Actually this is main attraction of the vasota Fort trek.
Tips for good journey -
1) start you trek in morning only as all boats are leave at same time. It is better to leave early to get enough time to explore vasota.
2)night stay not allowaded in the vasota, Forest authority completely ban this for safety purpose for human and also for forest. even every one has comeback before 5pm.
2)plastic bag & bottols are not allowed in the forest. But Bottols for drinking water are allowed after proper checking from the forest officers. They count bottles at entry & exit so don't spoil or throw any where in forest to avoid fines . Please maintain cleaness of forest.
3)it is always better to stay in group. As forest has wild animals too.
This is place where every nature lovers would like to visit multiple time. Have good journey & comeback with good memories.

Though we saw some kids doing the trek, I think majority were around 7+ yrs of age. I think they were in groups & were enjoying on the way up.
But am doubtful for 5+ as it's 90 minutes up way & he needs enough energy to keep it going. Also you need something to keep him motivated like group of similar age kids otherwise it's really tough.
Hi
We want to go to Vasota. Few questions please ;
1. Where we can get permission from Forest department ?
2. Can we stay in Satara at night and then reach early to Bamnoli to start trek ?
Kindly help us know.

Hi Nitin,
1. You need to get to bamnoli, where you can seek permission with boat.
2. Yes, prefer to reach really morning to get boat and permission from forest department or you can reach late night and sleep at temple at bamnoli.
hope i am not too late to answer your question.
