If you haven’t visited a Buddhist monastery before then you can come here but if you have visited any other monastery, then you can skip this one. The place has a huge meditation hall which you can enter with no shoes. Deposit shoes at the counter below the flight of stairs which you have to climb to enter the hall. The place is visited by not tourists to Dehradun so be prepared for a lot of crowd especially on weekends. The place does have awesome momos but only veg so give it a try. You can also shop for the usual Buddhist knick knacks was souvenir for friends back home.

The Mindrolling Monastery in Dehradun is a Buddhist monastery of the Nyingma school of Buddhism. There’s an impressive 35 metre high gilded statue of a standing Buddha. There’s also several stupas which you can climb up to get a birds eye view of the whole complex. The monastery is outside of the centre of Dehradun, though straightforward with the local transport.

Its very peaceful and the lawns are so well maintained. The best part is the life lessons written on boards all along the path to the main temple.

Mindrolling monastery is located in Clement Town in Dehradun. It was built by Guru Rinpoche in 1960s to promote Buddhist culture. The World Peace stupa at Mindrolling monastery is the largest stupa in the world. In the complex, is a huge statue of Guru Rinpoche and Lord Buddha. The carvings and design of the monastery and the statues is very colorful. The entire temple complex is clean and well maintained. The gardens are well manicured with lots of flowering plants. There is no entrance fee to visit Mindrolling monastery. The area is very peaceful and calming. Must visit if you are in Dehradun. The monastery top is visible from the flyover itself, while coming to the monastery. The place has been amazingly maintained. Melody bells ringing act like a very peaceful music. The local people present there for the prayers are extremely helpful and ready to answer any questions/ doubts you would have. The main monastery is completely silent and hence, a refreshing fragrance and feeling altogether.
It is open from 10am-pm, and they charge just Rs. 3 per shoe pair if you wish to keep them in lockers.

The scale of this place was unexpected: the main stupa is huge - apparently the largest in the world - and the whole complex is about 2 acres. Mindrolling is an offshoot of the original Mindrolling in Tibet, damaged during and after the revolt against the Communist Chinese in 1959, so it is relatively modern, but none the worse for that, aesthetically. Many Tibetan Buddhists have sought refuge in India.
Everything is immaculate including the lawns, and although there are fierce signs about not walking on the grass or eating or displaying public affection, there is a cafe area at one end where things are a little more relaxed! We didn't look at the shop, but apparently they sometimes have nice Tibetan jewellery.
At the entrance there is a series of information boards which summarise well the symbolism of the various levels and elements of the stupa, and the philosophy of Buddhism, which was very welcome. It's a quiet place, backing into sal forest along one side, and certainly a place one could come and think peacefully.
There are little Tibetan eateries in the village on one side: very basic and can't comment on quality, but no doubt they do a mean momo.

Recently discovered this place through search on internet. Not very popular otherwise. I find it spectacular, well managed and a great place to spend quality time with Family. Totally recommended.

This Monastery in conjunction with Budhha temple is a complete package for a great spiritual experience. Lush green surrounding adds to its beauty. Don't forget to have a savoring tea at the cafe inside Buddha temple.

Hi,
I wanted to know what are timings when the monastery is open from morning to evening or there are definite hours. Also how far it would be from Rajpur road.

I don't think there are any particular timings. I went thrice. One at 6 in the evening, then 8 in the morning and then 12 in the noon.
It will take about half hour to reach there from Rajpura Road
couldn't find it in google map, where it is exactly located??
