Ein sehr schönes Marine Museum mit einem begehbaren Uboot.
Es gibt eine sehr schöne Gedenkstätte.
Ein Besuch ist ein absolutes Muss.
Die Stimmung schwankt zwischen Erfurcht und Freude.
Einfach schön zu wissen das so ein Denkmal erhalten wird und gepflegt wird.

Ein wirklich wunderschönes und wichtigstes Denkmal für die Marine auf der ganzen Welt! Man hat einen tollen Ausblick über die Förde und bekommt einen ganz besonderen Einblick auch in die heutige Arbeit der Marine. Besonders die Gedenkhalle hat einen ergreifenden Charm

The views are amazing from the top of the monument. It makes you appreciate the huge loss of life sustained by the navy in war. You can get a lift to the top or use the stairs (over 80m high). It was very humbling to see that the monument recognised losses from both sides.

Marine - Ehrenmal Kriegsdenkmal – dieses Denkmal war riesig. Der Eintritt war angemessen. Das Beste für mich war die Aussichtsplattform wo ich teilweise mit Aufzug fahren konnte. Die Ausstellung war auch interessant. Kostenlose Toilette.

I visited after making quite the trek, although its straightforward journey, from Hamburg on public transport and I can say it was truly worth it (see below for how I did this). The grounds are well maintained and peaceful, being near the beach and surrounded by fields and countryside at the edge of Laboe. The memorial commemorates all dead German seafarers of both world wars and their opponents.
You can purchase a ticket to visit at the counter near the entrance for 8 Euro. If visiting the submarine (U-995) at the bottom of the small hill you can get a combined ticket for 13 Euro. Quite good price. You receive a turnstile token to go through to either site. Once through to the memorial, walk up the slight incline, and you will see some of the objects commemorating the lives lost at war in a small clearing. In the centre is a propeller from the German cruiser Admiral Hipper, which survived the SWW.
From here you can visit the historical hall and memorial halls. Inside you can find lots of models and a few display boards explaining some context to the history of the wars German navy has fought from the First World War. Its quite minimalist, but that's the idea to evoke reflection and remembrance. Its a sobering, but peaceful experience.
Follow the pathways through and you come trough to the bottom of the tower. There are some vast open halls which have silhouette of different types of shipping lost at war engraved on the walls - most impressive. Finally you come through to the entrance to the stairs or lift to the tower.
The tower is 72 meters high and if wanting to take the stairs, beware there are 341 of them to climb! Naturally I took the lift - it nearly takes you to the top but there are only a few steps to walk up/down to get to the viewing platform. You are rewarded at the top with lots of open space to take non-obstructed pictures of the scenery around you. Very scenic. A great way to finish you your visit.
To get to and from here from Kiel you have two options depending on the time of year. A ferry from Kiel (which only operates during the high season, from April until mid September), which takes over an hour. Or alternatively, like I did, taking a bus. The bus took about 30 minutes to Laboe from which there is a short 10-15 minute walk along small lane and beach promenade towards the memorial. The bus only drops you off in the centre of Laboe - its very small town that has more of a seaside village vibe to it. In Kiel I'd recommend getting off and on at the bus station (directly in front of Kiel Hbf) a short 5 minute walk. Frequency of the bus was every 30 minutes.

Een prachtig ingerichte herdenkingsplek. Vanaf boven een mooi uitzicht over het landschap en de zee. Het maakt een bezoek aan Laboe zeker waard!

Construction on this memorial began in 1927, as a remembrance of the sailors killed in the first world war. It was completed in 1936 during the Nazi era. Today, it recognizes all sailors who died in both world wars on each side of these conflicts.
The views from the observation deck are quite spectacular and highly recommended. I made the dubious decision to take the stairs to the top, because I can get a little leery of heights and got a little winded by the end. But it was very safe. I did decide to take the elevator on the way down. 🙂
You can visit the memorial for 8€ or the memorial and U-995 for the combined price of 13€ for adults.
I recommend taking the ferry to Laboe from Kiel. I picked up the ferry just across from the Hauptbahnhof and it was only ~5€. It was a beautiful journey across the fjord. It is a short walk north from the ferry stop to the memorial along the strand. On the way back, I took a bus back from Laboe Village to Kiel, which was quicker.

eine sehr beindruckende anlage, die hoffentlich noch viele generationenan die grauen der kriege erinnert und mahnt neue anzufagen. preis-leistung passt, auch das u-boot sehr beeindruckend, lediglich der parkplatz ist mit vorsicht zu geniessen. wer kein kleingeld hat sollte wechseln gehen. an zwei säulen versucht mit der karte ein ticket zu lösen, kein erfolg, also parkscheibe rein wie verlangt, dafür ein ticket über 20 €. laut schreiben der stadtverwaltung war alles in ordnung und man hätte ja mit münzgeld bezahlen können(blöd nur wenn man grad keins hat) also wechseln und löhnen, die hanseaten verstehen da keinen spass!

Als Kind,sowie als Erwachsener war ich auf dem Laboer Ehrenmal.Zuletzt hatten wir Besuch aus Sachsen.Da ich als Tischler vom Marinearsenal,für diese Einrichtung einmal etwas gefertigt hatte,Bekam ich, mit meinen Gästen, freien Eintritt.Noch einmal Dankeschön.

we are visiting Kiel July 5th by cruise ship 11am leaving 9pm. Is it practical for a non german speaker to get there from our port ,visit by public transport and return well in time for our ships departure

yes, absolutely. there is a public ferry service from one side of Kieler Förde to the other (check KVG website English version for Summer timetables and prices of Ferry (SFK)). The Kiel stop is near Main Train Station, the Laboe stop is approx. 1km by foot from Marine-Ehrenmal.
Time for visiting Marine-Ehrenmal + Submarine is apprix. 1.5h+1h if you take your time. please calculate extra time waiting at entry/ticket booth (+30min) to be safe in summer season.

Not sure I understand - the Memorial is a trust site conducted by the German naval veterans association; there is accommodation in the town (best is Admiral Schipper) and there is no reservation aspect to visiting the memorial.
