‪This Wildlife sanctuary is at Bargarh district of Odisha. This 353 sq km sanctuary is situated adjacent to the huge water body of Hirakud reservoir. It is learnt that the sanctuary is the home over 40 species of mammals, 234 species of birds, 41 species of reptiles, 12 species of amphibians, 42 species of fishes, 85 species of butterflies and 38 species of spiders.
In order to enjoy the beautiful scene of the full water body, it is suggested to visit the place in September or October. The cottages are beautiful, neat and clean. Food is tasty. It is an excellent place for the weekend trip with family and/ or friends. It is better to hire a vehicle from Sambalpur.‬

‪Debrigarh is 21kms from burla. The driving route from Hirakud Dam to Debrigarh is awsome. The road is near to the dam, so view is awsome. Spotting of wild life is gurantted if you are visiting debrigarh. Now the sanctuary authorities have stopped private vehicle inside the park, instead they are offering SAFARI vehicle having 8 seats, cost-rs2000 per trip for around 3hours. During our Safari, we spotted deer, sambar, wild boar, bosin or gaur, lots of peacocks and koel birds. Pease take food items with you, as you will not find any eatables there.Cottages near to the park is very costly, around rs5000 per day for double sharing room. so plan your trip accordingly.‬

‪It is hot April when we choose to spend a family night in this beautiful Forest of Debrigarh (Barapahad, as known locally as it consists of 12("Bara" in local language) hills("Pahad" for hills)). Winter being the most favored time by tourist, we choose summer as chances of sighting wild animals is more for wild animals come out for quenching their thirst to nearby hirakud reservoir. A 30 Km drive encircling the reservoir itself is a "paisabasool" experience which feels like marine drive with hills, green countryside, forest patches on one side and the majestic Hirakud reservoir with waters till zenith on another.

Beautiful Eco Resorts developed by Forest Department (booked online via ecotourism website of odisha-all inclusive package with all 3 meals, snacks, boating, safari in own vehicle, wildlife film show etc.) situated in the most beautiful place inside the sanctuary just beside the reservoir; welcomed us with a beautiful homestyle cooked lunch. Service staff there are very cordial and provide sincere service through out the stay.

We have gone for afternoon safari in the evening after taking some rest around 4.45 pm in our own vehicle accompanied by Mr. Virat as our Guide from the Resort itself. He is a wonderful man in his late 50s and being a local resident know the forest very well. Debrigarh is famous for Wild Indian Gaur and Wild Boar. To our luck, we have sighted a group of 5-6 Gaurs grazing beside the reservoir. These are magnificent animals with white horns and white lower legs infamous for being the Bahana(carrier) of Yama(The Death God in Hindu mythology). Just a few meter away a New Mother Boar with its new born offspirngs(7-8) were sighted and we are delighted. Although we are at a distance of more than 500 m, our Guide Mr. Virat cautioned us to stay alert as mother boar may chase us in apprehension of danger. We continue our journey on the forest road with beautiful forest trails, big trees and hills all around. Lots of peacocks, painted spur fowls, Grey herons, Indian Paradise Flycather(the bird for which I have came here are in plenty in Debrigarh), Shikra and other predator raptors are sighted alongwith other common birds like Bulbuls, oriental white eye, Fantails, Ravens, Golden Oriole, tailorbird, Sunbirds etc. Monkeys are everywhere with their cute little kids, a soothing sight of trust when a mother monkey jumps from one tree to other with its young one clinging to its belly. We are heading towards Chaurasimal Forest Beat House which is 18 Km away from the camp and our guide said it is the area of Deers after crossing a small bridge which is at a distance of 4-5 km from the camp. Indeed, after heading few kilometers, we sighted a group of Spotted Deers crossing the roads. They are with small cute fawns guided by their parents. They are giving a cautious gaze at us. There are a couple of Sambar deers as well in the group. Seeing wild animals in the wild is entirely a different experience than to see them in zoo. Some distance away we have encountered another group of Spotted Deers and Sambar Deers. We continued our journey with the Sun Setting down creating the cast of different colours on the beautiful deciduous forest trees which are in the process of shedding their leaves and some in full bloom. A few distance ahead and we now encountered a group of Indian Gaurs on our left side inside the forests but from a very close distance. They do not mind our presence and continue grazing occasionally raising their heads giving a stranger's gaze at us. With Darkness increasing, we reached Chaurasimal Forest Beat House and get out of the vehicle for brisk walking. The view of Hirakud Reservoir in setting Sun is mesmerizing. The kids have enjoyed a lot sighting animals in the wild(two 3 yr. old boys with us) as much as the adults do. All are delighted to see good sightings of wild animals. In the beat, we got to know about the sighting of a Cheetah (Leopard) yesterday near a waterhole we have crossed on the way in evening time. So, we began our return journey with the bleak hope of seeing a Cheetah or a Beer although our Guide already said that its not the right time to sight one as they came out in the night. He is right of course and instead we have encountered another magnificent creature adorning the hills of Debrigarh; its a Python.
Encountered in wild for the first time perhaps all of us are stunned. It was crossing the road and seeing the vehicle light stayed back beside the roadside. We couldn't stop the vehicle at that point due to momentum and have to u-turn again to witness this wonderful snake again. It was right at the spot and gave us quite a time without moving. We enjoyed seeing it, and thanking the mother nautre we proceeded further. A Hare crossed the road after some distance in front of us further adding to the list of species encountered. Another hare ran in front of the vehicle on the road itself just as we are approaching near the camp. It was a wonderful safari experience.

