Absolutely fantastic day out yesterday, the cost was brilliant for the experience we had.
En route to the station we were stuck in traffic and was worried that we would miss our booking. We called ahead to be told to please not worry and they’d get us on the next train available if that was necessary.
We arrived with time to spare so had a coffee and Eccles cake in the cafe, which was excellently priced. Looking at the menu a jacket potato with filling was less than £7 which is fantastic for a venue like this.
We visited the model railway exhibition upstairs which was so nice and had loads of buttons to press to make things light up or move on the layouts, which delighted my 6 year old.
On our way to our train carriage (our number carriage was written on our tickets when we collected these, which made finding our seats so simple) there was a “snow” machine. My 6 year old absolutely loved running around and throwing the foam around. We got some fantastic photos! All of the carriages were decorated with Christmas window stickers and colourful fairy lights.
On the platform there was plenty of helpful staff to guide you and check that you are in and secure before departing.
The ride itself is wonderful, there was lots of lovely gardens to see, railway crossings, different animals and some beautiful scenery. The journey was roughly 40 minutes but the time flew by. As we approached the station we saw Santa on his sleigh being pulled by the Bug. This delighted us and got us all very excited to see Santa in his grotto!
When we arrived at the Hythe station we decided to have a look around and ride the
Bug before we saw Santa to avoid waiting in a queue as advised by the email itinerary we’d received. The Bug was brilliant, with a Santa sleigh on the back which we took photos with. We watched the engine get turned around on the turntable and my 13 year old, train enthusiast, son was even invited into the signal box.
During our wait to see Santa we went to the activity barn and was given some wreaths to decorate with stickers, these were lovely to make and take home with us. The lady organising the activities in the barn was really helpful and friendly, offering for us to make reindeer food too!
When we went to see Santa the wait wasn’t long at all, the person on the door chatted away to my 6 year old until it was time to see Santa. Santa was brilliant, there was no rush and he spend a while chatting to my 6 year old and respected my 13 year old when he realised he was uncomfortable talking to him, he didn’t try to encourage the engagement further.
Our photo with Santa turned out really lovely and we purchased 2 copies afterwards. Once we left Santa we went for our complimentary refreshments, these included a little lunch box for the children and coffee, mince pies and short bread for the adults.
Our journey back was as delightful as we reflected on how brilliant the day had been and how nice and age appropriate the gifts from Santa were.
We stopped in the shop for souvenirs and was pleasantly surprised at the low price (£2.50 for a fridge magnet).
As a side note, the toilets were very clean and the car park was easily accessible with plenty of spaces.
All in all a fantastic day was had by all. Many thanks to all the incredible staff who made our day perfect!

Every year we travel on this little railway with our grandson as he absolutely loves it and having been twice already this year we decided to take him on the Santa special. Although he is 10 years old and still at the age of do I or don't I believe we decided to give it a go, What a lovely experience from the minute you arrive to leaving. The trip had been very well thought out. Even down to returning on the train to go home and be greeted by a snow scene, Need less to say our 10 year old was very happy and to receive his gift which was well worth it. I would recommend this trip if you can for any little one, you even get a drink, mince pie and biscuit and little ones get a food treat as well in a take away box. I am sure we will be coming back to this railway for many years to come.

Simply perfect. A round trip by steam to Dungeness from New Romney with afternoon cream tea in The End Of The Line café. Good choice of fresh sandwiches, cakes and mince pies, fruit scones with butter, jam and clotted cream. A dash of salad and a few crisps. Plenty of good tea (refilled). A window seat, watching the trains and relaxing with a great view of the wilderness that is Dungeness. Friendly efficient service. Recommended *****

I'm a steam driver on the Brecon Mountain Railway in Wales and visited this great (not so) little railway on 8th September with a good buddy Dave, from Guernsey.
Starting at Dungeness, the staff that met and greeted us were top notch. Very friendly and informative and the cafe team were just as good.
The ride was first class and Phil, the driver of Green Goddess, allowed me to run the engine around with him at Rye, making the trip that little bit extra special.
The weather was a bit changeable but we still rode in the open-sided carriages to get fully immersed in the steam action. All in all a great day out and next time we're in the South East will definitely pay another visit. Well done RHDR. You nailed it!

I first travelled on this railway some 60 years ago, I was on a school holiday & we travelled from New Romney to Dungeness. 36 years later I travelled with my mum & husband from New Romney to Hythe.
This time I travelled with my husband, we bought a Romney Rover ticket & once again started our journey from New Romney. There is plenty of free parking at this station.
First we travelled to Hythe, had a cup of tea at the station & jumped back onto the train & stayed on for the full length of the line to Dungeness. We spent the best part of an hour & 25 minutes there, a strange & fascinating place, well worth a visit. We then travelled back one station to Romney Sands where we visited the Denge Sound Mirrors. A very interesting piece of history. They were quite difficult to find though & not 5 minutes from the station as we were led to believe. Not a problem, we just got the later train back to New Romney. That's the beauty of having the Rover tickets you can get on & off at any of the stations at anytime.
We thought the Rover tickets were good value and we really enjoyed our day on this great little railway, still just as much fun as I remembered. Highly recommended.

This is more than a miniature railway - it links Hythe, Dymchuch and New Romney to Romney Sands and Dungeness, with facilities at many of the stations, but most of the railway action takes place at New Romney where trains come and go. We did the whole of the line stopping at many of the stations using a freedom of the line ticket. You get to compare the remoteness of Dungeness with the towns further up the line and a great way to see the countryside in between. Excellent staff make this a must do day out

Little railway line with a big heart. The carriages are tiny. You sit in twos but you can fit your friends in around behind and in front. Your knees bump your facing passengers. We rode 2 stops, had a short stop with ice creams then rode back. The cafe is adequate. The trains are very sweet and the views are lovely, especially passing so close to gardens.

Is there a Day Pass available for the Hythe and Dymchurch miniature railway, where you can visit places of interest along the whole route, if so how much would a ticket cost for a Senior??

If you go online then you can purchase various tickets (as we did) and then you have the choice of what you require. You can get off and on as you please, be mindful of the train times passing so you don't end up missing one!

Hi, which station is the best to park at for the railway?
hseal45
لندن, UK1,390 مساهمة
Most probably Dungerness as loads of spaces, Hythe (other end of line) quite close to the town so limited spaces. The other stations on the route I am not sure, but one was within a holiday park so access may be limited. Hope this helps.
How much is it to take your dog on the train
