The visitor centre is abandoned
Completely closed there was no signage or anything to tell you it was no longer a place to visit

We left the town and went for a country drive. It’s a short experience (as with every piece of countryside in Kent!) but beautiful none the less. Lovely flat views all around, especially in the sunshine.

It's like the place where time stopped still! Magical, eerie place, full of atmosphere and mystery - great place to explore!

We were very lucky to visit on 3 days, all of which had great weather. So this lovely peaceful, pastural location has open vista of flat countryside, dissected by straight line drainage ditches, and low hedges. And characteristically sheep everywhere.
As to what it would be like to be here in mid- winter, I can only guess. This is a beautiful, almost timeless place

This is a strange church, set in a field to service a village, Fairfield, that no longer exists. There is a causeway through the drainage ditches which is the only safe way to reach it. The church was built of wood in the 13thC and encased in brick in the 18thC but the wooden roof etc remains intact and is wonderful. The interior is Georgian and very origional. The church is locked and the keys are available from the farm just along the road (Beckets Bran Farm). Well worth a diversion if you are in the area.

I was surprised how varied the scenery was given how flat the area is, tall hedgerows, plenty of trees and abundant streams/ditches create an excellent visual spectacle. Fairfield church accessible only on foot is a real iconic image.
Lots of good walking with plenty of quiet and solitude.

In June 2021 we approached the church by car and it's beauty and setting, among fields of sheep, took our breath away. Stopping to slowly admire this exquisite church and to take photographs isn't easy. The country road is narrow. The setting bucolic.
You can obtain a huge old key to go inside the church from a house opposite.
We passed it at all times of the day and in sun and rain. It was always awe inspiring. The proportions are just right. Dare we say it, romantic too!
We visited several ancient churches in the area but few were open.

Great walking and cycling routes, incredibly peaceful with ever changing scenery. Plenty of pubs and cafes on rambling and cycling routes so you can always grab a drink and bite to eat.

St Thomas à Becket Church in Fairfield is arguably the most iconic building on Romney Marsh. It is a beautiful structure that stands alone in a field, surrounded by watercourses and the ever present sheep.
Fairfield, the village it once served, has long since disappeared, but the church has survived and is now part of the civil parish which includes the villages of Brookland, Brenzett and Snargate. The church is dedicated to St Thomas à Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his murder in 1170.
The building dates back to the 13th century but, not surprisingly, had to be mainly rebuilt in the 18th century, when the entire timber building was encased within brick walls, and the roof covered with heavy red tiles. The interior is a simple delight, with interior timber-framing, and low timber arches stretching over the nave, while the congregation is catered for via bright white painted, boxed pews.
St Thomas is still an active church although services, I think, are only monthly. For obvious reasons re location and sheer beauty however, the church is also used frequently for weddings, and I couldn’t help picturing brides and bridesmaids making their way to the church from the road, and trying desperately to avoid treading in sheep poo on the way!

Hi Janet
How is the area for dog walking please? I know the area from childhood, and I am strongly considering moving to this part of the world.
Kindest regards

There are plenty of places to walk a dog including beaches. These are only off limits on certain beaches between 1 May till October to allow holidaymakers the use of the beach. Camber also has some great places for walking dogs
Hope that this helps, also that you will be as happy here as we have been and continue to be.

A WARNING from the intolerant management, pilot restaurant Dungeness
Due to persistent abuse of our hospitality, the maximum stay in our car park is three hours, unless specifically agreed with The Pilot Management, all offenders will incur a £200 fine. Motorhomes and campers are specifically not allowed to park at The Pilot overnight without express permission from The Pilot management. Campers and motorhomes are only allowed to stay overnight if all of the occupants of the vehicle eat meals at The Pilot on the evening of arrival and any vehicles staying overnight must leave before 11am the next day, any vehicles flouting this rule will incur a £200 fine. All overnight stays must respect our neighbours: no noise, no games, no barbeques or other cooking in the car park. Any abuse of our hospitality will result in immediate eviction. The car park is monitored by 24 hour ANPR CCTV and all number plates are logged with number plate recognition. Parking monitoring and enforcement is managed by ANPR Parking Control.
DON’T WORRY, the road behind the pilot takes you to the Britannia inn, also on the beach, specialising in serving fish and chips, now having tried both, I found it is equally as good as the pilot, and cheaper, so if your looking for a ride out to the beach, and wanting a good fish and chips lunch, the Britannia inn is the place, parking no problem, a fish and chips lover.
