We visited Lakhamandal on our way to Char Dham yatra in Oct last year. It is located on the Mussorie to Barkot/Yamunotri road in Dehradun district of Uttarakhand. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is on a height but can be reached by car up to a point and then few minutes walk upwards, Yamuna river flows along the Lakhamandal village. We were informed that Pandavas visited this place on their serach of Lord Shiva to ascend to heaven and worshiped Lord Shiva by making more than a lakh Shivaling from which the name Lakhamandal. The temple has excellent view of the mountains and must visit for Char Dham pilgrims. It is advised to take help of a guide to know the surrounding places and is easily available.

We, a group of five adults, got to know about this religious place and became interested to visit. The place was quite far from our Chakrata hotel. But when we reached finally, we were amazed to see the beauty and to learn the history of this place. It is a must visit site....
Though it was a long drive but it was a scenic drive.

Lakhamandal Temple is 35 km from Chakrata and is located on Gangotri Yamunotri Road in the Jaunsar-Bawar region. The Lakhamandal Temple, is constructed in ancient Nagara style of North Indian architecture. Lakhamandal temple is Lord Shiva’s abode in mountains and is estimated to be constructed circa 12th to 13th century. The name came from “Lakha” that means several thousand and “Mandal” that refers to Shivalinga. Apparently Archaeological Survey of India (“ASI”) has found several Shivalingas during excavation in nearby areas. These Shivalingas are in various sizes – small medium and big. One can have a look at these Shivalingas in the temple premises of Lakhamandal.
The chief priest at the temple told us several legends about the temple and the mythology attached to it. There are two beautiful statues of gatekeepers who apparently are Manav (man) and Danav (demon) guarding the temple. The temple also relates back to the story of Lakshagriha (The House of Lacquer) in Mahabharat. Legend has it that this is the area where Kauravas conspired to kill Pandavas by burning them alive.
The sanctum sanctorum of the Lakhamandal temple holds many rare idols of Indian Gods. Most of these are Shiva, Parvati and their family. We spent a good couple of hours at Lakhamandal Temple looking at these beautiful figurines.
Another interesting thing at Lakhamandal temple is a unique Shivalinga installed outside the main temple. The USP of this Shivalinga is that it becomes reflective, like a mirror, after water is poured on it.

This place has a unique vibe, which cant be described but can only be felt. This place is calm, peaceful and serene. As you look at numerous shiv lingas, architecture of the temple, dev danav idols, etc, it seems as if the temple has many mysterious untold stories. As you leave this place you'll be filled with awe. And as this site has been acknowledged by the archaelogical survey of India, it assures you even more that this was the exact place where a significant Mahabharata event took place. I would love to visit this place again if I'm fortunate enough.
PS- I got my class 12 board result when I was here, so I can never forget this place :)

This temple is very ancient and beautiful .It is related to PANDAV's and their lakshagrah event. There are many 'shivlingas ' in the temple premises. There are two idols of dev danav which are said to have powers to make dead alive. there is shivlinga established by YUDHISTIR. there is a shivlinga which shows reflection when we do 'JALABHISHEKA'.
The site is under control of archaeological survey of India and has the remainants of lakshagrah .
There is an old man who is a guide and he is very co-operative and provides details about the place.

I'm so glad I went and saw this Temple.... it was so amazing got to see so many sivlings at one time and the history of the temple is really fantastic ...I had such divine darshan of Shiv ji we also did Pooja of The shivling the Panditji over there was really nice and explained us everything very beautifully with patience... I am on a wheelchair and there are a lot of steps that I had to climb but then there was another way that the kids of the Pandit Ji and other kids of the place over there walked with me all through that place and helped me through some steep climbs on the chair.... all in all it was such a beautiful experience because I could go in there and enjoy the beauty and the divinity of the temple and without any trouble ....since I was on automatic chair it was little heavy to pick up the chair when there were bumpy stones but if you are on a manual wheelchair people can easily lift you and put you through those big stones

The hills around protect this place, it must have been wooded, a great place to escape. The Pandava brothers and their mother stayed in the mansion built of lacquer by their step-brother who intended to harm them.
However, they escaped through a tunnel which can be seen now. There are many such tunnels on the hill - top and one below.
The temple complex is rich with statues, carved stones and the main temple.

It was a hiding place for pandaws. You must visit this place., You can see the ancient and beautyful stone carving . There is a shivling when you will pour the water on shivling it does work as a mirror and you see yourself very clearly.

I visited this place on my way to yamunotri from mussoorie. Need to take diversion of 5 kms to reach this place. An ancient shiva temple belongs to the time of pandavas. Due to heavy wind and rain i dint able to explore it more. But this place need some maintenance and conservation. This place is a rich source of history.

The driver told about this property. Ancient time temple- hiding place for Pandava. There are lots of Shivlings excavated recently by Archaeological Survey of India. There are lots of statues and a Shivling made up of stone may be granite on which one can see their reflection when abhishek with water is done.
