Un lugar único en Costa Rica. Debe de conocerlo.. Maravilloso.

Our hotel arranged for a well informed young man named, Jaime who accompanied us on the combination tour of the "hanging bridges" and volcanoe hike. He was so knowledgeable and really made our trip very worthwhile. He noticed everything in the rainforest and gave us a great education about the animals, plants and Costa Rican life!

My wife and I visited Costa Rica for one month this past February.
We stayed for almost a week in each location...
Arenal, Quepos(2 days), Osa, Uvita, and Tamarindo.
We went for the warmth and sunshine. CR did not disappoint us with the weather.
The food was good and at times great...although at USA prices.
In fact, it seems like the US has exported its inflation to CR. Values for the dollar are few.
The CR people seemed genuinely friendly, but here's the rub. Everywhere we went the sense of possible theft was disconcerting. It kept a "chill" on the whole trip. For example, many homes had bars on the windows and barbed wire fencing.
Walmart had barbed wire fencing and armed guards with machine guns or rifles. So did the mall at Escazu.
In fact, many stores and places had security guards, gates, guards with guns, and signs
warning of possible theft.
It seemed like visitors are welcome targets to scam, steal or take ' unsuspecting advantage of '...and CR wants to let you know. Police presence is light and seemingly, ineffectual.
We were told by a local expat in Playa Grande that Costa Rica is not the place that it used to be. All the reasons that you might come to expect in Costa Rica have now gone.
It's now an unfriendly place and if you own a home you can expect a home invasion for sure.
IMO, there is a such a disparity of income between a large lower-middle class and the rich, that the majority of the internet-savvy, young people are discontent and vindictive.
I would also include young, street-savvy foreigners who visit and live here as well.
The government may have misguided policies that exacerbate these problems.
This is a developing country with much natural beauty but is far from the paradise that the sound bite "pura vida" attempts to capture. Pura vida is being reduced to a stale marketing concept that has less and less reality to back it up.
We sincerely hope that CR can improve its economy and enact rules of law that will welcome it into the world of civil and healthy societies.

If you want to see AND UNDERSTAND the amazing nature that is all around you in Costa Rica, then Javier is your greatest discovery! We had several guides during our 8 day stay in Costa Rica, and all of them were good, but Javier was by far our favorite! His biology background gives him great insight into the plant and animal life and he is very easy to learn from. He designed for us a nocturnal tour that was awesome! He has an amazing ability to spot wildlife, and he seems to know everything about the country. He is very friendly and his English is easy to understand and enjoy. We would highly recommend him to anyone seeking to see amazing sights in Costa Rica.

On our Princess Cruise through the Panama Canal we took an excursion upon arriving in Limon, Costa Rica - Highlights of San Jose with Lunch. Although the bus trip from Limon to San Jose was over two hours the trip was wonderful. We cut trhough the lush mountains of Braulio National Park and many interesting sights before arriving at our final destination. We visited the National Museum. Metropolitan Cathedral, and the famous National Theater. Our tour guide, Wilhelm. was great. He was so knowledgeable and we certainly learned all about Costa Rica's culture and history. Not to leave out the wonderful lunch at a charming restaurant with Costa Rican dishes. This is truely an excursion not to miss.

Javier is an AMAZING tour guide. He is extremely knowledgeable about Costa Rica. This website was created by him. I definately recommend checking it out. He has a background in biology and is able to spot animals from almost anywhere.

I had a wonderful time celebrating my birthday this year doing a tour with Javier! He was very passionate about his work and nature and made the tour very interesting and fun. It was a very positive experience for everyone in our group and we really enjoyed exploring Costa Rica with a guide that was very knowledgeable. I can't wait to go back to Costa Rica!!

We are going to Costa Rica this August, we booked all our hotels already through an agency called "Costa Rican Treasures" , any one have used them? What was your experience with their services. We didn't book any tours yet.
Any recommendation on tours to take? Something not too touristy and off the beaten path?
Thank you,
Ana G.
