This small art museum is perhaps an acquired taste but is set in some lovely grounds.
The front of the museum was a tremendous stone gate with metal scroll work and behind this a lovely pond with waterfall and garden setting. The entry fee was a bit steep at 1,500 yen each. There was a small museum but the main display hall was better. If you are interested they run a couple of videos in the hall about the kimono artwork and how it had been created. Along the walls were several dozen kimonos designed and painted to reflect various scenes. When placed side by side many of them formed a continuing picture of the change of the seasons. There was a red sunrise over Fuji, the setting sun and the progression from autumn to winter. These we could see the artistry and appreciate it but after that they all got a bit the same and the Cherry Blossom ones looked fake. There was an authentic tea room at the back of the building which had a nice view over the gardens.
Alas photography is not allowed inside which limits the experience.

It is definitely worth visiting the beautiful museum created by Itchiku Kubota near Lake Kawaguchi to exhibit his creations, which are not only 'kimonos' but real works of art. The garden is also magnificent. You cannot take pictures of the works on display.

Absolutely gorgeous works of art by Itchiku Kubota. The video was very enlightening, showed how the kimonos were dyed, the process of tying the fabric. The gardens behind are small but lovely. Not wheelchair accessible.

The grounds the museum is in are beautiful and the building itself is interesting. The kimonos are wonderful, full of detail and beautiful colours. It has a nice little gift shop where I bought some unusual gifts which were reasonably priced.
If you go through the shop outside, there is a lovely view of Mount Fuji in the distance. Be patient if you want to take a photo as lots of other people want to take one too.

The ambiance of this little museum is lovely - it’s a perfect way to spend an afternoon strolling through the indoor/outdoor space and the kimono collection is stunning in person. Beautiful little museum.

This small museum was beautifully designed and personally built by the artist to display some of his favorite hand painted and dyed kimonos, as well as his eclectic collection of glass beads and ethnic figurines from his many travels. But the focus remains the extraordinary silk kimonos which were created using an ancient technique called tsujigahana. Hand painted panels stained differentially with a kaleidoscope of dyes and swaths of silk twisted and tied to sequester color and produce relief and three dimensional form. The twenty or so kimonos are an explosion of color with representations of nearby Mt Fuji and different seasons.
The museum is hidden in a wooded lot not far from several major vantage points for Mt Fuji. If has a wonderful tea room inside that should not be missed.

I gave this 5 stars as someone who loves unconventional expressions or art/creativity with a deep respect for people with grit and passion in a single craft. If you like art, are curious how things are made, and attention to minute detail, I’d recommend this experience.
The kimonos Itichku Kubota made are magnificent. A 20 minute video (in English, but ask an aide) helps orient you the process of manufacturing a kimono which set the tone for our visit. The gallery itself is just one room with 25 of his work. Nothing is behind glass, so you can get really close to inspect and marvel at the beauty and craftsmanship. We spent a few minutes admiring the detail and symbolism of the kimonos and were finished by 1.5 hrs.
A few callouts/warnings:
- no pictures are allowed of the kimonos
- be sure to ask an aide to see the English video, which is in a different room of the main exhibit

The kimonos are beautiful, but I would only visit if you are in the area. The gardens in back are pretty. You can sit down for a bite to eat or get something to drink in their little cafe. The exterior of the front looks like something Gaudi designed.

I enjoyed the museum and spent a little over an hour viewing the art. I particularly liked that they displayed their cherry blossum pieces while the cherry blossums were blooming. Just makes you realize that people have been enjoying these trees every years for centuries.

What is the entrance fees for adults and the opening hours and days?
كُتب بتاريخ 28 ديسمبر 2014
There are different hours depending on the season: April-November 0930-1700 (last entry at 1700); December-March 1000-1630 (last entry at 1600). Admission fees are: 1300 yen for adults; 900 yen for college and high school students; 400 yen for junior high and elementary students. Also, there is a discount for groups of more than 15 people.
If you go to Mr. Kubota's direct website (per Trip Advisor, I am not able to post it here), it also gives you a brief history of him and a photos of his magnificent kimono. I hope you make a trip here...although it is a small museum, his kimono are works of art!
