‪Spanish Adventure in San Carlos, Antioguia has to be the best immersion Spanish school in Colombia! Not only do you have the opportunity to learn and improve your Spanish but you also get to explore the beautiful surroundings of San Carlos.

My husband and I both signed up for the 3 week course as beginners with very little basic Spanish. After our very brief initial assessment we were placed in a class suitable to our levels. The teachers there are really laid back and give great guidance and support so as not to put you under too much pressure. Having said that, it’s not a ‘walk in the park’ and the 2hr classes can be quite difficult. As well as having structured classes there are also creativity classes such as puppet making, creating a tv programme, a night at the Oscars, short sketches - all conducted in Spanish. These were fun group activities but we did find it very hard to follow as beginners. Luckily, we had some amazing people studying with us who were more advanced and could help explain things to us. Salsa classes once a week were great fun too and Liz our teacher was really good at explaining the moves.

The days are very busy at Spanish Adventure but there is a nice balance between studying and exploring the surroundings. Most of the outdoor pursuits are trekking based but this could be anything from an easy trek to a local river for a swim or a more strenuous trek to some of the impressive waterfalls in the region such as La Chorrera. Our favourite hike was to the top of El Tabor which had magnificent views of San Carlos (top tip: if doing this yourself, bring a picnic). We also had a fantastic day river tubing which was highly recommended and did not disappoint.

San Carlos itself is a small colonial town with a very interesting history. It has a really nice pueblo, where everyone gathers in the evening and weekends. It has a fantastic community feel and without exception, the locals were always friendly, helpful and welcoming. It’s worth going for the ice cream alone.

Our experiences at Spanish Adventure would not have been so good if it wasn’t for the people we met there. The teachers are truly amazing with the patience of saints. They are always friendly, chatty, inclusive, professional and positive and for this we are most grateful. Our fellow students were a mix from many different countries and some of the best people we’ve encountered on our travels. We have since met up with a few and I’m sure our paths will cross again in the future.

Would we recommend Spanish Adventure San Carlos? Absolutely.‬

‪I found Spanish Adventure after searching for a Spanish Immersion School to spend my summer at in Latin America. When I first saw the school and read the reviews, I thought to myself, “this is too good to be true.” But based on so many positive reviews and the ability to learn Spanish whilst in the middle of beautiful nature, I nervously booked 5.5 weeks in Colombia with Spanish Adventures. Based on my limited and biased American perspective about Colombia, I really over prepared for this trip. I got a cheap phone, cheap clothes, and made sure to prepare for the worst. However, once I arrived at Spanish Adventures and San Carlos, I realized that almost all of my fears were unfounded. Spanish Adventures and San Carlos are SO SAFE. I felt more safe here than I do back home in Oklahoma. San Carlos is now one of my favorite cities. As an example: one day I was riding a Mototaxi to an adventure with the school and accidentally left my bag in the Mototaxi. When I realized my mistake, I tried to run after the Mototaxi but wasn’t fast enough. A local saw me running and asked me what had happened. I responded “mi bolsa está en este Mototaxi” and without hesitation he left on his motorcycle and returned with my bag. This is how great the people of this town are. EVERYONE is so kind, helpful, and friendly in San Carlos. This makes it the perfect town to learn Spanish in because everyone is truly willing to speak Spanish to you.
As for the school—in one word I would say excellent. In my 5.5 weeks, I had every teacher (Rafa, Joan, and Camilo) and they were all excellent. I entered the school with basic Spanish knowledge and am leaving being able to have full conversations in Spanish. I still have a long way to go in my Spanish journey, but I’m so much further along than I could have ever imagined before coming to Spanish Adventures. I think my favorite part of the school was the adventures. These activities provide a time to both be in nature and practice your Spanish. In my time here, I had so many incredible experiences with the adventures. Sure, there are other schools where you can technically take more hours of class per day, but once you include the time talking in Spanish during the adventures, you’ll see that Spanish Adventures is superior in every way. I honestly think that this is the best combination of fun and learning that you’ll find anywhere in the world. I absolutely loved my time here and can’t wait to come back.
A few tips for future visitors of Spanish adventures:
1. Bring less things than you think you’ll need. While San Carlos is a small town, it still has all the essentials that you could ever need—soap, shampoo, food, clothing, and so much more. I would recommend bringing less stuff and buying what you need when you arrive since everything is soooooo cheap here.
2. Bring Deet mosquito repellent. I used the Sawyer brand 30% deet lotion and had great success at avoiding mosquito bites when I used it correctly. It’s hard to find deet in Colombia so I would recommend bringing this from your home country.
3. Plan adventures outside of the school that you want to do! The school provided so many amazing adventures, but they simply can’t provide everything in the limited time that you are at the school. While I was at the school, I went hammocking over a valley, tubing, hiked La piedra del Tabor, and repelled 1,000ft down a waterfall. Don’t be afraid to book extra activities in your free time to do even more incredible things during your stay here. The 1,000ft repelling down a waterfall is now one of mummy highlights of my life. I recommend using EcoGuias for all of your extra adventure needs.

