Awesome experience of elephants and deer. But didn't see any tiger only fresh pugmarks...But 3 hours of jeepride deep inside the jungle was just worth going. It would be nice if the timings are changed from 3 pm to 2pm. 6 pm becomes bit lye and dark for returning.

During the jeep Safari today we saw deer and 2 peacocks.
Staff is not really motivated, they give no information. The sight from the jeep is bad, we drove a small circuit, approximately 1:30.
You can see more wild animals while driving along the main road than during this safari. It is a waste of money.

Wayanad is only 5 hrs drive from bangalore through the beautiful bandipur forest and if you are lucky enough you can spot deer as well as elephant. A small mystic town in kerela it boasts of lush greenery and wide range of flora and fauna. It is the perfect place to trek. You can take a leisurely stroll amidst magnificent natural beauty. The visual delights include edakkal caves, dam, spice garden, ram mandir. You will be delighted to see hilly waterfalls . You get wide variety of spices . There are so many hotels and luxury resort to make your sojourn memorable The Sultan bathery located in the heart of the city has good hotels. LE villagio is a private villa here with excellent ambience. Another good resort is Vythri resort . You must visit Mathunga wild life sanctuary. 2N/3D will be perfect to explore Wayanad

Ticket counter is extremely bad, they said it’s queue to purchase the ticket. When I reached window they didn’t gave me ticket instead they had list of name whom they gave the ticket. We stand in queue for more that 2 hours and we didn’t know that we need to write down the name as we don’t speak their language. The ticket counter person was very rude. If you want tickets for morning slot then you need to visit ticket counter at 4.30 am in the morning and write down your name and you can wait till 7 am or you can come back and go at 7 am.

Although tiring it's worth a visit, we were lucky enough to see so many animals at a time, kids loved the surroundings

I would give NEGATIVE stars for this.
A big NO-NO. Multiple reasons :
1. There is no online booking.
2. You need to go and wait an hour in queue before the window opens for the booking
3. The driver is not interested nor excited to showcase the sanctuary / forest as he knows it's empty or he is just a driver and not a naturalist.
4. There are 2 domesticated elephants at the entry point.
5. You enter and within 500 mtrs, they again show you 5 elephants which thet claim are wild, but if you are a natural life enthusiast, you will know the elephants are stationed there.
6. Apart from that I saw 2, and I mean 2 spotted dear, 2 peacocks and thats it.
7. It is a 1 hour jeep ride, slow as a turtle, boring as a stone. I honestly would have paid 750 bucks to go off-roading in that jeep instead.
8. We saw herd of elephants and multiples of spotted dear on the main highway, which speaks volumes that this part of the forest is empty.
A complete waste of time, money and fuel !

Very bad road. We didn't know that road is this bad. Otherwise we wouldn't have gone by keeping so much money that too. They are charging 720rs per jeep safari and adult 150rs per ticket. And nobody told us that road is bad when we are purchasing ticket. Really please don't visit. We expected like Jim Corbett which is very good and we went actually but it is totally opposite experience. And animals also we didn't get to see much just peacock, deer and monkeys which we can see very easily anywhere else.

Starting to late, we did see Nothing unless beards and dear.
The jeep has one way go and back which last 1h30 min.
If you have been in african parcs, here you willl be desepointed. The drive….the drives. He never cuts its a engin….
This is a place to visit at 5 o clock in the Morning, but the y open at 7 30....

The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Wayanad Kerala and is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
We visited the Sulthan Bathery Range of the sanctuary on our first evening in Wayanad. The Sanctuary has four ranges namely Sulthan Bathery, Muthanga, Kurichiat and Tholpetty.
As we were late for a safari and it was almost late evening so we decided to take a drive through the main National highway to the sanctuary with the hope of seeing some wildlife. We were lucky to see some deer and plenty of birds.
The Sanctuary is the second largest one in Kerala and has lush green forests and rich wildlife. Incidentally the sanctuary comes under Protect Elephant and one can spot herd of elephants roaming in the area, we were lucky to see a herd in the far distance, but couldn't make out the numbers because of the failing light.
I will positively make a trip again to this sanctuary.

Ok so wayanad wildlife sanctuary is a culminative term for the forest zome covering the district .
There are two safaris in this sanctuary one at tholpetty (Karnataka/coorg border) and the other one at muthanga.
We had chosen the tholpetty one in and to be honest I feel nagarhole/ kabini/ bandipur is much better then what we went
Let me tell you why!!
To begin with they have safaris one at 6 and the other one at 3 .it's just a one hour safari plus the charges are rupess 150/ person and the vehicle charge is 720.
We wer a family of four so our expenditure on the experience was approx around 1,500
As we are from the northern part of India . We aren't much comfortable with kannada or malyalam .
Hence the so called rude safari driver didn't Evan talk to us. Didn't explain anything didn't bother to care to be honest!
Secondly all the safari Jeep's (20in the noon) all go in the same direction hence alerting the wildlife .therefore it's difficult to spot one on the same trail.
I would highly suggest the forest department to assign trails and breakdown the safari routes.
We didn't spot anything apart from deers, langoor that's it nothing else .🙄
And you won't believe me I spotted elephants and bison on the main road itself post the safari .
Felt like a clear waste of 1,500 bucks.

Santosh, Wynad is known we stayed in Sultan Battery , KSTDC.
Pune, is a lovely place but I have done birding only along PS Expressway. No idea on accomdation. Please search on Tripadvisor and read the reviews.

hi..i am travelling to waynad with a group of friends (5 girls) and wanted to explore wayanad sanctuary. We are travelling in the coming weekend and will be staying in vythiri. would we have to book for this safari in advance or we can get hold of the jeep then and there? also, is walking better than a jeep safari? and how much would be the charges? also, is 1 day ideal for the safari?

There are specifi timings for Forest entry. I suggest you can check the timings on your way to Vythiri (before you checkin). Passes are issued twice a day 6am and 2 pm. But please do check the timing. When you buy your entry pass, you will get to book your Jeep and Forest guide. You dont have much of a choice there. They operate a queue and whoever is alloted you simply have to go with them.
Waynad is not a great place for wildlife / safari. The jeep travels on a 8-9 Km road thru the forest, and you simply have to watch whatever pops up on your route. If you are a wildlife lover, then other forests along the Nilgiri ranges are much better, and well organized.

It is open all round the year.
You need to be there early if you are such a large group.. Booking close very soon because the seats are very limited.

Yes it is open all year round. But Aug will be rainy season. Please plan accordingly.

I booked two safaris, one in Tholpetty and another in Nagarhole in Kuta, but didn't see anything other than deer. Was really really disappointed...and then i went to Thirunelli temple in the late evening, and while coming back, we spotted a fully grown tiger. I still get jitters while writing it, it was so unexpected! And then someone told me that the area near Thirunelli has actually highest chances of wild animal spotting at night.
As far as the other places in Wayanad are concerned, stay either in Kalpetta or Vythiri for the typical sightseeing part. Don't miss Banasura sagar.

I was told that we need to have special permission from the Forest Dept. for the stay in Resort. ( I've not personally tried it). however, you can attempt to reach the Forest Rangers - Contact numbers are available below.

In night there is no permission to enter in the forest.
Morning is the best time to visit the sanctuary. It is the most probable time to see animals.
Entry time Daily - 7 to 10 am & 3 to 4.30 pm
(I dnt know this timing changed or not). Please check through online.
