‪Nice to see some historical architecture. Not able to visit the crypt when we came, so I don’t really feel that made it worth the 1h+ jeepney ride from Santa Cruz...‬

‪Nagcarlan in Laguna is popular with ghost hunters, history buffs, and adventure seekers for this reason: the dark catacombs and tight passageways that mark the town's underground cemetery. In use up until World War II, this has been well-preserved compared to other historic locations in both the province and the entire country. Wear a set of comfortable clothing and shoes, plus bring another pair to change into, because it is hot and damp inside. I came for the history and enjoyed the fairly short trek, it's brisk exercise!‬

‪An absolutely fantastic experience for anyone visiting Nagcarlan, Laguna, Philippines. This place is filled with so much history and is simply a great spectacle filled with so much history and mystery. A must-visit place for sure!‬

‪I can say that this cemetery is really unique and intriguing since it is the only underground cemetery found in the Philippines. The excellent attribute of this cemetery is its rich history. We learned that it had served as a meeting place by the Katipuneros back in 1896 and other events took place here that contributed greatly to our country's history. Furthermore, there were rumors that the crypt have secret passages leading to some places in Laguna. We were a bit dissappointed that the crypt is a bit small and there aren't so many things to do. This place is great for sidetrip when you are planning to tour around the province of Laguna.‬

‪-One of the itinerary on my son’s educational trip. The place was clean and well maintained. But the kids got bored. This is the only underground cemetery here in the Philippines.

When we went underground, it was just a very small cemetery. I expected a little too much.

Dont forget the voluntary donations before leaving the place. ‬

‪It was dull in that no real history was provided in the church by the caretaker, which would of present an expatation, but the only thing explained was pictures were prohibited. I've visited the tombs in Rome, which left me speechless, so I probably had higher expectations. ‬

‪Drive along the scenic country road and admire the lush vegetations and small fancy stores along the way. Be amazed by the unique facade surrounded by structures that will introduce you to the underground cemetery built during the Spanish era. Just imagine the brave revolutionaries and town heroes who used it as a hiding place during their struggles to fight the foreigners during the Spanish and Japanese occupations of the town.‬

‪before reviewing this place, to those who are interested going to nagcarlan cemetery, from manila board a bus to either sta cruz or lucena. to the sta cruz travellers, travel will be nearly 3 hours. board a jeep across the bus terminal that has the label liliw and nagcarlan. a provincial leisure ride will be at least 45 minutes until reaching the nagcarlan market. board a trike to nagcarlan cemetery for 10 pesos. the san pablo side has been discussed in many blogs. so i wont explain it further.

the nagcarlan cemetery is one of the oldest cemetery in the philippines and the only one UNDERGROUND cemetery in the country. it is built by the instruction of father velloc to provide the townspeople a place to rest after death. the complex is similar to paco church and park back in manila minus the underground thing. it is used by katipuneros for their war plans and even filipino guerillas' place of refuge during WW2. people might think this is similar to the complex underground tombs mazes found in movies and documentaries but manage your expectations. the underground complex is merely a SMALL ROOM beneath a small chapel with 36 niches. dimly lit small room needs higher ISOs for your camera to avoid blurs. place can be completed in less than 30 minutes. there is a small museum in the entrance by the way.

as for the rules, as of this month, photography is restricted flash and no flash by the nhcp management! so sad! you cant blame the clicky noisy high school tourists and reckless travellers who dont show proper decorums in a solemn place like a cemetery. vandalism is rampant on the site, the management should exercise proper plans for further renovations supported by the government. not much to see but another side of the long history of the country.

from manila commuting there takes at least 4 hours. 3 hours on the bus due to some traffic and stops and nearly one hour of jeepney ride passing various idyllic towns.‬

‪Our intern boss toured us here and when we arrived, I love how the arrangement of the scene and kabaong is. When we entered the basement, I felt the cold wind and it was creepy, I thought I was the only one but my kasama also experienced it.‬

‪While touring Laguna province we decided to go see the underground cemetery at Nagcarlin. It was said to have been used by Filipino conspirators against the Spanish, which I found amazing as the place echoed loudly. It was a good place to check out. Admission is free, but it is a good idea to make a donation to the ladies overseeing the place, or buy some postcards or souvenirs.‬