4. Put yourself out there! You’ll only be at Spanish adventures for a limited time—make the most of it. Become friends with other students, speak Spanish a lot. Try new things, push yourself. For me, Spanish Adventures was a time of personal growth because I put myself out there and tried new things. Don’t let your experience go to waste!
5. If you like privacy, book a private room. I booked a private room and loved the privacy it allowed me. My friends who stayed in the shared rooms also had a great experience, but if you know you enjoy more privacy, don’t be afraid to stay in a private room. The school is VERY social, so even with the private room you’ll still have ample time to make friends.
6. Don’t forget to have fun! Learning a language is a FUN adventure. During your time at Spanish Adventures, lean into the fun. If you find yourself getting stressed, back up and breathe, meditate, do yoga, max recenter. This school is a stress free zone and encourages learning in a stress free way. I know you learn better when you’re not stressed and this school provides the perfect stress free environment—let te environment take you on a journey.
7. Use Jerry for all of your Motocarro needs (his number is out front of the house.

In summary, I booked this school wondering if it could live up to its reviews. After the first day, it absolutely blew all of the reviews out of the water. I said many times during my stay that, “today’s another day in paradise” and I truly believe that. Spanish Adventures is paradise for those who are willing to explore. I 100% recommend coming here and I hope to return myself in the future. Nos Vemos!‬

‪The employees at Spanish Adventure made this experience so amazing! They did a great job at assessing our Spanish level and helping us with the things we need to improve or learn.
The adventures were awesome! The city is untouched by tourists and we got to visit so many waterfalls, rivers, and see cool things throughout the city!
I definitely recommend to anyone wanting to improve their Spanish!‬

‪I stayed here for almost two months, and the community at the school felt like family by the end. All who work at the school have the most welcoming and kind personalities. As a volunteer, I worked on the school's social media and blog. I also cleaned the house a few times a week. The work was not very hard and often fun. I loved getting to go out on adventures four times a week to the beautiful rivers and waterfalls in San Carlos, hanging out with friends in town, and getting to know the local culture. San Carlos is welcoming and laid-back. My Spanish improved dramatically while I was here.
Before volunteering here I had never traveled alone before. Now I feel confident and motivated to travel more in Latin America. I also hope I can return here. This place is magical.‬

Sehr sehr schade!‬

‪I just spent 6 weeks at Spanish Adventures. Originally I only planned to stay four weeks, but I quickly changed my mind. That by itself tells everything. I think my experience was pretty unusual. Due to the pandemic and the recent protests, there were much less students than usual which I initially thought was a pity. But I just ended up making a lot of local friends and got immersed even more into the culture. So, in the end it all turned out perfectly. The Spanish classes were great, I improved my Spanish so much. Especially my confidence in talking is much better now. To anyone who wants to learn Spanish in a village where people absolutely cannot speak English which pushes you to try your spanish, in the middle of nature, with amazing teachers and everybody else involved in the school.. go for it! I miss it already.‬

‪I have spent the past four weeks at Spanish Adventure working as a social media/ marketing volunteer. Not only have I gained much more confidence in my Spanish abilities, but I have also found a family and a home here in San Carlos. Every day at the school we are able to take interesting classes, practice speaking with locals, visit the nearby town, and go on excursions. If you are looking to experience the true Colombian culture and to really work on your Spanish, do not hesitate to come here. To everyone at the school, thank you for everything and I hope to see you again soon!‬

‪This place is special. I spent 5 weeks at Spanish Adventure as a student and volunteer... I learned so much and made many new lifelong friends from different parts of the world during my time here. All the people that work here are young, local Colombians that are very good at teaching about the paisa culture and relate to you on so many levels. They've all become good homies that I will definitely reach out to whenever I am back in the Antioquia region of Colombia. The daily structure with class and application to hikes to beautiful waterfalls and rivers keeps you engaged and excited for the next day. If you love nature and want to learn Spanish in a community setting, there is no place better!‬

‪I was here for 6 weeks and had a great time, I arrived in April and knew absolutely no Spanish, The classes were a great learning experience to practice conversation and learn the grammar of Spanish, I improved so much over the time I spent here. The adventures are a thrill, if you like nature, canyoning, and see a vibrant little authentic Colombian town and eat delicious empanadas, Spanish adventure is for you!‬
