Many people would be familiar with the rabbit proof fence in WA as a result of the film. This is a monument to a similar endeavour to keep wild dogs out of the grazing country.
Well worth a 5 minute stop if you are doing the silo trail.

This unusual monument is on the Calder Highway and commemorates the construction of the dog-netting fence. The fence stretched approximately 325 kilometres from Tyntynder on the Murray River to the South Australian border.
It is also known as a 'Rabbit Proof Fence'.

A bit unexpected but having seen this it reminded me of the film "Rabbit Proof Fence". Love the country but it does have a dark complicated past.

Just past the Nulawill Silo Art heading north is this monument to a time long gone when the country was much different. Worth a quick stop

We were driving from Wycheproof towards Culgoa when we saw a 'monument' sign ahead. There was no indication of what that monument was... but my father still pulled over because he has worked out that I am interested in all things 'history'.
So what's here? A cairn commemorates the construction of the dog-netting fence which crossed the highway at this point. Part of the fence is included with the memorial. The fence was erected in 1884.
The fence stretched approximately 325 kilometres from Tyntynder on the Murray River to the South Australian border. The Victorian government paid for the fence.
That's a mighty long fence to build to keep dogs out. The fence was designed to stop the spread of rabbits to the north and the wild dogs from spreading south. The 36th parallel was selected for the location of the fence because it marked a weather line. Evidently it was meant to rain more on the south side of the fence.
The fence was six feet high with rabbit mesh at the bottom buried into the ground. Above the mesh was larger mesh and at the top there were strands of barbed wire.
I will say that the monument is hidden by scrub if you are driving, so you really need to keep an eye out for the corner of the Calder Highway and Dognetting Fence.
