This compound is very massive. The number of buildings, houses, temples, gardens, and schools are impressive. The designs, decorations, carvings, statues, etc. Feng Shui style built. Various entries via three gates in the compound. It was founded by Wang Shi, the tofu maker of China.

Dans le village de Jiexiu, je ne pensais vraiment pas que la maison Wang était aussi immense. Elle symbolise la réussite des commerçants d'autrefois avec son architecture si particulière de la région et si préservée. C'est un chef d'œuvre qu'il ne faut pas manquer. Il y a encore quelques mobiliers, de magnifiques escaliers et la possibilité, le long des remparts, de découvrir l'immensité de la maison. Comptez 2 h de visite. Possibilité de se restaurer à l'extérieur. Je recommande !

雖然叫大院，其實是整座古城。王氏家族源遠流長，在山西举足輕重，財雄勢大，故大院可觀性很高。加上山西天氣乾燥，戰亂不多，大院保存得很好。此行看建築主菜本是平遙古城，大院是搭單，却有点驚喜。其可觀度不落後於平遙很多

The Wang Family built a huge compound over many generations with authentically preserved living, working, and dining areas. It takes at least two hours to stroll through the entire place--so photogenic. The government is redoing the village at the base of the compound and during our visit it was a mess. Perhaps they will be done with this upgrade in a year so expect a very touristy prelude to an otherwise authentically historic destination.

een wandeling is de Wang Residence is zeker een aanrader. mooie uitzicht over de streek maar ook het interne gedeelte van dit wooncomplex is volledig bewaard.

The Wang Compound is a huge compound, in 2 sections. It sort of gets repetitive, but we had a guide who navigated us through all the highlights and shared the history with us

We arrived at Wang Family Compound about an hour’s drive outside of Pingyao Ancient City, Shaanxi Province, after going to Qiao Family Compound (the opposite direction). The Wang Compound is very impressive in size, being the collective residences of all descendants and extended family of Governor Wang, who aced the Chinese Imperial exams and became a Very Important Person. The misnomer Compound ought to be called a town. It has a large main section of homes where the main family lived, joined to another walled section that contains many, many homes. Unfortunately, everything was confiscated by the government during the Cultural Revolution and all remaining residents left, housed elsewhere. So the result is a lot of empty buildings, the two large sections linked by a bridge at the top of the walls. There’s not much to see in the second section after you cross the bridge, mostly empty buildings. There were some temporary art exhibitions there, and a museum (follow the arrows) at the top of the hill. Because it was steep and we were getting tired, we opted to skip it. To return to the exit (different from the entry), one has to cross the bridge again. I enjoyed the Qiao Family Compound more, of the famous Raise thr Red Lantern fame. It was smaller, and they made sure there was something interesting at each of the residences.

Magnifica doppia residenza realizzata nei secoli dalla famiglia Wang.
La parte più antica e' circondata da mura, la seconda, collegata da un piccolo ponticello, fu realizzata successivamente (ma sarà la prima che visiterete entrando dall'ingresso).
Suggerisco di farsi accompagnare da una guida che vi farà apprezzare particolari poco visibili (specie ad occhi poco esperti) e vi racconterà storia ed aneddoti di questo stupendo sito storico/culturale.
La parte più antica e' circondata da mura, la seconda, collegata da un piccolo ponticello, fu realizzata successivamente (ma sarà la prima che visiterete entrando dall'ingresso).

i am a huge fan of beautiful architectures. and here you will get to see ancient chinese architecture at its best preserved condition.
it is a rich family's residence. very very huge. the newer portion has better architecture with lots of beautiful carvings, statues and great for pictures. totally loved it
best to go with a guide if possible. its like an hour drive from pingyao.

平遥古城から列車と路線バスを乗り継いで行きましたが、平遥古城からの直通バスもあるようでした。入場料は35元(閑散期料金)と中国の観光地としてはお手頃価格。
当初は映画「紅夢」のロケ地・乔家大院を訪れる予定でしたが、こちらの方が大きくて観光客も少ないということで計画変更。
大きいとは聞いていましたが、想像以上の大きさと清代の山西商人の財力にびっくり！敷地内には同じような四合院が無数にありますが、よく見ると同じものはひとつとしてなく、見学には2〜3時間は必要。西太后が北京から逃げる時に宿泊したという部屋もあり、とにかく見応え十分！
