On the walk from the car park, we became aware of a recorded voice speaking through a discrete tannoy. Someone is reading out the names and ages of the soldiers buried in the cemetery. Very small visitors' centre (unstaffed). The sheer scale of the cemetery is overwhelming - so many graves, so many without names....

This is the major cemetery in the Ypres area. Visit on a cold freezing miserable day to get some tiny insight what is was like to fight and die in the trenches.
Its immaculately presented and mind numbing to see all those graves and names carved into the walls.
Even after 100 years its a emotional place to stand and contemplate what happended there.

This cemetery really brings a lump to your throat. Its quiet and peaceful but the shear amount of headstone and names of the memorials really hits home.

Hier wordt je stil van. 12.000 graven van jonge Britse militairen uit de grote oorlog. Tevens liggen hier 4 Duitsers. Op de muren nog 34.000 namen van vermisten, dit als aanvulling op de vele namen op de Menenpoort in Ieper. Grootste Britse militaire begraafplaats op vaste land van Europa. Indrukwekkend en een goed besef van de waanzin van deze oorlog. Het grote monument in het midden is gebouwd om de oorspronkelijke Duitse bunker / Brits dressing station: Tyne Cottage.

Went in a large group. It was a good experience for us. A large area so you can walk around and explore all the different areas. It is quite a moving experience but definitely recommend.

Immenso cimitero di guerra dove riposano migliaia di caduti ( solo il muro semicircolare conta 34857 dispersi) .Forse il piu' visitato tra i vari presenti nella zona
( saliente di Ypres ).Tra le tombe ci sono anche 2 bunker .Lo trovate 7 km a nord est della citta'. Aperto 24 ore, il centro visitatori e' aperto dalle 10.00 alle 18.00

Walking around this cemetery and the visitor centre it brought it home the futility of war. All those lives lost, on both sides, for what in reality was a narrow strip of land. Full marks to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for the upkeep of all these cemeteries.

What's with so many cemeteries, you ask? That of course is the point - WWI took so many lives we will be forever reminded. This particular location I consider special; as when I look off to the WSW, I can see the spires of Ypres/Iper; thus, FINALLY getting a look at Flanders Fields.
This is a Commonwealth cemetery, not just Canadian, reminding us that young men from many nations died here. I spent about an hour reading gravestones. Very moving.

To see so many of the white headstones with no names for the fallen, unknown soldiers. Really hits home how terrible the fighting of the war must have been in this area. It is an emotional striking experience to just walk the stones of the fallen soldiers resting beneath mainly only known to god. Then the walls spelling out the names of so many who were never found and were lost in the battles close by adds to the poignancy.
I must to experience, just to get a sense of the futility and loss of war.

Bij een bezoek aan dit oorlogskerkhof wordt je vanzelf stil.Wij hadden het geluk dat tijdens ons bezoek een Britse groep met gids aanwezig waren,zo zijn we veel te weten gekomen over het ontstaan van dit kerkhof.Dit bezoek zet de waanzin van oorlog nog eens zeer duidelijk in de verf.

We are visiting Tyne Cot next weekend on a Battlefields Tour. My husband has an uncle named on the wall.
Can we purchase a poppy cross or wreath in the Visitor Centre to leave in his remembrance.

I don't recall them being on sale there but in if you visit the Cloth Hall in Ypres or the excellent museum at nearby Zonnebeke, there are shops that do sell the crosses.

How long would you suggest we give ourselves to visit? There are one or two other things we want to do on the same day whilst we are in the area.

You should spend at least 1. 5 hours here, as it is one of the largest CWG Cemeteries. The good news is that unlike the smaller cemeteries there are toilets available ( .50 euros @ Mar 15). It is also well worth also attending the Menin Gate service at 8pm (CET) when they remember an event that happened on that date.
If you are tracing a relative that is remembered out there then a visit to the cwgc website is worth a visit before hand . If you have the person's name and ideally regiment( not essential) you can find which cemetery and also location, including cemetery map they are remembered at.
TomTom also has a POI of all the CWGG locations.

Go to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site and the entry for him will have details of the Cemetery, Grave or Memorial his is in or commemorated on. Each Cemetery has a small locker with a visitors book and another book to names, graves or memorial in it.