Reaching the camp at near about 8 pm we are served with hot pakodas alongwith tea. After that, we are shown a film on Debrigarh Wildlife which we enjoyed a lot. The Dinner was delicious as of lunch with fresh fish curry right from the reservoir itself which is a delight for the non-vegetarians. I being vegetarian, enjoyed the paneer bharta, dal, bhindi bhaja alongwith rice and chapatis, pickles and salads etc. The rows of lights just above the Hirakud dam seen from a distance from the cottage balcony creates a wonderful sight. The cottages are aesthetically designed and are kept neat and clean with attached bathrooms. We all soon fall asleep in the lap of nature, without any car honking or train running sound.

Waking up to the sound of chirping birds the lure of seeing Sunrise over the vast Hirakud reservoir kept my enthusiasm at peak and I got up rightly at 4.30 am. I alongwith Mr. Virat and Mr. Suresh(my Driver) head for a morning safari especially to look the bird life in Debrigarh and to take some good photos of my favorite bird, the Indian Paradise Flycatcher, the long tailed beauty.Morning time is the best time to photograph birds due to the favorable lighting conditions and birds being most active in this time. We encountered a lot of peacocks and monkeys everywhere. A couple of painted spurfowl, a very beautiful hen like bird were spotted along the roadside. They go inside the bush as soon as they noticed us. Some distance away on a twig of a tree just in front of us a beautiful white morph Indian Paradise Flycather was sitting clearly visible from the vehicle front glass. But before I could focus my camera on it, it flew away. I witnessed the Sunrise over the Hirakud Reservoir, the golden hour. The dazzling golden water in the backdrop of blue hills and red-yellow-pink-blue sky creates a wonderful scene of Nature's painting with flock of birds crossing and fishermen's boat. Spending some time, we proceeded further with sighting of Indian Gaurs, Wild Boars, Spotted Deers, Sambar Deers again. We returned with 10 km yet to reach chaurasimal, as boating (complementary in the package) was scheduled at 7.30 am. Witnessed a lot of birds in the way as mentioned earlier but could photograph a very few (me being an amateur birder with a point a point and shoot camera in hand). Wildlife sighting in the afternoon safari was quite more frequent as compared to the morning one.

Boating was a very nice experience with endless waters of Mahanadi on one side and sight of the sanctuary and the hills on the other. Lots of waterbirds like ducks, cormorants, openbill storks, herons etc. are basking in the morning sun alongwith some boars at a distance. Fishing boats on the silvery waters with rising sun with Women propelling and men setting the nets justifies equal role of men and women in this fishing economy.

