We hired two bikes off Corfu Bicycles for 6 days in early June 2022. We arranged the hire online before travelling to Greece. We had the option of Road, Mountain, or Hybrid, and we chose hybrid. We paid €204. This included €72 for each bicycle and €60 for delivery to our accommodation.
The extremely friendly Vasilis arrived promptly at our villa on the appointed time and day. He produced two bikes. They were hybrids with 700c wheels. I estimate they were about 20 years old because the paintwork was faded, and there were old-fashioned features such as:
• Vee brakes instead of disc brakes
• 15mm nuts on the wheels instead of quick-release axels.
The chains were clean and dry: not rusty, but dusty. The gears were 3-speed in front, and 7 speed rear, giving 21 speeds. There was a prop stand. The brakes had fresh cables and pads and were well adjusted.
Vasilis lent us a small rucksack with accessories including
• 2 helmets
• 2 spare 700 x 35 tubes
• 2 tyre levers
• 1 spanner (15mm)
• 1 hand pump
• 1 aerosol tyre inflation tin
• 1 lock
I asked for a multi-tool with Allen keys, but he said we did not need one as the saddle adjustment was quick-release.
Vasilis gave us his mobile number and drove off. We went for a ride shortly after. I quickly noticed a problem. My free-wheel was not working properly. When coasting and pedalling backwards, the freewheel did not freely rotate, causing the chain to swing left and right. At one point it jumped off the cassette and jammed into the frame. I had to pull the chain out with my fingers. We phoned Vasilis and he said he would be there quickly. We only had to wait 15 minutes and he showed up. He said it was a job for his technician and loaded the bike into his van and took me with him to a bike shop 4.5 km away. My companion had to follow the van on his bike.
In the bike shop, they quickly diagnosed the problem and fitted a new cassette. We had no further problems that day.
The next day we went on a longer bike ride. We went along the east coast to Benitses, then turned inland towards the west coast. This involved some steep climbing up to about 150m, which was quite tough in the heat. At one point my chain slipped off the smallest rear cogwheel and the smallest front cogwheel. I got dirty fingers pulling the chain back, but without a screwdriver, I could not adjust the limit screws on the derailleurs. After that I changed gear more carefully. The gearing was too high for the steep climbs, as a third friend on an MTB had lower gears and found climbing easier.
The next day we ascended Mount Pantokrator (906m) the highest peak on Corfu. It was 25km from our villa. The bikes handled the ascent well, as the road is so bendy that it does not get very steep. The descent went well as the brakes were well adjusted.
The next day we went to the Greek Mainland by ferry and had a problem-free day.
The next day we cycled to Paleokastritsa on the west coast. After a swim and a meal, there was a puncture in one rear wheel. We turned the bike upside down to remove the rear wheel and about 2 litres of rusty water gushed out of the frame from the headset and seat post. The bike must have been stored outside in the rain all winter. Now we know why that bike was heavy.
We found a tiny hole in the tube and fitted one of the spare tubes. This tube turned out also to be punctured, despite being brand-new in its packaging. We used the second supplied tube, which did not leak. When we came to inflate, the hand pump was ineffective because it lacked an outer fitting which grips the valve stem. It took two of us to push the pump tight against the valve stem whilst pumping air in. We could not get it properly inflated, but it was enough to get home on.
We considered using the aerosol inflating can. But we’d never used one before, and the instructions in 4 languages were so small as to be illegible. We decided not to risk using it.
When we got home, our landlady lent us a floor pump with a pressure gauge and we found the tyre we had tried to inflate was only 38 P.S.I., instead of the recommended 75 P.S.I.
On the final day, Vasilis contacted us in the early morning and said he would be there at 6 pm. He turned up at the appointed time and retrieved his bikes and accessories.
My verdict on Corfu for cycling:
The main roads were rather busy, so we took the back roads as much as possible. We navigated by Google Maps. These are very undulating, very steep, and often gravel tracks. But we saw beautiful remote places that few people ever visit. It was very hot, so we started before dawn to avoid the heat.
Verdict on Corfu Cycles:
If we were doing this again, what would we do differently?
• Hire in person at a bike shop much closer to our villa. This would have given us the chance to pick the best bikes instead of the old ones delivered to us. I would have insisted on quick-release axels.
• For Corfu’s road conditions, I should have chosen a mountain bike instead of a hybrid.
• Insist bikes were washed, and the chain lubricated.
• I would ask Vasilis to supply better tools, including
o A Multi-tool with screwdrivers and Allen keys.
o A puncture repair kit
o Proper replacement tubes with no holes
o Two multi-hole barbell spanners
o A fully functional hand pump
* Also I'd like a floor pump with a pressure gauge so we could top up the tyre pressure each morning before setting off.

There are several ways to see Corfu, but this personal bike tour (about 10 miles, 3.5 hours) was the best! Vasilis' communication via email and WhatsApp was great. He met us at the cruise port with the bikes. We saw all the major sites (Old fortress, the Vlacherna Monastery, Prince Philip's mansion, the coast, and the Liston main street). We also ate lunch at Cafe Kanoni with a spectacular view! It was a great way to travel and experience Corfu!

In één woord; fantastisch.

Excellent service - rang for bike and had a 29’ delivered to the hotel next day.
Hired the bike for the week and enjoyed some beautiful riding along the coast and inland around vineyards and olive groves. Some challenging climbs too if you’re up for it.
Vasilis was very helpful and nothing was too much trouble.
Would fully recommend

I rented a racing bicycle for 2 days and had a great time! You will see more of villages and nature in Corfu by biking! The owner, Vasilis, is real kind and delivers the bike in location , at your hotel or appartment and takes it from there at the end. Communication works easy and quick by Whatsapp. Thank you very much for your good service!
