Our visit could have lasted all day as there is just so much to discover about the Wicked Lord, Lord Byron the Poet and all the Sir John Byrons. Fascinating stuff. The only slight fly in the ointment was the tree that Lord Byron the poet had written an ode to (Ode to an Oak) had been removed - too old, I guess. However, they're putting a replacement in for it!

On the website, it said it was dog friendly and £3, yet we had to pay £6 and for the cafe dogs need to stay outside in the courtyard.

First time of using annual parking pass, greeted by the most charming and cheerful lady at the gate what a gem of a person. Coffee at the cafe and again lovely staff. A most pleasurable visit in the sun and a wander around the gardens

Lovely afternoon tea after visiting the Abbey. There was an Alice in Wonderland themed exhibition, opportunity to dress up, and a hunt for the kids. Also nice craft fair.
The afternoon tea in the restaurant was very well organised considering it was extremely busy. The staff work so hard to make sure everyone is looked after and are enjoying themselves. I can imagine it is VERY busy in the kitchen. The sandwiches and cakes were delicious. I think, like a lot of places, there were staff absences but the staff did so well to fill the gaps. Newstead, look after your staff, they are amazing!
Thoroughly enjoyed the day. The gardens are great too, especially the Japanese garden. Would recommend.

We came to see the Christmas display for the second year running. In terms of cost it's the cheapest country house to visit at Christmas (unless you have NT membership obviously), yet that doesn't reflect the amount of work or the effort put into the display.
The house has got a long visitor route so there is plenty to see, this year's display was completely different to last year so it keeps it interesting.

Myself, my parents and my 3 children visited on 18th October 2022.
We are frequent visitors to the Abbey and love walks around the gardens.
We were looking forward to a nice hot drink in the cafe after our walk but unfortunately it ruined our lovely day.
The hot chocolate was not hot and tasted so bad that I couldn’t drink it. After letting a staff member know, I was told that “they cannot change it just because of the taste”. I could however order a different drink but I would have to pay another £3.50 for it, which would mean that my hot drink would have cost £7 in total!
It is expensive to take 6 people for a coffee and we do see it as a treat, so it’s obviously frustrating when you’re paying so much for poor hot drinks.
But more than that, it was the attitude of the staff that was more upsetting. Rude, unfriendly and absolute zero effort made to resolve the situation of an unhappy customer. They simply didn’t care.
The 2 customers next to us also said their coffee was cold but didn’t even approach the staff to tell them as they had heard the rude response that we had got from them.
I would suggest some customer focussed training for all that were working in the cafe on the afternoon of the 18th.
We will return to the Abbey but never the coffee shop again. Take a flask people!

Yesterday myself and 2 friends popped in for a coffee at the coffee shop. When we had ordered our drinks we were greeted by the most rude unprofessional staff member I have ever met. Her attitude was appalling ,,, She told us they didn’t accept cash!!! There was no signs up telling customers this and she then huffed and puffed about accepting cash… Cash is legal tender and you cannot discriminate against the customer.
I suggest you inform customers about not accepting cash and employee someone who smiles.

Amazing. Tour by Barry was excellent. So informative. Guides clearly love working there. Really interesting place. Café excellent. Very good for vegans. Two cake options, lovely vegan hot food too. Would recommend a season ticket.

Hi,
My wife and I, together with a friend, visited Newstead Abbey gardens earlier this week after reading the information on your website where it states that “the garden walk is suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooter and prams”. We downloaded a copy of the map of the gardens to use as a guide. I am disabled and use a mobility scooter whilst my wife, recently out of hospital, is able to walk but not long distances.
I should like to provide you with the following feedback. Firstly, the map fails to make clear which paths are and which paths are not suitable for those persons on mobility scooters. I went down a number of paths only to encounter steps which meant I had to turn around, with some difficulty, and find an alternative route. Why don’t you indicate on the map which paths are suitable for mobility scooters, wheelchairs etc? Secondly, with the help of the map, we had planned a circular route through the gardens starting and ending in the disabled car park. However, after leaving 10 (the Sub-tropical Garden) and entering 11 (the Great Garden), it was clear to me that there was no access from there (or anywhere else for that matter) allowing access for those on mobility scooters to the French and Spanish Gardens (12 & 13) or Boatswain’s Monument (14). I had no alternative but to retrace my “steps” and return to the disabled carpark via the path skirting the café. My wife and our friend continued their tour visiting the French and Spanish Gardens and Boatswain’s Monument with the intention of finally walking through the Monks Garden (16) and returning to the disabled carpark by the doorway clearly marked on the map we were following. When they reached this doorway, it was locked, as were the metal gates in the surviving west façade of the Priory. This meant my wife had to endure a lengthy walk retracing her steps in order to get back to the car by the path that skirts the toilets and café. What is the point of showing on your route map a doorway that is not in use?
I would put it to you that this is wholly unacceptable and spoilt what would otherwise have been a pleasurable two hour visit.

When I went (before Coronavirus) there was someone on the gate to take your money. Don't know whether that's still the case.

Could me and my friend ride our horses into newstead abbey or are the banned. I know some places don't allow them. We would be coming from newstead down the lane and coming out near the lake and waterfall part.

I have never seen any or anything to say horses have been round as in Horse manure or seen horses.Perhaps because they are public gardens highly unlikely. But it would be worth contacting them to make sure this is the case.
Is it dog friendly?

Dog friendly. When you walk into the gardens - dogs must be on a lead. In the grounds near the car park & cricket ground areas outside the gardens dogs can be off the lead. Cafe does not allow dogs inside.

Yes, and a wonderful place yo walk round. There are alot of birds so keeping you dog on a lead is a good idea.

Good afternoon the entry fee for entry to the park and to park your car is £6
If you are on foot or a cyclist it will cost you £1 to enter the park.
Hope that helps
