La communication avec Andrew est excellente.
Le bateau, le matériel photo, la prestation, les conseils, le feeling, tout est parfait !!
J'ai vraiment adoré cette expédition photo, une immersion au cœur du lac Gatun, de sa Jungle.

Hi Mara
It is wonderful to have kids on the boat so that at an early age they can get an appreciation for and interest in nature. Look forward to seeing you again shortly.

First time visiting Panama City and my wife wanted to see the Panama Canal. As for me an avid fisherman I want to do some fishing in Panama. I came across 9 North Panama when I was researching for a fishing charter in Panama. The uniqueness of fishing trip 9 North offer on the Panama Canal immediately caught my attention. I reached out to Andrew owner to inquire about the trip. He responded quickly and answered all my questions promptly. I’m so glad we made the decision to do this trip with Andrew. His knowledge about the rainforest, eco system, the wild animals, etc is really impressive. He took his time to explain everything and show us some of the wild animals in the rainforest. I have done fishing in many places and this fishing trip provided an absolutely amazing experience. We else can you fish in one of the seven wonders of the world, See wild animals like crocodiles and monkeys in their natural habitat, ride next to huge cruise and large cargo ships in Panama Canal while you are fishing? I also want to mention about how comfortable and unique the boat is. It’s custom made for photography with a spacious platform and comfortable swift chairs. Very comfortable for fishing as well. We caught many peacock bass on this trip and they were beautiful. Andrew also provided a delicious homemade picnic style lunch on the banks and that was a lovely experience as well. If you are in Panama City you must do this trip. I want to thank Andrew for such amazing experience. This fishing trip is the highlight of our trip to Panama City. Loved!

Hello Tak
Thank you for your very kind words. I am extremely fortunate to live in Panama and enjoy the amazing Gatun Lake (through which the Panama Canal passes). Every day on the lake is a new and wonderful experience for me.
Tight lines!

Who would believe that we would catch Snook in a fresh water lake. But we do. I expect they come up through the locks?

Me and my fiance did this tour a few months ago and it was perfect. We had been in Panama City, Santa Catalina and even San Blas (a real paradise) and had one final day to spend before going back home. We wanted to see Monkey Island so we chose this tour witth 9 North and it was the perfect ending to our trip. We saw monkeys, crocodiles, sloths, different birds, fish and so much nature. Andrew is just an excellent guide who not only has a great knowledge about the place as you can also feel that he loves his job and he respects nature! That was one of the key points that made this tour 5 stars for us, we felt that the whole experience respected the ecosystem around us. Highly recommended!

What a spectacular day it was! The day started with Andrew greeting us - my husband, my 88 year old mother (yes, he took our reservation knowing this), and me - at the dock with a beautiful smile. And as the trip progressed, I could see his smile was genuine; he truly loves to share the beauty of the rain forest with everyone.
The rain forest is magnificent; that is a given. I could feel it was filled with lives. However, finding animals that blend right into the soundings is impossible. Exactly 100% of animals we saw was pointed out by Andrew. The first one was only a few minutes into the trip. He stopped the boat and told us there is a crocodile on the edge of the water under a tree. It was a chill in my spine moment; I was staring at a wild crocodile!
As we cruise the lake, Andrew pointed out many birds, iguanas, turtles, and monkeys. The first monkey we encountered was a loner. He was as curious about us as we were about him. A little by little he came closer and closer to the boat, jumping between branches. The sight made my mother so emotional, she was in tears.
I had never worked with DSLR cameras or telephoto lens before. I was keep going out of focus at beginning. I was happy just seeing the animals with my own eyes. However, Andrew did not give up on me; he kept saying we would get this. I finally started finding animals through the camera. Now at home I am pulling up beautiful pictures I took, remembering how wonderful time we had.

Hi Chiori
We were so pleased to have your elderly, but very sprightly mother onboard. So often elderly persons don't get the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities. Our stable boat with easy access is very suitable for both the elderly and persons with mobility constraints. Our captains are not only excellent wildlife spotters, but are also very careful drivers so that you have a comfortable boat ride.
All the best, Andrew

Andrew was a fabulous guide and the boat with its rigging and cameras was as good as it gets. After a short tutorial on the equipment and a short ride to the islands, Andrew found many animals and birds for us to photograph and gave great detail on each. At the same time, he provided positive feedback and instruction on the use of the camera he provided. Time flew by. When we returned, Andrew provided chips with our pictures to each one of us. In addition, a few days later he provided a slide show and video compised of pictures we took on the safari. One of our group said this was the highlight of our two weeks in Costa Rica and Panama and on Windstar. I heartily agree. Andrew is the best and a must do activity while in Panama.

