Stunning gardens, lake, riverside etc. Much much larger than we were expecting. And a cafe too! Parking was a bit of a problem....but it was Mothers Day after all!

We were staying close by at Mount Wolseley and saw these gardens on the map and seeing as it was a fair October day decided to have a look at them. What a pleasant surprise! Surrounded by mature woodlands and shrubs the well kept lawns, herbaceous borders and flower beds were a tonic to look at. The ruined house provides the backdrop and the land falls to a large lake with snaking lakeside paths and a woodland trail. Right in the middle is a lovely little cafe and an incredibly well-stocked garden centre. And entrance is free of charge as the site is run by Ireland's Office of Public Works (a bit like the UK's National Trust). There's plenty of car parking for which there is a nominal charge. We visit Ireland frequently and we'll be sure to return and enjoy the gardens in the spring and summer.

Altamont Gardens is a definite must see. The Gardens are just amazing & to walk around is so relaxing. Two special times to visit during the year are Snowdrop week in February - such a selection of snowdrops a feast to the eyes & Rose week in June. A walk around the lake and lovely places to sit. And then a visit to the Garden centre - Robert Miller is an expert plants person & gives great advice - and of course stop & have a coffee & cake

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Parking was reasonable at 2 euro. Entry was free. Beautiful walk around the grounds. We had a lovely lunch in the cafe. Pity to see the house boarded up but hopefully it will be open in time and we will revisit.

We visited Altamont Gardens today with our toddler and had a wonderful time ambling around the Lake Route walk. We saw ducks, ducklings and plenty of beautiful flowers and trees along the way. There is a longer River route walk but that isn’t suitable for buggies. Although the place is apparently becoming more popular, it was very quiet while we were there and made it feel as though it was our own secret garden. There is a charming café in the walled garden and a small garden centre to purchase plants from. The car park is €2 and entry is free. I’d highly recommend a visit to Altamont Gardens. It is a 15 minute drive if coming from Mount Wolseley hotel.

Beautiful gardens with a profusion of plants and trees, plus a walk through the woods to the River Slaney. I would be interested to visit the house if and when it is restored. Good value for the parking fee of €2.

This is well worth a visit for a few hours if the weather suits. There is a cafe and a garden centre here. The plants and trees are lovely and there are very nice well marked walks amongst them. The longer walk goes down to the River Slaney and back into Altamont and takes about three quarters of an hour. Do visit if you are in the area. Another well managed attraction from the Office of Public Works (OPW).

Excellent gardens and walking experience. Free to visit (€2 for parking) and nice cafe and garden centre. Some parts of the walk, near bog, should be done with care and sturdy footwear.

This place didn't come up in any of the research we did of what to do in Carlow. Can't fathom who. We only went after it was recommended by the guy in the desk in mount wolesley. We ended up spending over three hours roaming the grounds amazed. We are a family of four, a four year old and a two year old, we loved it! We played so many game on the walk, finding flowers of certain colours, finding ducks, a gruffalo hunt etc. This place is class, just like all of the opw sites we've visited.

Can I go there by train from.Dublin? Or bus?

By bus. But you can only get to Tullow town which is the closest stop. You will need to get a cab from there. There are just two daily bus services from Dublin. There are more train services but you will have to get a cab from a greater distance.

Unfortunately not. The path's are quite narrow and the shrubbery can grow onto the path.
But it is a beautiful and tranquil place

Hi, Pat. What would you like to know about this attraction?
I was just looking at the reviews. Altamount Gardens are just beautiful and I go there as often as I can. Next visit will be to see the bluebells !
I don't know how MIss. North could bear the thought of having to depart from Altamount and this World.. I can only imagine Miss North looking out the back window of her home, and looking down on the gardens and lake, or sitting on her balcony listening to the wildlife calling and singing as the Sun was setting. To me it was almost like visiting heaven on earth !
God Bless Miss North for allowing us to share her garden paradise.

Can I take my dog with me to Altamont Garden ?

Hi Joanna, these gardens are truly a magnificent place to bring family and friends but I do not think dogs are allowed. It is down to the fact that these gardens are kept as close as possible to the rural and natural setting and the website does say no dogs allowed except Guide Dogs….hope this helps??
What river runs through the garden's
