We travelled with Abdalla Hassan of Memphis Tours on a day trip from Luxor to Dendera and Abydos. It is about an hour and a half to Dendera, another hour and a half to two hours to Abydos (you go through the town which slows things down) and about 2 and a half hours back to Luxor via the main highway. Our guide, originally from Abydos, strongly recommended not going on Thursday which is a market day so we re-scheduled. Having seen Abydos on a non-market Wednesday I am really glad we didn't go on Thursday! However, seeing Abydos was really interesting. It is a very busy town and village. We ate at a local home that caters to tourist trips and had a nice meal and picked up some freshly sweet potatoes from a road truck oven. At Abydos we had an tourist police escort for some of the trip.
The Temple of Set I is older than Dendera but looks more modern because, after the ruined walls that lead to the first court, the twelve rectangular columns on the entry façade are reminiscent of the Temple of Hatshepsut. Up close you can see the carvings on the the pillars and the walls behind. There used to be seven doorways but they have been bricked up. Beyond that is a roofed hypostyle hall and beyond that another roofed hypostyle hall (both with rounded columns) before you can access the seven sanctuaries for the gods: Horus, Isis, Osiris, Amun-Ra, Ra-Horakhty, Ptah and Seti. Through the Osiris sanctuary you can visit some inner chambers. Breaking the usual symmetry of a square there is a section to the left at the rear with more chambers and galleries. The Gallery of Kings lists the pharaohs (edited of course!). I found a head torch handy as some areas are a bit dark. From the rear you can see down into the Osireion but most of it is underground. Unfortunately it is off-limits for tourists.
Abydos is even less crowded than Dendera and was a wonderful temple with multiple chambers to explore. I found having one room dedicated to each god made for interesting comparisons. I do not regret the time it took to get there.

The Temple of King Seti the 1st in Abydos is one of the most amazing and most beautiful ancient Egyptian temples.
It dates back to the era of King Seti the 1st and has been completed by his son and successor King Ramses the 2nd.
It is located in of the holiest spots in ancient Egypt which is believed to be the grave of the ancient Egyptian Diety Osiris ("Osireon").
The colors are vivid and the carvings are indescribable.
This is a must see location for any traveller passionate in ancient Egyptian history.

The temple of Sethos I is really beautiful and very much worthwile the time and effort to get here from Luxor. The reliefs are so detailled and beautiful, and some are very unique. The "Abydos list" who lists almost all pharaos up to Sethos I is really important for historicans. However, the "uncomfortable" pharaos were left out -- so Hatschepsut, Amenophis III / Echnaton and Tut Anch Amun are missing :-(.

The Temple of Seti I is located in Abydos which is about 2.5 hours from Luxor by car. It's very well preserved with magnificent bas-reliefs and paintings in the sanctuaries. The most famous attractions there are the Abydos Pharaoh List and the Helicopter Hieroglyphs. The former is not hard to locate, it's on the wall of a narrow corridor to the left of the second Hypostyle Hall. The Helicopter stone is part of the ceiling in the first Hypostyle Hall. You have to ask an attendant to point you in the right direction