The experience with Andrew was unique and unparalleled. For starters, Andrew’s boat is equipped with specialized chairs and camera mounts that make it remarkably easy to maneuver to any angle to capture the best shots. Additionally, the DSLR cameras he provides are fitted with enormous zoom lenses that allow you to capture a level of detail I never could with my own digital camera or iPhone. I am far from a skilled photographer, but the photos I took with Andrew were just phenomenal.
My wife and I opted for the early tour — leaving at 6:30 AM. It kept us out of the midday sun and allowed us access to much of the wildlife we would likely not have seen later in the day. This was a very good choice (it helped that we were staying 5 min away in Gamboa, however...)
Next is perhaps the most important thing to recognize: there are many, many tour operators taking boats of people out to “Monkey Island” in Gatun Lake. What’s essential to realize is that there is no specific “Monkey Island.” Instead, it’s a collection of many islands on the lake where one may see a collection of birds, butterflies, iguanas, and yes, a FEW monkeys. But these are not islands teeming with frolicking primates. There may be 2 or 4 monkeys on a particular island. And after being fed by the um-teenth tour boat, the monkeys may not even make themselves visible. These other tours seem to do “monkey drive bys” rather than pausing to discuss the primates, the habitat, and more.
With Andrew, we took our time. We were able to see 3 different types of monkeys — a Tamarin, a White-Faced Capuchin, and a Howler — who came unusually close for us to photograph. We also saw an assortment of birds, looked for crocs, and photographed numerous iguanas.
Over the 3-4 hours we spent together, we learned a good deal about digital photography; but we also learned about the species we observed; about conservation; about habitat loss; about Panama; and so much more.
We boated to a shady spot on the lake to drink coffee and discuss the convergence of different ecosystems and how that impacts biodiversity. Besides the delicious coffee, he brought snacks, as well (which happened to be kosher — a real bonus for us!)
The morning was a really special one. It focused on depth over breadth and really allowed for an unusually special experience that I don’t think I could have replicated elsewhere.

This was the highlight of our trip! We saw so many interesting creatures, including many species of bird, as well as iguanas, monkeys, bats, a turtle, and many more. Andrew's knowledge of the rainforest - and best spots to find wildlife - is incredible. I would recommend this trip to anyone, you won't regret it!

Thank you Hannah. We had a most enjoyable trip with you. The unseasonal weather was a challenge and fortunately we only had a bit of rain at the end of the tour. Look forward to seeing you in Panama again.

The tour was amazing! Andrew, the owner, is absolutely brilliant. He explains everything in detail - from photography to nature. I never felt rushed and had time to concentrate on taking some good shots with the camera. The equipment - boat as well as camera and lens - is in excellent condition! What I really appreciated was the fact that Andrew respects the animals and their habitat. Even if you are not into photography, I would certainly recommend the tour to see Panamas wildlife.

Hello Isa.B
Thank you for your review. I had a look through you photos and you got some stunning shots of the iguanas pairing up. This is an interesting phase in the forest as it transitions from the wet to dry season, and the animals start their breeding cycle.
We had a lot of fun with you on the boat and you are very welcome to join us again, hopefully soon!
Travel safe
Kind regards, Andrew

Hi-
We are planning to travel to Panama in early January, and absolutely plan to take the photography tour on the Gatun. Of the three times a day the tour is offered, which do you think gives us the best opportunity to see the amazing wildlife? Thanks!

Hello Eric
Thank you for your inquiry.
In January we should be well into the dry season.
I prefer the 6:30am tour, as we are usually the first boat onto the lake, and can get to see the monkeys before they are feed bananas, sweets, biscuits and whatever by the other boats. The downside of the early morning tour is that is it is overcast, our 150-600mm lenses are light hungry, so we need to play around with the settings a lot more.
Early in the morning we also see Crocs basking in the sun. The early tour is also the coolest, as it gets hot on the lake later on!
The 10:30am tour is ideal for those on vacation and don't have the desire to be up so early. On this tour we alter our routes to avoid the other tour boats on the water. We tend to see more birds at this time, and in January there is a lot of courting going on.
The 2:00pm is the tour that we are most often surprised with. The afternoons can be windy, so again we find sheltered inlets away from the other boats. The rare or uncommon birds that we have found are usually on the afternoon tour.
On all the tours we will see monkeys as there are several 'monkey' islands. I would like to mention that we are in one of the most biodiverse hotspots on the planet. One needs to not only focus on the animals, but also embrace this incredible plant habitat. In January there should be a lot of plants in flower, and with patience we will see a variety of pollinators.
In short each tour has its merits, the reason why we run them.
I hope that is of help
Kind regards, Andrew