Returning to the camp we all had a hearty breakfast with hot Puri, aaloo sabji with upma and boiled eggs. Its time for departure now. We met the In Charge Mr. Sanjib kumar Panda and Mr. Prabhu Pr. Kar, both wonderful gentlemen, collected some books, birds photographs and cap labelled with Debrigarh santuary as souvenir and departed thanking all staff members like Mr. Dolamani, Mr. Mohan and team with our guide Mr. Virat waving at us.

Its really wonderful to witness such splendid wilderness so close to my hometown. I promised myself to again return here in winter with 2 night stay plan and with a good camera.‬

‪This place is at close distance to city of Sambalpur, Odisha. While visiting Hirakud Dam, you may also visit Debrigarh Sanctuary if you have extra 4 hours
time at your disposal. The road from Hirakud Dam Dyke to sanctuary is smmoth and picturesque. The attached photographs is a pictorial guide to sanctuary and this information will be useful for anyone who wishes to visit Debrigarh Sanctuary. ‬

‪Usually the problem with group trips is that there's not enough to satisfy everyone. But this place has everything to offer.

If you love wildlife photography, the forest is just perfect with open fields and small water holes for animals. Birds are plenty. Summer is good for spotting animals and winter for migratory birds.

If you don't care for wildlife, it is also a serene, beautiful place with plenty of views and a boat ride on the huge reservoir on offer. The ecotour stay facilities are reasonable.

Great place for a family trip.‬

‪Wow. All my apprehensions before he trip to very rarely known wildlife sanctuary of Odisha was swept away by stunning beauty and warm hospitality of Odisha Eco Tours. It is located on the hinterland of the massive and sublime Hirakud Reservoir created by dam on Mahanadi near Sambalpur. Don't expect to see much wild animals but get yourself soaked in the pollution free and stunningly beautiful expanse of blue water of the reservoir and lush green forests of Debrigarh. Drive through the dyke of Hirakud dam is mnd boggling and then you reach the entry gate at Dhodrokusum Post. After completing entry formalities get yourself cozy in warm and wonderful hospitality of Eco Tour Odisha managed Eco Tourism Complex. It has all modern amenities including AC (but no TV) and the fooding is taken care of by them. They provide excellent food(both in quality and quantity) which is included in package. Only thing disappointing is the high and ridiculous convenience fee charged for online booking which is 10% of the package. For jungle safari one has to book a Bolero or take own 4 wheeler. Officially they have no safari vehicles. But they assist with sourcing vehicle from Sambalpur.‬

‪Debrigarh sanctuary is in the district of Sambalpur bordering the right dyke of the mighty Hirakud dam built across river Mahanadi. The sanctuary is home to large number of animals including leopards, barking deer, spotted deer, bisons, peacocks and many more. Also home to a large varieties of migratory birds in winter. The ecotourism concept was developed 3years back with construction of 6 cute and comfortable cottages and 8 suites deep inside the sanctuary. Perhaps this is the only sanctuary with a water reservoir on one side and dense forest on the other. The ambience is serene and will enchant nature lovers. Few tourists visit the sanctuary since it’s not well advertised. The staff is friendly and polite. Food is descent. Booking is done online. A must visit for people who want to be away from the hustle-bustle of daily life‬

‪There are no tigers. Leopards inhabit this forest but hardly anyone other than the wildlife officials get a chance to see them. Bears are also rarely seen.
But you will get a chance to see Bisons, Sambhar and Barking deer. Wild Boars are also seen regularly. There are hundreds of peacocks and many can be seen near the roads. There are a lot of exquisite birds such as the Grey Hornbill, the Asian Paradise Flycatcher etc. There are a lot of really wild monkeys i.e. they climb tall trees as soon as they see a car.
The main attraction is the cottages deep inside the sanctuary, where an overnight stay is very thrilling. In winters, the water level of the reservoir is high and water is very close to the dining area, which gives you a really good feeling.
The other main attraction of this sanctuary is that you have to go inside in your own vehicle, and that too mostly without any guard. So you can stop in any place to watch the birds or animals.
Fooding in the cottages is just O.K., so it is better if you take some food items like Thepla, Bread butter jam etc. with you when you stay there.
The Forest dept. has maintained it very nicely and deserves to be praised for their excellent work.‬
