‪The temple which was originally a very old one and it's on the river Alaknanda is not maintained properly , otherwise it's a piece of great natur gift.
The other temples have been build and most of the people worship their.basically it is a lord shiva temple.
One will find peace there .if u have real faith.‬

‪This is a Hindu religious place surrounded by greenery. If you visit this temple, please spend 30 more mins to meditate and find the peace of mind.‬

‪The temple has so much history, the location is on the banks of Alakananda, one has to go down about 100 long steps. Maintenance of this divine place is so poor, I saw the person sweeping the first few steps just broomed away lots of plastic towards the river....tourism department/local goverment bodies should take serious initiatives protecting our surroundings....

‪On our way back from Badrinath we went to Koteshwar temple. We did not knew it was long way down. The people there say it is just a little down. But you have to go long way. While returning you have to climb all the way. They have put some benches in between to take rest.
The idol and the place was splendid. But you should be prepared for a long trek.‬

‪It is an ancient grotto temple dating back to a period thousands of years ago. The cave is a part of a huge mountain and locals say that the entire mountain has over 1000 shivlingas on it, about 10-15 of those are even visible on your way down to the temple. A stairway path takes you to the base of the mountain where the temple is situated, with the Alaknanda River flowing adjacently. What amuses me is the water mysteriously seeping through the ceiling and walls of the cave that automatically fall drop-by-drop on the shivlingam. The view of the Alaknanda flowing by between two mountains is a fascinating sight, making Koteshwar Mahadev a perfect spot for spiritual seekers as well as nature lovers alike.‬

‪Rudraprayag, the blessed land , is one of the districts of Uttarakhand, located at the confluence of the sacred rivers, Mandakini & the Alakananda . There is a temple of Rudranath, Hence the name Rudraprayag is given . A road passes straight along the bank of the river Alakananda towards Badrinath Dham ( 160km). The road bifurcates at a point & cross the bridge left towards the Kedarnath Dham (84km) along the river Mandakini. There is a nice view point of the confluence of both the river. It can easily be distinguished by seeing the color of both the rivers. Apart from the temple of Rudranathjee & the confluence, one should not miss the cave temple of Koteshwar Mahadev, 3km away from Rudraprayag , just very near the bank of Alakananda , as the location deserve worth seeing. We were on way to Kanak Chauri from Gangotri via Tilwara, Rudraprayag, when the driver missed the road & reached at the temple gate. I feel to state here that we returned back midway from this temple in Sept,2015.
Though it was not in my itinerary, the miracle is that we were blessed at His mercy & our desire now fulfilled.
Amazing view of nature, lofty hills on both the banks appear to touch each other. One can go downstairs to touch the water of the river as it flows very near the temple. In the month of July/ Augus/ Mahashivaratri, there is heavy rush of pilgrims who take a bath & pray to the Lord Shiva. Koteshwar is one of many avatars of Lord Shivas. The temple itself in the cave is the abode of 10millions ( 1koti ) naturally formed Shivalingams on which water drops incessantly from the hills. Hence the name Kotishwar or Koteshwar. A lamp is there blazing for ever.
The legend is as follows- Lord Shiva hid himself here from Bhasmasur, a demon & meditated in this cave for some time & was able to get the favour of Lord Vishnu who killed this demon & Lord Shiva was on his way to Lord Kedarnath.
After crossing the bridge on Alakananda take right turn on the way to Pokhri, drive farther & again take the right at the point of bifurcation, & you will reach at the gate to the temple. It is about 100 steps to go down to reach the temple courtyard. Pilgrim rest house is there.
Beside the stairs down to the cave there are small temples of Parvati, Ganesha & Hanuman, apart from the temple Lord shiva.‬

‪Koteshwar temple is situated 5 kms from rudraprayag. It is believed that Lord Shiva meditated here before leaving Kedar dham. River Alaknanda flows alongside the temple.

You can view idols of deities - Lord Shiva, Parvatiji, Ganeshji, Hanumanji and Durga maa.

There is a small cave and the temple is inside the cave. You can feel posivity in every corner of temple.‬

‪This temple is about 5 kms from Rudraprayag. We have to climb down about 1 km to the temple. There is a small cave and the temple is inside the temple. Water drips in front of the cave. The River Mandakini flows right next to the temple and it is very scenic. We had a good time in the temple.‬
